Thai Army Accuses Cambodia of Shelling Civilian Zones, Pledges Defensive Retaliation

Artillery strikes damage rural hospital as cross-border tensions escalate

The Royal Thai Army has issued a stern warning after alleging that Cambodian forces have fired long-range weapons into Thai territory, striking areas beyond designated military zones. In a public announcement made on Sunday, 27 July, the Thai military said it remains fully prepared to respond decisively to protect national sovereignty and civilian safety.

Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree addressed the media regarding recent developments along the Thai-Cambodian border, highlighting that multiple Cambodian artillery shells landed in Surin province, including at locations with no military presence. The attacks mark a significant escalation in an already volatile conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

One of the most serious incidents occurred on Saturday afternoon, when shells struck the Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital in Ban Sam Meng, Si Sa Ket province. While the facility sustained heavy structural damage, no casualties were reported, as medical personnel had successfully evacuated patients earlier in the day.

Thai Military Responds to Heightened Threats

Major General Winthai emphasised that the Thai Army will focus its military response on neutralising credible threats, adhering to international rules of engagement. “We are not seeking conflict,” he said, “but we must act to protect Thai citizens and prevent further loss of life or property.”

The army confirmed that it would avoid targeting civilian zones, instead conducting operations strictly against military threats. However, it warned that continued shelling from Cambodian territory, especially involving long-range rockets and artillery systems, would not be tolerated.

According to intelligence sources, Cambodian forces may now be deploying more sophisticated weapons systems, including the PHL-03 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), RM-70, and BM-21 Grad launchers. These high-performance systems have the capacity to reach deeper into Thai territory, further increasing the risk to civilians and strategic infrastructure.

Cambodia’s Intentions Called Into Question

While Thailand has not initiated any offensive operations beyond its border, military officials expressed concern over what they called “aggressive intent” from the Cambodian side. The Thai Army noted that despite previous calls for de-escalation and diplomacy, the attacks have continued with increasing intensity and precision.

“The Royal Thai Army will act with full responsibility and within international law,” said Major General Winthai. “Our mission is to safeguard our sovereignty and defend the lives and property of the Thai people, and we will carry this out with utmost discipline and resolve.”

The announcement comes amid growing regional concern over the deteriorating situation along the Thai-Cambodian border. Analysts warn that without swift diplomatic intervention, the ongoing skirmishes could spiral into a full-blown conflict, with grave humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.

Calls for Calm as Tensions Rise Along the Border

In response to the shelling, Thai officials have reiterated their commitment to diplomatic channels through ASEAN and the United Nations but acknowledged that defence actions are now necessary in light of sustained aggression.

Local authorities in border provinces such as Surin and Si Sa Ket have activated emergency protocols, with some residents being temporarily relocated as a precaution. So far, over 200,000 people from both nations have been displaced due to the intensifying conflict.

The Royal Thai Army continues to monitor the situation closely, with air and ground surveillance assets deployed along the front lines. Despite the mounting pressure, military officials have assured the public that Thailand remains committed to peace, even as it reinforces its right to defend its borders.
