Police in Thailand are preparing to send a 33-year-old man accused of killing his girlfriend for psychiatric evaluation after he allegedly confessed to suffocating her with a pillow inside a condominium unit in Nonthaburi province.
The case has attracted widespread attention in Thailand due to the suspect’s repeated claims that he believed the victim had been drugging and poisoning him before the fatal incident.
According to Thai police, the suspect — identified as Nitirarn “Dream” Laosuksantiwong — was coherent and responsive throughout questioning despite claims from his family that he suffers from long-term mental health issues.
Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the killing was intentional and whether the suspect’s mental condition could affect legal proceedings.
Suspect Claimed Girlfriend Was Trying To Poison Him
According to investigators, the suspect initially told police that unknown individuals were trying to harm him before later claiming that his girlfriend had allegedly been drugging him.
Police said the suspect claimed the victim applied substances to his body and secretly gave him unknown drugs that allegedly caused pain, weakness and burning sensations.
He reportedly told investigators that arguments escalated after he believed his girlfriend attempted to drug him again on the day of the incident.
However, authorities stated that investigations so far have uncovered no evidence of narcotics, poison, or substances matching the suspect’s allegations.
Police also noted that no immediate medical records confirming his psychiatric treatment had yet been located, although family members claimed he had received treatment for several years at multiple hospitals, including Sri Thanya Hospital and other psychiatric institutions in Thailand.
Despite the allegations surrounding his mental health, police stated that the suspect remained fully conscious during questioning and was able to answer all questions clearly and coherently.
Officials added that psychiatric specialists will now conduct further assessments to determine his mental condition and criminal responsibility.
Suspect Fled Across Thailand After Killing
Following the alleged murder, the suspect reportedly fled the condominium and drove aimlessly across several provinces.
Police said he travelled first to Suphan Buri province, where he spent the night at a petrol station before continuing north by public transport towards Lampang and later Chiang Mai province.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect had no relatives in Chiang Mai and appeared to be wandering without a clear destination.
He was later brought back to Bang Bua Thong Police Station for further investigations and a crime scene reenactment. Media outlets were reportedly not allowed inside the condominium during the reconstruction process.
During questioning outside the police station, the suspect apologised for the incident and expressed remorse, though he continued insisting that he had been poisoned repeatedly by the victim.
