A family in Thailand had a lucky escape after their pet dog unknowingly carried a live hand grenade back to their home, mistaking the explosive device for a toy.
The incident took place in Sisaket province, where authorities were alerted after a resident discovered a suspicious object inside his home.
Fortunately, no one was injured and the grenade was safely destroyed before it could cause any harm.
Homeowner Shocked To Discover Grenade On Veranda
According to local authorities, homeowner Rungnapa Duangta had just returned home from the hospital and was resting on his veranda when he noticed a rusty spherical object nearby.
Curious about what it was, he picked it up for a closer look and quickly realised it resembled a hand grenade after spotting what appeared to be a safety pin.
Alarmed by the discovery, he immediately placed the object outside the house and began questioning family members about where it had come from.
That’s when he learned that the family’s pet dog had brought the item home earlier in the day after digging it up somewhere nearby.
Family Thought It Was Just Scrap Material
Relatives inside the house reportedly assumed the object was nothing more than an old bone or a piece of discarded plastic.
As a result, nobody paid much attention to it until the homeowner took a closer look.
Police officers later examined the object and confirmed it was a Chinese-made TYPE 82-2 fragmentation hand grenade.
Despite its rusty appearance and age, authorities determined that the grenade was still active and capable of exploding.
Officials noted that such explosives are occasionally discovered in areas near Thailand’s border regions.
Authorities Detonate Grenade In Empty Field
Specialist officers followed safety procedures by transporting the grenade to an isolated rice field located far away from residential areas.
The device was then safely detonated and destroyed.
The explosion reportedly left a crater about 30cm deep and 60cm wide, demonstrating the potential danger posed by the grenade had it exploded inside the family’s home.
Thankfully, no injuries or property damage were reported.
Public Urged Not To Touch Suspicious Objects
Following the incident, local authorities reminded residents to exercise caution when encountering unfamiliar or suspicious items.
Officials advised the public not to touch, move or inspect any object that could potentially be an explosive device.
Instead, residents should immediately contact the police, local authorities or community leaders so trained personnel can assess the situation safely.
The unusual incident serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless objects can pose serious risks — especially when an enthusiastic dog decides to bring home an unexpected “toy”.
