A two-day riot broke out in a Thai prison, with hundreds of prisoners setting the jail on fire in protest against the handling of a Covid-19 cluster.
Some of the inmates were injured as the prison officers tried to restore order at the prison.
The infamously crowded Thai prisons saw more than 87,000 infections and 185 deaths, resulting in about 400 prisoners going on a rampage on 18 December- they wanted those infected with the coronavirus to be removed.
The prisoners set their sleeping quarters on fire in the evening, after another fire the day before – 31 were subsequently arrested and taken to a high security prison.
No deaths were reported from the riots and fires.
According to AFP, a government official in Krabi said that the situation has since been brought under control and prison authorities are inspecting the area for damages.
