A woman in Thailand has sparked widespread discussion online after alleging that her husband of 23 years left her following an affair with a Buddhist monk.

The incident, which reportedly took place in Prachin Buri province in central Thailand, quickly gained traction across Thai social media platforms after details of the woman’s story were shared publicly on Facebook.

According to local reports, the woman claimed her husband had developed a relationship with a monk and later asked her to accept a three-person arrangement. Shocked by the request and unable to accept the situation, she allegedly decided to leave the family home with just 6,000 baht, equivalent to around S$235.

The story has since gone viral, with many online users criticising both the husband and the monk involved in the allegations. In Thailand, Buddhist monks are expected to follow strict monastic rules, including celibacy, and allegations involving romantic or sexual relationships often attract strong public attention.

Thai Media Visited Temple Linked To Allegations

Following the growing public interest, Thai reporters reportedly travelled to a temple in Nakhon Ratchasima province on May 4 to verify the claims surrounding the monk.

A monk interviewed at the temple allegedly described the accused monk as someone who kept to himself and rarely interacted with other temple residents. The monk also reportedly said the individual had not been seen at the temple recently.

Temple representatives further clarified that the monk accused in the affair allegations was not officially attached to the temple in question.

Officials later stated that the monk is currently registered under a temple located in Det Udom district in Udon Ratchathani province. However, they added that they were unable to confirm the allegations and were unaware of any misconduct involving the monk.

The controversy has reignited discussions in Thailand about religious discipline, public trust in temples, and the pressures faced by long-term marriages dealing with betrayal and emotional distress.

Temple Distances Itself From Controversy

Separately, Wat Bueng Phra Aram Luang released a statement clarifying that the monk had only temporarily stayed there while studying Buddhist scriptures in July 2025.

According to the statement, the monk later left the temple in October 2025 and was no longer associated with the institution.

Temple representatives stressed that any alleged personal conduct should not be linked to the temple itself. They also urged the public to wait for proper verification by relevant authorities before drawing conclusions.

The allegations continue to generate strong reactions online, with many Thai netizens debating issues involving marriage, religion, and personal responsibility. No official charges have been announced in relation to the claims so far.
