6-Year-Old Boy Dies After Grandfather’s Pet Monkey Bites Through His Lung
A six-year-old boy in southern Thailand has died after being attacked by a pet monkey belonging to his grandfather in a tragic incident that has shocked the local community.
The fatal attack took place on Saturday, 6 June, in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The victim, identified as Nathan Ekkarat Srichan, suffered severe injuries after the monkey reportedly turned aggressive and mauled him while he was near the animal.
According to local reports, the monkey bit the boy in the chest and leg during the attack. The most serious injury occurred when the animal’s fangs penetrated the child’s lung, leaving him critically wounded. Family members rushed Nathan to hospital for emergency treatment, but doctors were unable to save his life. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Monkey Had Been Raised By Grandfather Since Infancy
Police investigations revealed that the monkey belonged to Nathan’s grandfather, who had reportedly raised the animal since it was young.
The macaque was tethered beside the family home using a long rope stretched between two trees, allowing it to climb and move around the property. Authorities believe the young boy may have unknowingly wandered too close to the animal before the attack occurred.
Investigators said there was no immediate indication that the monkey had been used for agricultural work, with reports suggesting it was kept primarily as a companion animal. The exact reason for the sudden attack remains unclear.
Community Left In Shock
Police officers and rescue personnel attended the scene following reports of the incident and have since begun gathering evidence and witness statements.
The young victim was reportedly a primary school student, and news of his death has left family members, classmates and residents devastated. Authorities have not announced any charges at this stage as investigations continue.
The tragedy has also reignited concerns over the risks associated with keeping wild animals as household pets. While monkeys are commonly seen in parts of Thailand, experts have previously warned that even animals raised by humans can display unpredictable and dangerous behaviour. Previous incidents involving macaque attacks on residents and tourists have been reported across the country.
As the investigation continues, many in the community are mourning the loss of a young life taken in a sudden and heartbreaking incident.
