According to Thai media reports, at least eight people were killed while another 35 suffered injuries following the devastating collision on May 16. Several victims were believed to have been trapped inside the burning vehicle after the impact triggered explosions and an intense fire.

The accident reportedly took place near the Airport Rail Link station along Asok-Din Daeng Road in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district during the afternoon rush hour.

Videos circulating online showed an orange air-conditioned public bus stranded across the railway crossing while traffic remained gridlocked around it. Moments later, a freight train travelling along the track smashed into the side of the bus at high speed.

Witnesses described hearing a massive explosion immediately upon impact.

The force of the collision reportedly dragged the bus several metres down the track before the train finally came to a halt. Nearby motorcycles and vehicles were also hit during the incident, with some catching fire shortly afterwards.

Firefighters Rushed To Scene As Explosions Continued

Emergency responders and firefighters were dispatched to the area after authorities received reports of a major blaze involving a passenger bus at around 3:42pm local time.

According to local reports, rescue teams heard repeated popping sounds believed to be linked to fuel explosions while attempting to contain the fire.

The blaze was eventually brought under control in under 20 minutes, but the destruction at the scene was severe.

Authorities later discovered eight bodies inside the charred remains of the bus. Many injured victims, including motorists caught nearby during the crash, were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. At least two people were reportedly left in critical condition.

The shocking incident quickly spread across social media platforms, with videos of the fiery aftermath drawing widespread attention online. Many users questioned how the bus had ended up stranded directly on the tracks despite railway safety systems being in place.

Train Driver And Railway Barrier Under Investigation

Thailand’s Deputy Transport Minister reportedly stated that the bus had become stuck at a traffic light while partially blocking the railway crossing.

Because vehicles remained on the tracks, the railway barrier allegedly could not lower properly before the train approached.

Several eyewitnesses also claimed the crossing barrier appeared to malfunction moments before the collision occurred.

Investigators are now reviewing radio communication recordings between railway personnel and the freight train driver after allegations surfaced that warnings about vehicles remaining on the tracks may not have been acknowledged in time.

Officials also noted that the freight train was carrying heavy shipping containers, significantly increasing braking distance and reducing the train’s ability to stop before impact.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether human error, signalling failures, or railway system malfunctions contributed to one of Bangkok’s deadliest recent transport accidents.

The tragedy has once again sparked discussions surrounding railway crossing safety, public transport infrastructure, and urban traffic management in major Southeast Asian cities.
