Tan Kok Meng, 46, was ordered to be confined in a psychiatric institution, prison or some other place of safe custody; after he was found to be of unsound mind during his trial for the murder of his 75-year-old father.
Tan was responsible for the murder of his father but was acquited of murder (under the law) due to his mental incapacity, after two psychiatrists from IMH diagnosed him with schizophrenia.
Tan was allowed by the court to speak to a few of his family members after the verdict and seemed to be in good spirits.
Tan had used his bare hands to attack his father after he called him a “good for nothing” and he stopped breathing in the ambulance and was pronounced dead at Changi General Hospital.
The elder Tan was found to have died from strangulation and blood aspiration following an autopsy.
