A video has been circulating online claiming that a ferry that was heading to Batam from Singapore was hijacked by pirates.
It has since been revealed that the video was actually taken from an Indonesian navy simulation exercise in 2020.
The simulation exercise by the Indonesian navy was held on 12 November 2020, according to Batam News, and was held at Karimun, one of the Riau Islands near Singapore and Batam.
Several people who appeared to be reporters, were seen filming the scenes of the exercise.
iNews.id reported that navy personnel were posing as the three “pirates” in the exercise, with one of them being “shot dead”.
These exercises are conducted routinely by the Indonesian navy every half a year, and is part of their training curriculum to improve their response to maritime crime.
