Why do people still take the bus to KL? I did the math, and flying from Seletar is a no-brainer.

I seriously dono why people still waste their time and energy taking the bus to KL. Every long weekend or holiday, the workflow is always the same: people complaining about the massive jams on the Causeway or the North-South Highway, spending 7 to 9 hours trapped in a moving toilet bowl, and arriving in KL completely pancaked and exhausted.

Before anyone starts slamming me in the comments saying “wah, look at this rich elite bragging about money,” please chill. I am not trying to show off. I actually sat down and did the math, and honestly, the bus doesn’t even make financial or logical sense once you factor in the hidden costs and the sheer torture.

The True Cost of the “Cheap” Bus

Everyone thinks the bus is a steal because the ticket itself is cheap. But let’s look at the actual door-to-door experience:

  • The First Mile: You usually have to wake up at some ungodly hour in SG to catch the coach. Unless you live right next to Beach Road or Jurong East, you end up taking a Grab to the designated pickup spot. That’s already Cost #1.
  • The Ticket: Obviously, you pay for the bus ticket. Cost #2.
  • The Arrival: The bus normally drops you off at Berjaya Times Square or TBS. If your hotel or final destination isn’t right there, you are paying for another Grab in KL ringgit.

Plus, the whole process is a logistical headache. You have to lug your bags up and down the bus at both checkpoints just to chop passport. If someone on your bus gets stuck at customs, the whole coach is delayed. And don’t get me started on the North-South Highway. The way some of those express buses drive is downright dangerous; I always feel like I’m risking my life just to save a few bucks.

The Seletar to Subang Lifehack

If you value your time and sanity, flying is the superior option—specifically flying from Seletar Airport (XSP) to Subang Airport (SZB) via Firefly.

+--------------------------+-----------------------+------------------------+
| Feature                  | Coach / Express Bus   | Seletar -> Subang Flight|
+--------------------------+-----------------------+------------------------+
| Door-to-Door Time | 6 - 9 hours (variable)| ~3 hours total |
| Airport Waiting Time | N/A | 45 minutes only |
| Custom Hassle | Get on/off with bags | Fast, air-conditioned |
| Landing Location | TBS / Times Square | Subang (nearer town) |
+--------------------------+-----------------------+------------------------+

Here is why this completely destroys the bus route:

  1. No Changi Drama: You don’t need to show up 2 hours before your flight like you do at Changi. Seletar is tiny. You turn up 45 minutes before, stroll through security in 5 minutes, and you’re good to go.
  2. Actual Flight Time: The flight is practically 1 hour plus-minus. You barely have time to finish a drink and you’re already descending.
  3. Location, Location, Location: Landing in Subang is a massive cheat code. KLIA is practically in Malacca—it takes an hour and a hefty train/taxi fare just to get into the city. Subang is much nearer to central KL, PJ, and Bangsar. You land, hop into a Grab, and you’re at your destination in no time.

When you add up the Grab to the SG coach station, the bus ticket, the food you buy at the ulu Malaysian rest stops, and the Grab from TBS, the price gap between the bus and a budget turboprop flight from Seletar isn’t even that big.

I would rather pay a bit more to save a whole day of my life. Life is too short to spend 8 hours breathing in highway diesel fumes. Change my mind.
