A Thai woman has been arrested after police linked her to a string of alleged thefts targeting travellers at two of Bangkok’s busiest international airports.

The suspect was apprehended at a resort in Sing Buri province following an investigation that began after a passenger reported a bag theft at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

According to police, the victim had fallen asleep for a short period while waiting inside the airport terminal. When she woke up, she discovered that her bag had disappeared.

The missing bag reportedly contained an iPhone 7 Plus, a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses and cash in multiple foreign currencies, including US dollars, euros, British pounds and UAE dirhams.

Authorities estimated the total value of the stolen property at approximately 300,000 baht, equivalent to around S$11,800.

Security officers subsequently reviewed CCTV footage from the airport and identified a female suspect allegedly involved in the theft.

CCTV Footage Leads Police To Suspect

Investigators later discovered that the same woman was allegedly connected to two additional theft cases at Don Mueang International Airport.

Police said the suspect was believed to have stolen belongings from a Malaysian traveller on 16 May and an Indian tourist on 20 May.

After gathering evidence from multiple incidents, officers tracked the suspect to a resort in Sing Buri province, where she was arrested on 30 May.

The woman’s identity has not been publicly released by authorities.

She now faces charges related to theft committed within an airport, an offence that carries a potential jail term of up to three years and a fine of up to 60,000 baht (approximately S$2,360) under Thai law.

In addition, police have filed a separate charge of theft committed at night, which carries a heavier punishment.

If convicted, she could face between one and five years in prison and a fine ranging from 20,000 baht to 100,000 baht (approximately S$790 to S$3,940).

Travellers Urged To Remain Vigilant

The case has once again highlighted the importance of keeping personal belongings secure while travelling through busy airports.

With thousands of passengers passing through airport terminals daily, authorities frequently remind travellers not to leave bags unattended and to remain alert, especially when resting or sleeping in waiting areas.

The arrest follows another airport theft case reported last year involving a foreign national accused of taking a passenger’s bag while she was waiting to board a flight.

Although the suspect in that case claimed the incident was a mistake, legal action was reportedly pursued.

Thai police said investigations into the latest case are ongoing and are working to determine whether the suspect may be connected to any additional thefts that have not yet been reported.

Authorities have encouraged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a similar incident to come forward and assist with investigations.
