TikTok user @crybabytubby, found herself staying at a charity home for the disabled and chronically ill instead of the Airbnb she initially booked in Johor Bahru (JB).
The Unplanned Stay
Crybabytubby, a 27-year-old media professional, had originally planned a trip to JB with a friend. They decided to extend their stay for an extra night but faced a challenge: their initial accommodation was fully booked.
In search of a quick solution, they stumbled upon the Johore Cheshire Home, which was available for a reasonable $39.97 per night. It was conveniently located just a 15-minute drive away from their previous lodging.
An Unusual Location
Their adventure took a peculiar turn as they embarked on the short drive to their new accommodation. Unlike the typical Airbnb homes they had stayed at in JB, this one was located in a more remote area, passing by two cemeteries along the way.
The entrance to the Airbnb looked quite imposing, with a large rolling metal gate and high metal fences stretching into the distance. Crybabytubby couldn’t help but joke about it looking a bit “suspicious.”
Despite the somewhat eerie exterior, the interior of the Airbnb turned out to be surprisingly pleasant. Crybabytubby shared photographs of the corridor and the room, which appeared well-maintained and elegantly simple in decor.
The room even featured a wheelchair-accessible and spacious toilet, demonstrating thoughtful accessibility features.
The Unexpected Curfew
However, the real surprise came later in the evening when Crybabytubby and her friend encountered a curfew. Past 10 pm, the large gate leading to the residence would be locked, and they would need to call security to gain entry. This was certainly not a typical feature of an Airbnb.
Adding to the intrigue, the front gate sported a large “welcome sign,” revealing that the Airbnb was actually part of the Johore Cheshire Home—an old folks’ home. It became evident that their initial perception of the place was quite far from reality.
In hindsight, Crybabytubby decided to check the reviews on Airbnb and discovered that other visitors had mentioned that Johore Cheshire Home was indeed a place intended for the old and sick.
