Woman Allegedly Damages S$1,000 Worth Of Airport Equipment After Flight Cancellation In India
A woman passenger has reportedly been booked by police after allegedly going on a rampage at an airport in India following the cancellation of her flight.
Mamoni Kharat was allegedly involved in a disturbance at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar after an IndiGo flight bound for Kolkata was cancelled because of a technical issue. Authorities said the incident resulted in damage to several pieces of airport equipment.
According to reports, the passenger allegedly damaged a monitor, keyboard and passport-scanning machine during the incident. The equipment was estimated to be worth ₹49,000 in total, equivalent to around S$700 based on recent exchange rates.
Passenger Allegedly Loses Her Temper After Flight Cancellation
The incident reportedly happened after passengers were informed that their IndiGo flight could not operate because of a technical snag. Flight cancellations caused by aircraft or operational issues can be particularly frustrating for travellers, especially when they are left waiting for alternative arrangements.
However, airport authorities allege that Kharat’s reaction went beyond a verbal complaint. She allegedly damaged equipment located at the airport counter, prompting officials to involve the authorities.
An FIR has since been lodged in connection with the incident. The airport has also reportedly sought recovery of the cost of the damaged equipment from the passenger.
Airport Disruptions Can Leave Passengers Frustrated
Flight cancellations can create significant inconvenience for passengers, particularly when they involve missed connections, accommodation arrangements or important appointments at the destination. Technical problems can also result in last-minute changes because airlines have to consider aircraft and passenger safety before allowing a flight to depart.
Despite the frustration involved, damaging airport property can potentially lead to financial and legal consequences. Airports contain expensive computers, security systems, passport-processing equipment and other specialised infrastructure that can cost thousands of dollars to repair or replace.
The incident has also sparked debate online, with social media users divided over the passenger’s alleged actions. Some commenters questioned whether the airline should have provided better alternative arrangements, while others argued that a flight cancellation does not justify damaging public or airport property.
Social Media Users React To The Airport Incident
Several commenters focused on the airport staff, with some praising the employee who reportedly remained calm while dealing with the situation. Others questioned how the alleged damage was allowed to happen and whether airport security personnel should have intervened sooner.
There were also sarcastic comments about the passenger’s behaviour, while some users argued that technical problems can happen with any form of transportation and that passengers should not take their frustration out on frontline workers.
The case remains subject to the legal process. The allegations against Kharat have not been established as fact unless proven in court, while authorities are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the damage and any compensation that may be payable.
For passengers facing a cancelled flight, airline customer-service channels and airport authorities are generally the appropriate avenues for seeking information about refunds, rebooking or alternative travel arrangements. Resorting to property damage, however, can turn an already frustrating travel disruption into a much more serious legal and financial matter.
