Four local egg importers have been banned from importing eggs from Malaysia since the 20th of this month because they did not comply with the license regulations.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) stated that these four importers accounted for about 30% of Singapore’s total supply of eggs, but there is no need for the public to hoard or snap up eggs, because the other 32 egg importers are still operating as usual who are able to meet the local demand for eggs.

The authorities introduced new license regulations in April last year, requiring importers to formulate business continuity plans, such as importing at least 15% of eggs from countries other than the main source country, to ensure a diversified source of local eggs.

Responding to media queries from TODAY, the SFA stated that the four importers were not committed to implementing the relevant plans and were therefore prohibited from importing eggs from the main source countries.
