A fire broke out at Block 92B Telok Blangah Street 31 on 3 August at about 11.40am, inside one of the flats, according to the SCDF on Wednesday.
73-year-old Madam Doreen Ong, rushed to her home while about 50 residents were evacuating, to save her blind husband, according to Lianhe Zaobao.
She was returning home from the market when she saw a crowd gathering and pointing to a HDB unit on the 11th storey that was burning.
She said that he husband who can’t see, was still at home, and she ran home to her unit on the 19th storey to look for her 73-year-old husband.
He apparently didn’t know there was a fire downstairs and thought the burning smell came from joss papers being burned for the Hungry Ghost Festival.
They grabbed their ICs, marriage certificate and some money before evacuating the HDB block.

At about 11.40am today (3 Aug), SCDF was alerted to a fire at the above-mentioned location.
Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was raging and thick black smoke was emitting from a unit on the 11th floor.
Firefighters from Alexandra Fire Station conducted forcible entry into the unit and extinguished the fire using two water jets. As a result of the fire, the entire unit was affected by heat and smoke damage. Damping down operations are ongoing.
A person was assessed by an SCDF paramedic for smoke inhalation and subsequently refused conveyance to the hospital.
About 50 occupants from the affected block were evacuated by the Police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
