The Police recently posted a media release warning the public about a re-emerging scam in which scammers send SMS messages to victims with faked bank headers, purporting to provide fixed deposits with high-interest rates. At least six victims have fallen victim to this fraud since November 2021, with losses totaling at least $495,000.

Victims would get SMS messages with faked headers purporting to be from a bank, promoting fixed deposit promotions with high interest rates. Victims would be asked to phone a number provided in the SMS to register their interest in the offer and acquire further information.

Once contacted, fraudsters would attempt to persuade victims to reveal personal information, such as bank account information or One-Time Password (OTP), or to transfer money to unknown bank accounts.

Tip of the day: Don’t be greedy and you won’t be a victim.
