President Zelensky described the decision as being an uneasy one, and he said that these prisoners will pay their debts to Ukraine in the hottest spots of war.

He said that it was essential for everyone to help fight off the invasion if they are able, and describes the decision as being useful for the protection of Ukraine.

Martial law was also implemented on 24 February, the day of the Russian invasion, and men between the ages of 18 to 60 were not allowed to leave the country.

They were also drafted to reinforce the Ukrainian forces against the Russian onslaught.

In a Facebook broadcast posted yesterday, president Zelensky said:

“When I ran for presidency, I said that each of us is the President. Because we are all responsible for our state. For our beautiful Ukraine.

And now it turns out that each of us is a warrior. The warrior in his or her own place. And I am confident that each of us will win. Glory to Ukraine!”
