Malaysia’s public enemy number one, Jocelyn Chia, continued revelling in the attention for her controversial joke, by throwing further jabs at Malaysia after she got to become a guest columnist for Newsweek.
She wrote a column titled “I was canceled for a joke,” addressing her initial reaction to the backlash that she received for her offensive jokes about Malaysia.
Citing the “lawyer in me”, Chia said that she used to be a lawyer and in the face of a verbal attack, she “rear(ed) her argumentative head and engage(ed) in battle”.
On the situation, she described it as being her against an “angry nation of 33 million people” and added that she received multiple harassments and attempts to hack her social media accounts, including being review-bombed by every venue that she had ever worked at.
Writing for Newsweek
In a Tweet that she posted, announcing the news that she got to be a guest columnist for Newsweek, Chia said that her “first ambition in life was to be a journalist” and revealed that she used to write for The Straits Times and published an op-ed in it.
She also recalled being made to read Newsweek magazines for her Current History course back in Junior College and now she is writing for the same magazine.
She then summed up her Tweet, saying that she feels “KINDA grateful to Malaysia lol.”
Jocelyn Chia’s Tweet
My first ambition in life was to be a journalist, ideally a columnist. I even did a stint writing for the @straits_times, Singapore’s national newspaper, and have published an op-ed piece in it.
More than 20 years later since I first held that ambition, I got invited to be a Guest columnist for – I can’t even believe I’m saying this – NEWSWEEK
Oh my god. I recall my time in Junior College, having to read Newsweek magazines for my Current History course. And now I have an Essay in it!
Honestly, this is actually making me feel KINDA grateful to Malaysia lol.
