In a shocking turn of events on Friday night (Jan. 26), patrons at Platypus Cantina, a Mexican restaurant on East Coast Road, found themselves in an unfortunate situation. A tree branch suddenly fell, causing injuries to at least three people. This incident, witnessed by a diner, highlights the unexpected dangers that can occur even during a routine dining experience.

At approximately 8:50 pm, the tranquility of the outdoor dining area was shattered when a tree branch snapped, descending onto diners enjoying their meals. One eyewitness who was present at the restaurant, described having to swiftly dodge out of the way to avoid the incoming branch.

The aftermath revealed that one passer-by was particularly unlucky, being trapped under the fallen branch. The footage indicated that the branch measured between 3m to 5m in length, causing significant distress to the victim. Another couple, dining nearby, was forcefully knocked out of their seats by the impact. In total, one person required hospitalization, while two others sustained minor injuries.

Fortunately, the staff at Platypus Cantina exhibited commendable quick thinking in the face of adversity. The eyewitness praised their efficiency, stating that they were very attentive to the injured individuals. They distributed ice packs and offered assistance, demonstrating an awesome reaction to the unexpected incident.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, an ambulance was promptly called and arrived within 10 to 15 minutes. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported that one person was taken to Changi General Hospital for treatment, while the other two received on-site assessments for minor injuries.

While it is challenging to predict when a tree branch might fall, this incident emphasizes the importance of vigilance and regular safety inspections, especially in outdoor dining areas with overhanging trees.
