A tragic incident occurred in Malaysia on March 22, 2024, involving the death of a 17-year-old boy, Mohammad Nazmie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan. The boy, a vocational school student in Lahad Datu district in Sabah, Malaysia, was found unconscious and lying on the floor in a hostel room with injuries and bruises on his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officials.
Based on police investigations, Nazmie was accused of stealing RM85 (S$24.10) from two students at the hostel and was allegedly fatally attacked as a result. The police have arrested 13 male suspects, all students, aged 16 to 19, in connection to the incident. The suspects were arrested on the same day and 12 smartphones and a smartphone charger were seized.
The police have obtained a six-day remand order for the suspects, and all the suspects tested negative for drugs during a preliminary urine test. A post-mortem was conducted at Lahad Datu Hospital’s Forensic Department on March 23, and the findings have not been released to avoid speculation.
The case is currently under investigation, and a task force has been set up to investigate the case for murder. The Malaysian authorities urged the public not to speculate, and the Ministry of Education expressed its sadness over the incident and is cooperating with the investigations. The ministry also urged the public to respect the privacy of the deceased’s family.
