22-Year-Old PRC Pleads Not Guilty to Detaining 15-Year-Old Singapore Student

In a troubling case that has garnered significant media attention, a 22-year-old university student named Huang Xiaonan has pleaded not guilty to charges of illegally detaining a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Singapore. The incident, which has raised serious concerns about the safety of minors, unfolded in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, where Huang was arrested following the girl’s disappearance.

The girl, who had not attended school in Singapore, was reported missing by her father, a 48-year-old Chinese national residing in Johor. Within 48 hours of the report, Malaysian police successfully located and rescued the girl in Kuantan, Malaysia, on November 26. Huang is accused of holding her against her will in a hotel room on November 24.

During a hearing at the Johor Bahru Magistrate Court, Huang, who is originally from Dongguan in China’s Guangdong province, was denied bail. The prosecution argued that the severity of the charges warranted this decision, citing concerns that Huang, being a Chinese national, could potentially flee the country. In contrast, Huang’s defense attorney requested bail, highlighting his client’s cooperation with law enforcement and his willingness to surrender his passport. The defense also mentioned that Huang has a relative living in Skudai, which could provide him with local support.

The magistrate ultimately sided with the prosecution, denying bail and setting a deadline of January 27, 2025, for the submission of case-related documents. If convicted, Huang faces a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a fine.

The nature of the relationship between Huang and the victim remains unclear, with the defense attorney expressing uncertainty about the specifics of their connection. This case continues to unfold, drawing attention to issues of child safety and the legal responsibilities surrounding the protection of minors.
