PRC Man Sentenced to 10 Months for Theft Onboard Aircraft

Singapore, 28 May 2025 – Zhang Kun, a 51-year-old Chinese national, has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after being convicted of theft onboard an aircraft. The incident occurred during a flight en route to Singapore on March 17, 2025.

Incident Overview

At approximately 12:16 AM on the day of the incident, the police were alerted to a theft onboard the aircraft. The victim reported that approximately SGD $230, consisting of SGD $200 and RM 100 in cash, along with a credit card, had been stolen from his wallet, which was stored inside his haversack during the flight.

Thanks to the keen observation of a fellow passenger, Mr. K. Visvanathan, who witnessed the theft and provided critical information, officers from the Airport Police Division were able to identify and apprehend Zhang Kun at Changi Airport Terminal 1 upon the flight’s arrival.

Zhang was convicted of theft onboard an aircraft under Section 379 of the Penal Code 1871, in conjunction with Section 3(1) of the Tokyo Convention Act 1971. This offence carries a potential imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine, or both.

Police Statement and Recognition of Vigilance

Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Malathi, Commander of the Airport Police Division (APD), emphasized the serious implications of theft onboard an aircraft, stating, “Theft committed on board an aircraft undermines passengers’ trust and their safety during travel.” She commended Mr. Visvanathan for his public-spiritedness, noting that his timely information was crucial in enabling the police to swiftly identify and arrest the accused.

In recognition of his actions, Mr. Visvanathan was awarded the Public Spiritedness Award on March 25, 2025. The APD hopes that his vigilance will inspire others to contribute to the safety of air travel for all passengers.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and cooperation in maintaining safety and security in public spaces, particularly in the unique environment of air travel.
