Thai Travellers Rush to Exit Cambodia Amid Escalating Border Crisis, Flights Reshuffled

As political tensions between Thailand and Cambodia continue to spiral, a wave of Thai nationals are scrambling to return home, prompting a flurry of last-minute flight changes and emergency travel advisories. Thai authorities, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), have issued warnings of potential disruptions as demand for outbound flights surges.

CAAT has urged travellers flying between the two nations to brace for possible delays and cancellations, noting that flight schedules may change without prior notice. To meet the sudden demand, Thai Airways has upgraded aircraft on key routes, replacing the standard Airbus A320 with the larger Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. This aircraft swap is now in effect for key daily flights including TG586, TG584, TG587 and TG585.

Airlines Increase Capacity as Emergency Returns Rise

Responding swiftly to the unfolding situation, Thai carriers are ramping up operations to assist citizens returning from Cambodia. All seven Thai-flagged airlines have pledged cooperation, with additional carriers such as Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, and Thai AirAsia X placed on standby.

Currently, these airlines operate direct flights between Bangkok and Cambodia:

  • Thai Airways: 16 flights weekly (180-seat aircraft)
  • Thai AirAsia: 28 flights weekly (180-seat aircraft)
  • Bangkok Airways: 40 flights weekly (mix of 180- and 70-seat aircraft)
  • Thai Vietjet: 16 flights weekly (180-seat aircraft)

Travellers are strongly advised to monitor airline updates and embassy announcements, especially via the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. For urgent assistance, Thai citizens can call the embassy’s emergency hotline at (+855) 77 888 114.

Travellers Advised to Prepare Documentation & Monitor Flights

The CAAT recommends that passengers prepare all necessary documents in advance to reduce delays at airports and during immigration checks. Anyone unable to reach the airport is advised to immediately contact their airline for next steps and travel amendment options.

While no official evacuation order has been announced, Thai authorities are clearly treating the situation with urgency. Reports indicate that Thai officials are coordinating closely with airlines to avoid logistical gridlocks and ensure that every citizen seeking to return can do so safely.

With over 100,000 evacuations already underway from conflict zones along the Thai-Cambodian border, and as both countries appeal for de-escalation, this travel crunch could worsen if the situation persists.

Travellers are urged to stay informed, remain calm, and act swiftly.
