A Primary 4 boy from Fairfield Methodist School was allegedly approached by two teenagers who tried to get him to buy a vape while he was walking home from school on 25 July. The incident reportedly occurred in broad daylight, just a short distance from the school, near a pedestrian crossing at Dover Rise, reported Zaobao.

The child did not engage with the individuals and walked away safely. This alarming encounter was highlighted by Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Rachel Ong, who took to social media to alert parents and the wider community.

School Responds Swiftly, Urges Vigilance Among Students

Fairfield Methodist School has since confirmed the incident and taken immediate steps to address safety concerns. In response to media queries, Principal Soh Mei Foong stated that the school had promptly informed the authorities upon learning about the encounter.

All students were subsequently briefed on the matter and reminded of the importance of avoiding interactions with strangers. They were advised to report any suspicious approaches to a trusted adult or the school.

Principal Soh added, “As a precautionary measure, the school will continue to monitor activities in the vicinity of the school premises after dismissal to ensure students’ safety.”

No Further Incidents Reported But Community On Alert

As of 30 July, no additional cases have been reported, according to a Zaobao article. Nevertheless, the incident has sparked concern among parents, with many calling for increased surveillance and community watch efforts around school zones.

The rise in illegal vape usage among youths remains a growing concern in Singapore. Despite strict regulations, such products are still being circulated through underground channels, often targeting unsuspecting students. This incident underscores the need for continuous public education and enforcement to protect minors from being exposed to harmful substances.

Parents are urged to speak with their children about personal safety and staying alert, particularly when commuting alone. Community awareness and open communication between schools, families, and authorities remain vital in safeguarding young students in such situations.
