TOURIST IN PATTAYA, GETS ‘GONG TAO’ IN BAR, S$26,000 ROLEX GOES MISSING

Finnish Tourist Loses Rolex Worth Over S$26,000 After Night Out in Pattaya

A Finnish tourist has reported the theft of a luxury Rolex watch and cash after a night out in Pattaya, raising fresh concerns about traveller safety in nightlife districts popular with foreign visitors.

The 30-year-old tourist, identified as Kenneth Mikael Konttinen, told police that the incident occurred in the early hours after he visited a bar alone. He later met two women working there and spent time drinking with them before inviting them back to his hotel in the Jomtien area.

According to his statement, the group continued drinking in his room until he fell asleep. When he woke up, he discovered that his watch — reportedly worth more than 700,000 Thai baht (approximately S$26,000) — along with 5,000 baht (around S$185) in cash, had gone missing.

Police Launch Investigation Using CCTV Footage

The case was reported at a local police station at around 2am, with authorities now reviewing CCTV footage from both the bar and the hotel to identify the suspects. The identities of the two women have not been disclosed.

Investigators are expected to trace the movements of the individuals involved and may call them in for questioning as part of the ongoing probe. Officials have not confirmed whether any arrests have been made at the time of writing.

Incidents involving theft after social encounters in nightlife areas are not uncommon in parts of Thailand, particularly in tourist-heavy zones. Authorities have repeatedly advised visitors to exercise caution when bringing strangers back to private accommodations.

Pattern Of Similar Theft Cases Emerging

This latest case is not an isolated incident. In recent weeks, multiple tourists have reported similar experiences involving theft after drinking sessions with individuals they had just met.

Earlier in March, an Indian tourist nearly lost a gold necklace worth about 100,000 baht (roughly S$3,700) to a group that included both women and a motorcycle taxi rider. The situation was resolved after witnesses intervened and helped detain the suspects.

In another case, a Russian tourist reported losing both a motorcycle and a mobile phone after drinking with two individuals outside a convenience store. He claimed he fell asleep and later realised his belongings were missing.

Rising Safety Concerns In Tourist Hotspots

Additional reports in February involved a South Korean tourist who lost over 20,000 baht (about S$740) after a similar encounter on Walking Street. In that incident, one suspect allegedly threatened the victim with a weapon before fleeing.

Authorities in Thailand continue to monitor the situation, as repeated cases risk affecting tourism confidence — a key pillar of the country’s economy.

Travellers are advised to remain vigilant, avoid excessive alcohol consumption in unfamiliar settings, and secure valuables such as luxury watches, cash, and passports when travelling abroad.

While nightlife remains a major draw for visitors, this incident highlights the importance of personal safety and situational awareness, particularly in environments where opportunistic crimes may occur.
