Residents and businesses in Yishun were affected after an underground water pipe leak caused flooding near the junction of Yishun Avenue 5 and Sembawang Road in the early hours of May 10. The incident, which occurred at around 1am, resulted in water overflowing into nearby areas, prompting a response from national water agency PUB.
According to PUB, repair crews were immediately deployed to isolate the damaged pipe and carry out rectification works. Despite the flooding, authorities confirmed that there was no disruption to water supply for homes and commercial units in the surrounding estate.
Videos circulating online showed water spreading across the affected area, including near a coffee shop located close to the leak. A TikTok user, who identified himself as a food delivery rider, shared footage of the scene and said he was unable to collect a customer’s order due to the flooding conditions.
The incident attracted attention from residents in the neighbourhood, with some expressing concerns about traffic access and potential disruptions to nearby businesses. Water from the leak appeared to spread across sections of the road and pedestrian walkways before repair operations were initiated.
A resident interviewed by Singapore Uncensored said: “When we came in today morning to open our shops and it was flooded and our goods were damaged, the amount of mud that got in was ridiculous“
PUB Conducting Investigations Into Cause of Leak
PUB stated in a social media update that investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the underground pipe to fail. The agency is also working together with Nee Soon Town Council to conduct cleaning operations in the affected areas after the leak was contained.
Underground pipe failures can occur due to several factors, including ageing infrastructure, soil movement, pressure fluctuations, or wear and tear over time. Singapore’s water infrastructure network is regularly monitored and maintained, though unexpected incidents can still happen occasionally.
The flooding incident also highlights the importance of urban infrastructure maintenance and emergency response planning in densely populated housing estates such as Yishun. Quick deployment of repair teams helped minimise further impact on nearby homes and businesses, while maintaining uninterrupted water supply reduced inconvenience for residents.
In recent years, Singapore has invested heavily in smart water management systems and infrastructure upgrades to improve long-term reliability and reduce pipe failures.
