Thai police have arrested six foreign women in a vice crackdown along Bangkok’s popular Sukhumvit district after residents reportedly complained about open solicitation in public areas frequented by tourists.
According to reports, the operation took place on May 7 around Soi Sukhumvit 4, a nightlife hotspot known for its bars, hotels and entertainment venues attracting large numbers of international visitors every night.
Police said the arrests were made after videos circulated on Thai social media allegedly showing groups of foreign women approaching men on the streets to promote paid adult services. Residents in the area also reportedly claimed the activities were damaging the neighbourhood’s reputation and affecting tourism perceptions.
Authorities observed several women standing along the roadside before moving in to make arrests. The group included five Vietnamese nationals and one Uzbek national.
Under Thailand’s law, those accused of publicly soliciting for vice-related activities can face fines of up to 1,000 baht, which is approximately S$37.
Sukhumvit Remains Major Focus For Thai Authorities
Thai authorities have stepped up enforcement efforts in Bangkok and other tourist-heavy destinations over recent months as concerns grow over illegal activities involving foreign nationals.
Police have not confirmed whether the six women will face deportation proceedings or further immigration action after the arrests.
This latest case follows another major operation in March in the same Sukhumvit area, where 16 foreign women were detained over alleged vice activities. That earlier group reportedly included women from Tanzania, Kenya and Vietnam.
Crackdowns have also intensified in Pattaya, one of Thailand’s busiest nightlife destinations. In April, authorities arrested another 16 foreign women accused of offering adult services along Pattaya Beach. Those detained reportedly came from countries including Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Uganda.
In a separate February operation, Thai police arrested 20 foreign women during another vice raid in Pattaya. Although many denied involvement, officers reportedly seized condoms and lubricants during the investigation.
Thailand Tightens Monitoring In Tourist Areas
Beyond Bangkok and Pattaya, authorities have also carried out similar enforcement actions in other parts of Thailand.
Two Ugandan women were arrested in Koh Pha Ngan in March over alleged vice-related offences, while another operation in Kanchanaburi led to the arrest of two Myanmar nationals linked to alleged vice and human trafficking involving underage migrants.
Thailand remains one of Southeast Asia’s top tourism destinations, welcoming millions of travellers annually. Areas such as Sukhumvit, Nana Plaza and Pattaya’s Walking Street continue to attract international visitors due to their nightlife, entertainment and hospitality sectors.
However, Thai authorities appear increasingly determined to tighten enforcement against activities viewed as harming the country’s tourism image and public order, especially amid growing scrutiny on foreign-operated businesses and underground vice activities targeting tourists.
