A man allegedly sprayed an unidentified substance inside a shopping mall in Tokyo, leaving multiple people feeling unwell and triggering a massive emergency response.

The incident took place at GINZA Six, a luxury shopping complex located in the upscale Ginza district, on May 25.

According to Japanese media reports, authorities received multiple emergency calls after shoppers and staff detected a strong odour inside the mall.

Several individuals later complained of symptoms including sore throats and discomfort after inhaling the substance.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the reports surfaced.

14 People Conveyed To Hospital

Local media reported that around 25 people said they felt unwell following the incident.

Among them, 14 individuals were taken to hospital for further medical checks and treatment.

Authorities also dispatched 53 fire department vehicles, including fire engines and rescue units, to the scene due to concerns over the unidentified substance.

The incident reportedly occurred on the first floor of the shopping mall, causing alarm among shoppers and nearby staff members.

Witnesses at the scene described people covering their mouths and quickly moving away from the affected area.

One woman told Japanese broadcaster NHK that the air inside the mall felt “strange” when she entered the building.

She said her throat became scratchy and numb after walking into an ATM area, prompting her to immediately leave the premises and contact emergency services.

Suspect Flees Before Authorities Arrive

According to reports, surveillance camera footage allegedly captured a man spraying a substance inside the mall before fleeing the scene.

The suspect had already escaped by the time police and firefighters arrived.

Authorities are currently investigating the nature of the substance used and are searching for the man involved.
