Two Malaysian men were injured after a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in southern Thailand on June 29, authorities confirmed.
The incident took place at around 12:40pm Malaysian time in the Tak Bai district of Narathiwat province, an area that has experienced periodic unrest over the years.
According to reports, a Malaysian-registered Proton X50 was travelling through Kampung Sapom when an improvised explosive device detonated by the roadside. The powerful blast damaged the vehicle and left two occupants injured.
Three People Were In The Vehicle
Initial investigations revealed that three individuals were inside the sport utility vehicle at the time of the explosion.
Two Malaysian men, aged 38 and 45, sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Narathiwat for treatment. Authorities said both victims were in stable condition and remained under medical observation.
The third occupant escaped the incident without any injuries, despite the severity of the blast.
Images circulating online showed significant damage to the Proton X50, highlighting the force of the explosion.
Victims Receiving Treatment
Member of Parliament for the Sungai Golok and Tak Bai constituencies, Amin, confirmed the incident and said the injured Malaysians received prompt medical attention.
He explained that the vehicle was travelling normally along the road when the explosive device suddenly detonated, causing damage to the vehicle and injuries to those inside.
Local authorities in Thailand have since launched investigations into the attack and are working to determine those responsible.
Malaysian And Thai Police Working Together
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff also confirmed that Malaysian police had been informed of the incident.
He said law enforcement agencies from both countries are maintaining close communication and cooperation to establish the circumstances surrounding the blast.
Southern Thailand, particularly the provinces bordering Malaysia, has witnessed sporadic violence linked to a long-running insurgency. Security forces regularly monitor the region and investigate incidents involving explosives and armed attacks.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the identities of the victims or whether the explosion specifically targeted the vehicle.
Investigations are ongoing as Thai security officials gather evidence and assess the latest developments surrounding the bombing.
