ALLEGED RAPIST WHO NO-SHOW IN COURT, ARRESTED AT HOTEL, PLANNED TO FLEE IN BOAT TO M’SIA

A 21-year-old man who was due to plead guilty to sexual assault and attempted rape but ended up failing to show up in court, was arrested on 23 March at the Bencoolen Strand Hotel, with a friend of his who was staying there.

He was then hauled back to court and will be charged with an additional offence of perverting the course of justice.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Winston Man, said that police officers conducted an operation and arrested him at the hotel, on Tuesday afternoon.

His friend, who was staying at the hotel, was also arrested and will be charged with harbouring an offender.

The accused’s lawyer, Mr Clarence Lun, revealed that the accused wanted to take a boat to flee to Malaysia, and that he was not in contact with his father after running away.

DPP Man urged against granting bail to the accused, labeling him a “flight risk”, highlighting that he had breached a basic term of the conditions of his bail.

The accused is currently facing seven charges in total.
