The former security guard was convicted on a charge of robbery and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, along with 12 strokes of the cane yesterday (30 September).

He begged the court for leniency and promised not to do it again.

But the Judge said that the minimum punishment for the crime was a mandatory sentence of 3 years and 12 strokes.

What happened?

Ismail wore a long sleeve shirt and a hoodie on 19 April at around 4.10am, and went to a 7-Eleven outlet at Bukit Batok Street 52.

He bought a bottle of coffee and asked the cashier if he could buy alcohol, to which she refused to sell him as it was against the law to sell alcohol at that timing.

She threatened to call the police if Ismail refused to leave.

Ismail then showed her a plastic dummy nunchaku in his pocket, threatening to cut her if she refused to sit down.

The cashier did as she was told and asked him not to hurt her.

Ismail then took 8 packs of cigarettes from the shop and fled the scene.
