Co-living dystopia
Ang moh here. The state of the rental market in SG (from a renter’s point of view) is abysmal. Both my current and previous bedrooms are in so called “co-living” apartment. These are originally 3-bedroom apartments where the landlord added 2 more common rooms in the living room, so as to maximize his rental yield.
This way they can rent 1 master bedroom + 4 common rooms + 1 maids room ; or 6 strangers sharing 2 bathrooms and living in an apartment with no living room. This is called “co-living” but what it really is, is a shole. Sadly, almost every room I see on propertyguru now is in such a horrendous “co-living”. And there’s no turning back, since if a place has no more living room, one has to demolish the extra common rooms to make it back to a proper apartment, which I doubt many landlords would do.
I mean I understand local landlords, the rental money they can collect is just mind-blowing: if the area is good, quick math shows that such a co-living can yield 12k+ sgd/month in the current market. Must be sweet to be a Singaporean landlord.
Here are what netizens think:
- Yes, it is getting too crazy and expensive. I feel you and hope prices cool down.
- How is that co-living I thought co-living means will have shared facilities this sounds like just a rented room sadly.
- Yep. Welcome to the property shole that is Singapore. If you dont own a place, youre at a loss.
- If only you know the mthly installment. It’s the bank and developer squeezing all the ppl and taking advantage of the Singapore Dream the people wish for.
