Navigating Workplace Expectations: A Personal Account of Conflict and Consequences

In the fast-paced environment of a small SME, where every team member plays a crucial role, the balance between personal time and professional responsibilities can often become blurred. This was the reality for one employee who, while on overseas leave, found themselves at the center of a heated confrontation with their boss over a newly assigned task. Tasked with editing and posting social media content, the employee initially communicated their intention to complete the work after their return, prioritizing their well-deserved time off. However, feeling a sense of guilt for not being more available to support their already limited team, they ultimately decided to submit the work earlier than planned.

What followed was an unexpected and harsh reprimand from their boss, who criticized the employee for prioritizing personal social media updates over company responsibilities. This confrontation escalated quickly, leading to accusations of selfishness and ultimately resulting in the employee’s dismissal. Now left feeling unfairly treated and unemployed, they seek guidance on how to navigate the aftermath of this conflict and what steps to take next. This story highlights the complexities of workplace dynamics, the challenges of managing expectations, and the importance of clear communication in professional settings.

Story:

I work in a small SME with only very few workers. I was recently on overseas leave and my boss assigned me a new task when I was away. The task was to edit some social media content and post it online.

Usually when I get assigned such work, I get cracking on it immediately (also depending on the work I have on hand) and submit it by the end of the day. Although I had the capabilities and brought the resources overseas to work, I told my boss that I would get back in a few days time (which was still within my leave period) as afterall, I was on leave and was going on tours.

However, subsequently I felt bad that there was not much staff support to start out with, and I completed and submitted the work at the end of the 2nd day after the work was assigned to me. I was shocked when upon submission, I got a scolding from my boss that I had the time to post about my trip on my Instagram stories and feed the past 2 days, but gave an excuse for requesting for a few days for my company’s social media posts. I defended myself that I was on leave, and although I gave a duration of a few days, I still submitted it at the end of the 2nd day.

Eventually, the conversation got heated. I was reprimanded for being selfish for not helping the company when help was needed and I was told that I did not need to go back to work anymore after my holidays as they did not require an incapable worker like me. I feel really unfairly treated and am left unemployed now. I would really need some advice on how to proceed from here please.
