CAR SKIDS AT ORCHARD ROAD AND CRASHES INTO PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY AT ORCHARD

Orchard Road, often referred to as the shopping haven of Singapore, witnessed an unexpected turn of events as a blue car lost control and careened into a pedestrian walkway.

The Location and Circumstances

The crash took place near MT Elizabeth road, a well-known landmark in the vicinity. Despite the late hour, the area wasn’t devoid of activity, as police were swift to respond to the scene. A tow truck was also dispatched to address the situation, highlighting the immediate response from authorities.

The aftermath of the crash left parts of the car scattered around the scene, bearing testimony to the impact of the collision. Fortunately, given the late hour, no pedestrians were present on the walkway at the time, averting what could have been a tragic outcome. The incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations and the need for heightened vigilance.

Possible Causes of the Skid

Several factors could have contributed to the car’s skid. Rain-slicked roads, worn-out tires, or even excessive speed could have played a role in the loss of control. Understanding the root causes of such accidents is crucial for implementing effective preventive measures. Some netizens took note of the timing of the accident and said it could be drinking-related. However it is unclear.

Authorities are diligently investigating the crash to determine the exact sequence of events. This meticulous process involves analyzing skid marks, evaluating vehicle conditions, and reviewing possible surveillance footage. The findings will shed light on the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Here are what netizens think:

The offence of driving while under influence of alcohol under Section 67(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000, or imprisonment for a term up to 12 months, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $20,000, and imprisonment for a term up to two years. Offenders may also face disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is an extremely dangerous and irresponsible act. All motorists are reminded to abide by traffic rules to keep the roads safe for everyone. The Traffic Police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who choose to flout traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users.

UNDERPAID WORKER HAD ENOUGH, NOT DOING ANYTHING AT WORK UNTIL HE GETS A RAISE

0

How do I professionally say, β€œI’m not doing anything until I get a raise”?

Like many of you all, I’m at a job where I’m overworked and underpaid. Lately, I’ve had to take on managerial-level responsibilities (e.g. firing someone), which did not end well.

In the last month, I’ve had to do damage control due to a hysterical ex-employee going on a defamation spree, hire new staff, take on additional work in the interim, train new staff, and handle big projects on top of the day-to-day stuff, which is already overwhelming.

Every time I bring up a raise to my boss, he says the same thing: β€œI’m working hard to get you that raise!” I’d believe he was working his butt off if he wasn’t going on overseas holidays every other week.

Long story short: I’m at the point where I’m ready to say no to any additional work; I just need to find a tactful way to do it.

Netizens’ comments

  1. Of course, I’d be happy to help sir. Just let me know what other duties I’m assigned to that can be put on pause while I do so.
  2. Your boss won’t do anything to get you promoted. He wants you to do the dirty part of his job and that’s it.
  3. It’s a tricky situation, but if you are helping other people with projects that were not supposed to be yours and your manager comes and ask you if you can help, you can say you are working in your main project and want it to be the best it can be done.
  4. What i said last time they tried giving me a new task
“Thank you for thinking of me for this opportunity. I think its right up my alley and could help you with. But first well either have to look at my schedule or my pay. I already have too much on my plate with the time i can work. A raise would help compensate for all this extra work or decide what need to be put on hold”
They still tried to shovel it my way but i put it on the side until it was crashing and burning and they add no choice to hire someone new.

S’PORE WOMAN SAYS HAVING KIDS IS A LUXURY THAT ONLY THE RICH CAN AFFORD

0

Does anyone else feel like having kids these days is a luxury that only high SES folks can afford?

Context: My husband (32M) and I (31F) really love children and can handle the child-rearing really well based on work as well as babysitting relatives (cousins/nieces/nephews).

But we just feel like we can’t afford having one because of the high standard of living. Also, our combined income is only $7k after CPF.

We’re also just renting now because of a certain situation which I won’t delve into. Even if manage to BTO, we’ll only probably be able to get keys earliest like 5years from now or can even be 10years from now if there are delays and this is assuming we can even get lucky with the ballot.

That’s why we can’t help but envy those who are younger than us and can just have kids without having to worry about their finances.

So I just wanted to know if we’re the only ones feeling this way because I know a lot of people our age and younger choose not to have children.

But for us, we want them so badly, it’s just that we feel like we are too poor to give them a comfortable living.

Netizens’ comments

My neighbour, he is a delivery driver. Wife not working. They have 4 kids. All going to school.

Total household income does not even reach 4k including his overtime. They seem to be a very happy family and on weekends they go for bbq at the seaside. Sometimes we go together as families.

He told me, life isnt about the money. Its about being happy with your family. Your health relies on your happiness. His kids study well, bring in good grades, one is preparing for his psle and not going to tuition but expecting to get a good sec school with express. He is happy about it.

They have 3 meals a day at home and when they go for holidays, its usually a family trip to Malaysia where they have good moments. Visited their house during hari raya and he showed me a lot of photos. Hes only 35 years old. Good feat for my abang!

His advise to me: if you want to make a family, dont think about the money. Theres always a blessing.

ELDERLY DAD PAYS $80 FOR DATA, REFUSE TO GET CHEAPER PLAN CAUSE EVERYONE USING SAME LINE

0

Paying $80 a month for data, dad refuses to let me change to a cheaper mobile plan. Help…

Hi everyone. Not sure if I’m asking this question at the right place but I really need help.

I’m paying around $80 per month for data and I’m thinking of changing my mobile plan because I know that that’s a ridiculous amount to pay for, after knowing that my friends only pay around $20 or less a month…

But the problem now is that my dad refuses to let me change my mobile plan because β€œour entire family is using the same line (Singtel) so why you want to change?”

He also has the ownership of my mobile number and he refuses to transfer the ownership to me although I’m already 21. So I can’t change it without his consent…

Is there any way I can change my mobile plan and take ownership of my own mobile without having to ask him beforehand? He’ll never say yes so discussing with him first is out of the question. I can deal with the consequences (of him possibly hitting/verbally abusing me) later when he finds out himself.

Someone pls advise. Thank you so so so much!

Edit: Some of you are asking if we’re using a family plan, I’m not so sure but I just know that I pay $80 for my own mobile, my sibling pays for his own, and my parents pay for their own as well. Mum is using prepaid.

I don’t understand why my dad wants us to use the same carrier either.. some things he do just doesn’t make sense to me and I’m equally confused as you guys..

like for e.g many years ago my entire family was using android including me, but I like iphone better for personal preference.

But my dad die die didn’t want me to change because same reason as the mobile plan, β€œour entire family is using android so why you want to change to iphone?” I’m using iphone now though, haha.

2nd edit: I pay for my own phone bill.

50 Y.O MAN STARTED FIRE OUTSIDE TOA PAYOH FLAT AFTER DISPUTE, JAILED 13 DAYS

0

50-year-old Patrick Francis was jailed 13 days earlier today (10 August) after pleading guilty to a charge of mischief, according to The Straits Times.

In the quiet neighborhood of Lorong 5 Toa Payoh, an ordinary Housing Board flat became the scene of a tumultuous incident that unfolded shortly past midnight on May 8, 2022.

The tranquility of the night was shattered when a man, identified as Patrick Francis, took matters into his own hands, creating a ruckus that culminated in an act of arson at the doorstep of the unit.

A Fiery Altercation

The series of events began with a confrontation outside a Housing Board flat occupied by Mr. Dharam R.D. and his girlfriend, Ms. Tang Yee Peng.

The incident took an unexpected turn when Patrick Francis, 50, resorted to drastic measures in response to the occupants’ refusal to open the door.

A Dangerous Gamble

In a harrowing turn of events, Patrick ignited a fire at the doorstep of the unit when his initial attempts to gain entry went unanswered.

The flames flickered dangerously close to engulfing the surroundings, but swift action by Mr. Dharam R.D. averted a potential disaster. With the aid of a fire extinguisher, the flames were subdued before they could escalate further.

The chain of events was set in motion when Ms. Tang Yee Peng requested a small space in another flat owned by Patrick’s mother to accommodate a prayer altar.

While the reasons behind the request remain undisclosed, Patrick’s family acquiesced to the arrangement. The understanding persisted until the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted daily life.

Ms. Tang’s return to Singapore after the pandemic lockdown concluded marked the resurgence of tensions. Upon her return, she discovered that the lock on the prayer altar had been changed, prompting her to confront Patrick’s mother.

This disagreement served as the catalyst for the late-night altercation that eventually led to the act of arson.

The aftermath of Patrick’s actions left a trail of damage, both physical and psychological, in its wake. While the fire’s immediate impact was controlled, the repercussions were significant.

The lower section of the main door and surrounding areas bore the brunt of the damage. As a result, Mr. Dharam R.D. had to repaint the unit’s metal gate, and the Housing Board replaced the main wooden door.

The Heists Unveiled

The alleged trail of theft began on May 2 when Fong purportedly targeted a shop located within the Paya Lebar Square shopping mall. It is claimed that he successfully swiped a box of Pokemon cards, valued at $212.40.

Two days later, Fong’s alleged actions took him to a convenience store situated on Paya Lebar Road. This time, he is accused of making off with a box of Pokemon cards carrying a price tag of $110.60.

The saga took an additional twist on May 8, as Fong reportedly targeted yet another convenience store, this time located on Commonwealth Avenue. The contents of his loot? A box of Pokemon cards valued at $270.

LTA TRIALLING NEW TOUCHLESS TRAFFIC LIGHT BUTTONS – NO NEED PRESS, JUST WAVE

0

In a stride towards technological innovation and enhanced user experience, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has introduced a novel solution that is set to transform the way pedestrians interact with signalised crossings.

The latest addition to the urban landscape comes in the form of touchless buttons, designed to activate the Green Man signal without the need for any physical contact. As part of a forward-thinking initiative, these touchless buttons are being deployed at select signalised crossings across Singapore in a 6-month trial period.

A Gesture of Progress

LTA’s touchless buttons allow pedestrians to activate the Green Man simply by waving their hand in front of the sensor.

The trial phase of this groundbreaking concept is being rolled out across four signalised crossings. These strategic locations were chosen to represent a diverse range of pedestrian traffic scenarios, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of the technology’s performance.

The four locations selected for the touchless button trial are:

  1. Jalan Besar near Syed Alwi Road
  2. Tampines Street 86 near Blk 879A
  3. Bukit Batok Street 32 near St Anthony’s Primary School
  4. Yishun Street 21 near Blk 219

Despite the shift to a more futuristic interface, there is no alteration to the waiting and crossing time at these designated locations.

Pedestrian safety remains paramount, and the touchless buttons are seamlessly integrated into the existing signalised crossing systems.

The reduction of physical contact with conventional buttons is anticipated to extend the lifespan of the infrastructure, potentially leading to cost savings in maintenance and replacements.

As the 6-month trial unfolds, LTA is keenly interested in gathering feedback from the community. Public input will play a pivotal role in determining the efficacy of the touchless buttons and their seamless integration into the urban landscape.

As the trial period progresses and data accumulates, LTA will be closely monitoring the touchless button deployment.

Regular updates are expected, providing insights into the technology’s performance and the potential for a wider rollout in the future.

SG WOMAN ALLEGEDLY TRAPPED 2 TODDLERS IN DARK STOREROOM, ASSAULTED THEM AT PRESCHOOL

0

A 28-year-old woman has been accused of subjecting two innocent toddlers to a series of horrifying treatment at a preschool.

The allegations include trapping them in a dark storeroom and behind a table, as well as physically assaulting them, according to Channel NewsAsia.

Another woman has also been implicated for failing to protect one of the children during an episode of ill-treatment.

The names of the school and the two women cannot be revealed due to a court order protecting the identity of the two victims.

Unveiling the Shocking Charges

The accused, a 28-year-old woman, was charged on August 3rd with six counts of ill-treating the children under her care in accordance with the Children and Young Persons Act.

On June 22, 2022, the accused woman is said to have trapped a two-year-old boy under a table at the preschool, subjecting him to a harrowing 15-minute ordeal.

Subsequently, she confined him within a dark storeroom for six to seven minutes before adding to his torment by throwing foam blocks into the room while he remained trapped.

The alleged mistreatment continued as she targeted a one-year-and-eight-month-old girl. The girl’s face was reportedly poked, slapped, and she was forced onto her feet, only to be pushed to the ground multiple times.

The woman is also accused of hitting the girl’s face with foam blocks, rubbing tissue paper into her skin forcefully, and subjecting her to violent pinching.

The distressing events did not end there. The woman is alleged to have subjected the two toddlers to further abuse on June 27, 2022.

In a shocking display of cruelty, she pulled a chair from beneath the two-year-old boy, causing him to fall to the ground. She then seated him on a chair and pushed him into a table.

The girl, who was again targeted, was trapped beneath a table laden with objects, with the accused shoving the table multiple times, further traumatizing her.

Over a span of approximately half an hour, the woman purportedly continued her barrage of attacks on the girl. Armed with a plastic divider, she repeatedly struck the girl’s face while she remained trapped behind and beneath the table.

Not content with her actions, the woman allegedly redirected her aggression towards the boy, subjecting him to forceful pinching and slapping.

The Legal Landscape

During her court appearance, the accused woman’s lawyer revealed a significant detail – the woman was five months pregnant at the time of being charged.

Another 28-year-old woman has also been implicated in the disturbing episode. She faces a single charge of failing to protect the girl from ill-treatment. Her involvement revolves around the incident where the girl was targeted with a plastic divider.

Each charge of ill-treating a child under the Children and Young Persons Act, as well as permitting such ill-treatment, carries a potential penalty of up to eight years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$8,000, or both.

At the time of writing, the cases against the two women are still pending.

GIRL ACTS RICH TO KEEP UP WITH HER FRIENDS, END UP BAGS ARE RENTALS

0

I remember like it was yesterday the moment I had my first taste of the high life. It was my freshman year in uni and, as if straight out of a movie, my newfound friends and I had been invited to a pool party at the luxurious mansion of one of our classmates. I was in awe at the sheer size of the place, the grandiose decorations, and the expensive cars parked outside. But the most impressive part for me was the designer clothing and accessories that everyone around me was wearing.

I remember looking around and feeling completely out of place. I’d never seen so many expensive handbags, designer shoes, and high-end apparel in one place. I was embarrassed and ashamed that I didn’t have anything like that to wear. All I had was a few thrift store dresses that I had bought with what little money I had left over from my allowance.

That’s when it hit me. The realization that I was going to have to do something if I wanted to fit in with my new friends and the lifestyle that they were living. I had to act rich.

So I started to do my research. I scoured the internet looking for the latest trends in designer clothing and accessories. I searched for deals and discounts on designer items, and I even asked my friends about their favorite brands and styles. I was determined to look and feel like I belonged in this world, even if I couldn’t afford any of it.

But then I had an idea.

I started to rent the designer handbags and accessories that I wanted. I found a few online rental platforms that allowed me to rent designer items for a fraction of the cost. I could rent designer bags and shoes for a day, a week, or even a month. I was able to get my hands on designer items that I would have never been able to afford otherwise.

At first, I was a little skeptical about the whole idea. I was worried that people would be able to tell that my bags and shoes were rentals. But I quickly realized that no one was paying attention to that kind of stuff. Everyone was too busy living their own lives to worry about what was in my bag or on my feet.

I was so relieved. I had found a way to fit in with my friends without having to actually spend a lot of money. I could rent designer items for a fraction of the cost and no one would be any the wiser.

It was a great plan, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t without its challenges. For starters, I had to keep track of when I rented the items and when I needed to return them. I also had to make sure I kept them in perfect condition or else I would be charged for any damages. And, of course, I had to keep up with the latest trends so that I could rent the items that were in style.

But through it all, I managed to keep up with my friends and the lifestyle that they were living. I was able to rent designer items and dress like I belonged in their world. It was a great feeling and it also helped boost my confidence.

In the end, I learned that, sometimes, trying to keep up with the Joneses isn’t always the best option. It’s okay to be different and it’s alright to dress for yourself and not for other people. I also learned that, sometimes, renting is better than buying. After all, who knows what could happen tomorrow?
