In a disturbing case of online deception, a teenage duo in Singapore managed to scam around 15 to 20 victims out of approximately $1,500 collectively., according to The Straits Times.

Pleading guilty on December 20, the now 19-year-old youth faced charges, including cheating, for orchestrating a scam where he and his alleged 17-year-old partner pretended to offer obscene services for cash.

Operating from May to October 2022, the duo exploited Telegram and other online platforms to carry out their deceitful acts.

The Offenses and Guilty Plea

The now-19-year-old youth pleaded guilty to five charges, with one specifically related to the cheating offense. Among his other offenses were driving before the legal age of 18, where he rented cars for various activities such as late-night suppers, meeting friends, and visiting Bukit Brown cemetery.

His 17-year-old alleged partner is expected to plead guilty on December 22. The identities of both individuals remain protected under the Children and Young Persons Act, as some of the crimes were committed when they were below 18.

The Scam Operation

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ronnie Ang outlined that the duo conceived the idea of making “fast cash” in May 2022.

They initiated a scam wherein the girl falsely offered obscene services on Telegram in exchange for money. Utilizing online photos of girls as profile pictures, they adopted pseudonyms like “Gwen,” “Ash,” and “Amanda” on their Telegram accounts.

By joining public chat groups related to hitchhiking and those offering obscene services, they targeted individuals interested in the fake accounts.

Deceptive Tactics

To lend credibility to their scheme, the duo went the extra mile. They sent voice notes featuring the girl’s voice, assuring their targets of her authenticity.

The scammers then arranged meetings with their victims, demanding deposits ranging from $10 to $50 beforehand. Payment was directed to the man’s PayNow account.

Upon the victims’ arrival at the designated meeting spot, the duo claimed discomfort, requested more money, and subsequently cut off communication, blocking the victims.

The scam came to light when a 33-year-old man reported being scammed on October 7, 2022. Falling victim to the faux obscene services offer, he approached the police, triggering an investigation into the deceptive operation.

Legal Consequences and Sentencing

The 19-year-old offender awaits sentencing after a probation report has been called for. His return to court is scheduled for January 31, 2024. The legal proceedings against the 17-year-old accomplice are expected to unfold after her upcoming guilty plea.

Discovered by Facebook user Jeremy See around 9:30 am on December 20, the victim’s car was not only adorned with reddish-brown smears of what was confirmed as real feces but also featured an angry note and additional items placed strategically on the vehicle.

Aside from the foul-smelling excrement on the car’s windscreen, the aggrieved party added insult to injury by leaving a handwritten note expressing anger and explicit language. The note, addressed to “(name) K.N.N.B.C.C.B.,” vented frustration about perceived grievances and personal matters, threatening retaliation.

Creative Vandalism: Traffic Cone and More

The revenge didn’t stop at fecal vandalism and a strongly-worded note. The mysterious vandal went on to place a conspicuous orange traffic cone on the car’s hood, adding a surreal touch to the unconventional act. Additionally, a massive cardboard box found its way onto the car’s roof, and a toppled slushie cup, possibly used to transport the feces, was left nearby.

Jeremy See, the first to share pictures of the scene, described the car owner’s reaction as “priceless.” The man, presumably shocked and resigned, spent a significant 20 minutes in his defiled car before seeking assistance from the authorities.

Police Involvement

A seemingly disturbed police officer was later seen engaging in a conversation with the car owner, who, according to reports, held a key granting access to the vehicle.

Subsequently, The Straits Times reported that a 52-year-old man has since been arrested for public nuisance.

Following the slashing incident last night (20 December) that saw 4 people, including the assailant, suffering injuries and sent to the hospital, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean issued a statement on his Facebook page addressing the issue.

He acknowledged that there were concerns among Singaporeans following the incident, and he allayed those fears by stating that the slashing incident was not a random one, but rather, it stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the parties involved.

He added that the suspect is believed to have acted alone in the slashing, and that all the injured parties are currently hospitalised and assessed to be in stable condition(s).

Recap on the incident

The incident at Pasir Ris West Plaza on the evening of December 20th was a shocking and tragic event that left at least four people injured, including the 61-year-old suspected assailant, according to The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

The rampage occurred around 4 pm outside the Royal Regent provision shop, where eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene.

The victims, a 53-year-old man, a 53-year-old woman, and a 55-year-old woman, were allegedly attacked by a man in his 60s wielding a kitchen knife. Despite suffering varying degrees of injuries, they were conscious when transported to the hospital.

Witnesses recounted a significant police presence, with over 30 officers, some armed with rifles, indicating the severity of the situation.

One witness mentioned that the two female victims were sisters who bravely fought off the attacker, despite sustaining injuries, as reported by The Straits Times.

The assailant, also injured in the slashing, did not attempt to flee the scene and collapsed outside the shop. He was later sent to the hospital semi-conscious and subsequently arrested for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon.

Eyewitness accounts described a disturbing scene with goods scattered on the ground and blood stains marking a trail over five meters.

One victim was purportedly so severely injured that their eyeball almost fell out, while another had her back slashed, according to a witness who spoke to Lianhe Zaobao.

Shops nearby had to be cordoned off, and a video posted on Facebook by Patrick Tan showed the aftermath, with claims that two staff members were slashed, resulting in one losing an eye.

According to the Singapore Police Force’s preliminary investigations, the assailant knew the victims and was not on friendly terms with them, as reported by Channel NewsAsia.
