WOMAN CHARGED 50 CENTS FOR TAP WATER & BOTTLED WATER FOR $3, ASKS IS IT “ACCEPTABLE”

0

Is it acceptable for restaurants to charge for tap water?

One of the biggest annoyance I have when dining out is to have a waiter tell me “We charge 50c for water” Even worse are places that refuse to give tap water and only allow you to purchase “bottled water” at $3 or more.

I don’t agree with the practice and made it a point not to return to restaurants that charge for water but I recently had an argument with a friend who said he understood why restaurants did it and I was being impractical.

Help me out here. Am I going over board for boycotting these restaurants?

Netizens’ comments

  1. I just skip the water and order other drinks lol. Yes boycotting is a good option. 18% tax on top of the whole cost and they still want to charge for water. Pretty shitty if you ask me since our water is perfectly safe to drink and serve. They just don’t want to
    • Thanks for pointing out restaurants typically COMPOUND service charge (10%) and GST (8%) instead of simply adding them up
  2. I understand the 50c thing, but the bottled water thing is just ridiculous and is clearly a money grab. Imo from a business standpoint, restaurants should just price tap water into their menu, so it’ll be a nice surprise when the service staff offers “would you like ice or warm water?”.
  3. It’s a manpower thing, they need to serve your free water in their own cup. After your meal, they have to keep and send for washing then dryin
You have the right to boycott, the restaurant have the right to charge you. No right or wrong, if you’re thirsty and don’t want to pay, head to the toilet and drink from the tap, it’s free.
  4. Dont like then dont go lor. Dont know why need to make a fuss out of things like that. Life not miserable meh
  5. Every restaurant has a certain estimated spend per pax. The servers are trained to upsell you a drink or a starter to hit that average spent if not the restaurant will ‘lose money’ for that table.
Having said that, that’s why cocktails, mocktails and other non alcoholic drinks are costly in a restaurant. Also why more upscale restaurant charges 12 dollars for a sparkling or still bottle of water. Its just water right?
So restaurants that charge for tap water, it is fair? The answer is yes. Someone has to bottle the water, put it in the fridge, ice isn’t free BTW, and warm or hot water needs electricity to product. So there’s work and effort there.
Also most restaurant when you say tap water. It comes from a filtered tap, a bit like the wells system that is quite popular now. The commercial version is 10k and above.

GUY SAYS S’PORE WOMEN NO NEED NS, IF GO JAIL NO CANING, STILL COMPLAIN ABOUT “GENDER EQUALITY”

0

Why do Singaporean women complain about gender equality

I hv a seen a few videos in Tik Tok and other subreddits and etc, where SG woman complain about gender inequality and discrimination of woman in SG.

The topic of Gender inequality always revolves around woman even outside of the internet.

Yeah it’s great being a man compared to woman is in SG, the fact that as a man u hv to be treated like a mule for two years by NS.

The woman’s charter in Singapore, and prenups not being enforceable basically makes marriage a blind man’s gamble for men.

Spousal maintenance can be given to a woman for whatever reason, a man can only ask for spousal maintenance if he is basically handicapped and even that isn’t definite.

Man also have the privilege of enjoying of corporal punishment, men and boys can be canned in prison or school, but not woman or girls. Girls punishment in schools is that they get talked to

Woman in SG also have woman specific protection laws, and woman in SG or woman in general get less sentencing and might not even get indicted as opposed to their male counterpart .

Oh the horror and misery of being a woman…

There are more ways Singaporean men are “privileged”, but I won’t make this a 1000 word essay. Singaporean woman complaining how hard it is to be a woman just makes them seem like a spoiled whinny child.

Netizens’ comments

  1. Privilege is often invisible to those who have it. Just like how people in first world countries complain more than those in third world countries even though they are more privileged.
  2. No idea. But I hate it when there are scholarships and events that are *women-only*.
I understand the need for feminism in third world countries ( India , Middle east ) but not in Singapore. Reason being , women in this country have 2 years of advantage over men , but yet women complain about wage/salary gap.
I rather have a society where everyone is measured based on your competence and not your gender/race/religion.
  3. Make them serve ns since they want equality so much

HUSBAND SMASHES WIFE’S LAPTOP AGAINST THE WALL JUST BECAUSE SHE FORGOT TO CHARGE HIS

0

My husband broke my laptop because I failed to charge his

This was last night. I’m still a little anxious over it.

My husband texted me before he left work. He told me to charge his MacBook because he has things to work on later.

To my knowledge I did plug it in but obviously I wasn’t careful enough and it must have not been in fully. I should have made sure it was working. Something was not right in my mind.

After dinner he went to work. When he called my name I realized it hadn’t been charging. I apologized to him. I can’t remember the last time he was angry with me. He was calm but I could somehow feel his anger.

My MacBook was on our bed. He picked it up and threw it at the wall. It was so hard, I was startled. He asked, “do you like that? I’m not buying you a new one”. I started to tear up and he told me to leave our room. He said “I’m working, don’t disturb me”. I had to pull myself together so I wouldn’t upset our son.

Later I tried to smooth things out. I made my son a snack and texted my husband to see if wanted anything. He said yes and I brought him a plate and a drink.

He thanked me. He said “this was not like you. Your head was not on straight”. I didn’t really say anything back. I was anxious and just wanted to move on.

I was upset about his reaction but I keep my thoughts to myself. At the same time I feel like I deserved it.

It was a stressful evening. I usually keep things calm. My laptop is defiantly broken and I’m sad about that, but I think he will replace it despite what he said.

NEW DOUBLE WHITE LINES @ WOODLANDS CHECKPOINT, $150 FINE & 4 DEMERIT POINTS FOR CUTTING THEM

0

The Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) sai that they have introduced continuous double white lines along the viaduct leading towards the Woodlands Checkpoint.

They worked with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to address the problem of drivers using the motorcycle lane to cut queues of other cars, and have also installed enforcement cameras to make sure drivers follow the rules.

Drivers who cross the lines and use the motorcycle lane to cut queues will be fined $150 and received 4 demerit points.

ICA’s statement

CONTINUOUS DOUBLE WHITE LINES ALONG VIADUCT LEADING TO WOODLANDS CHECKPOINT

ICA has observed drivers using the motorcycle lane to cut the queue of cars waiting along the viaduct to enter Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration clearance. Such inconsiderate acts add on to the congestion at the checkpoint and consequently increase travel time for travellers.

To address this issue, ICA collaborated with the Land Transport Authority to demarcate the two lanes at the viaduct with continuous Double White Lines (DWL). With the DWL, it would be a traffic violation for cars to cross these lines (i.e. use the motorcycle lane and then queue cut to the car lane). Enforcement cameras have been installed along the viaduct to identify cars that have violated traffic rules. Violators will be liable to a composition fine of $150/- and four demerit points.

With heavy traffic expected in the lead-up to and during the upcoming Qing Ming festival and the Good Friday long weekend, motorists are reminded to follow traffic rules, maintain lane discipline and comply with checkpoint officers’ instructions.

Previous statement on road works

Lane closure along viaduct leading to Woodlands Checkpoint

One out of the two lanes along the viaduct leading into the departure zones of Woodlands Checkpoint will be closed for road marking works.

The lane will be closed from 3 Apr to 5 Apr, between 9:30am and 4:30pm. During the closure, cars can still access the viaduct via the motorcycle lane or through Woodlands Crossing, using exit 10B of the BKE.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving through the viaduct. Please follow ICA’s Facebook page for updates.

MAN FORCED TO PAY $1.7K AFTER HIS CHILD SPLASHED NAIL POLISH @ LEVI’S STORE ITEMS

Malaysian singer Shah Indrawan found himself in a tricky predicament after his daughter splashed nail polish on some clothes at a Levi’s outlet in Kuala Lumpur.

He ended up having to pay about RM 5,593 (or SGD $1,689.88) for the damaged items.

He shared about the incident on his Instagram, saying that he was with his family at the mall to break their fast, before stopping by the clothes shop at about 9.30 pm.

Unknown to him and his wife, their daughter went around the store and caused RM 5.6k worth of damages to the items, and by the time he realised what she had done, it was too late.

He said that he understood the store’s rules and he had to buy the items because they were damaged.

He lamented about the prices of the damaged items, with his daughter splattering nail police on 4 pairs of jeans worth about RM 1,299 each (SGD $392.48), two shirts worth RM499 each (SGD $150.77) and another top worth RM899 (SGD $271.63).

The total amount of damaged items came up to about RM7,093, although the store did give him a slight discount.

He shared that he would be reselling the clothes that he was “forced” to buy because they were not his size, and he sought support from his followers to buy the stained clothes at cheaper prices.

He is selling each pair of the jeans at RM800 each, as well as between RM299 to RM399 for the two shirts.

His netizens shared his pain and commended him for his calm demeanor during the whole incident, with others offering to buy the clothes from the singer.

Another netizen remarked that if Shah autographed the jeans and asked some of his other celebrity friends to sign it, it would become a limited edition item and he could potentially make his money back.

BUKIT BATOK FIRE THAT KILLED 60 Y.O AH MA, “LIKELY CAUSED” BY CIGARETTE FIRE

0

A 60-year-old woman was previously reported to have been killed by smoke inhalation following a fire that broke out at a flat in Bukit Batok back in 2019.

Yesterday (4 April) was the first day of the inquiry into the deceased, Madam Goh Seow Whay’s death.

Likely to have been caused by a cigarette fire

The Straits Times reported that Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Zameer Khan, a police investigation officer, testified in court that the fire was likely to have been caused by cigarette embers that could have ignited items (cardboard pieces and plastic bags) that the deceased hoarded outside her flat on the 13th floor of Block 210A Bukit Batok Street 21.

He added that the fire then spread into her flat, which was cluttered, and burned the items inside in the early hours of 1 November 2019.

The deceased’s son, 30-year-old Maverick Chia, told the investigators that he was a smoker, but he always put out his cigarettes with an ashtray.

Escaped through the kitchen window

At the time of the fire, Chia was with her late mother and her boyfriend; 81-year-old Ho Swee Lum, inside the flat when the fire broke out.

The two men escaped by climbing out of the kitchen window and standing on a ledge before being rescued, but the deceased remained inside the flat because she had collapsed inside the toilet.

Their neighbours were awakened by a burning smell at about 4.30 am and the authorities were then alerted, with firefighters putting out the fire at about 5.15 am.

The three of them were sent to Singapore General Hospital conscious, but Madam Goh subsequently died on 9 December.

Fire hose reel cabinet was locked and couldn’t be accessed

Investigators interviewed the deceased’s neighbours and were told that nobody was smoking in the corridors before the fire, and no cigarette butts were found after the fire; although the court did hear that the fire could have destroyed the cigarette butt(s), if any.

ASP Khan also added that no foul play was suspected, and the deceased’s family had not been targeted by anyone linked to loan sharks.

When the fire broke out, the neighbours had tried to access a fire hose reel near the burning unit but found the cabinet (where the hose was) was padlocked, other similar cabinets in the block were also locked.

SCDF officers later arrived at the scene and managed to access the hose by cutting the padlock, but no water came out of the hose when one of the firefighters turned on a valve that was linked to the hose.

They then used their hoses and water from another dry riser nearby to extinguish the fire.

Town council staff messed up

ASP Khan also testified that two staff members from the Jurong-Clementi Town Council (JCTC) had agreed to lock the cabinets to prevent vandalism.

SCDF Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Ho testified that fire hose reels should be accessible at all times and should not be obstructed and that notices were sent to JCTC to not lock the cabinets.

The two staff members who locked the cabinets were then issued stern warnings.

Technician forgot to set pump switch to auto, resulting in no water in hose

The court also heard that water didn’t flow into the fire hose reel because the pump selector in the pump room on the rooftop of the HDB block was set to manual instead of auto.

In manual mode, somebody must be present in the pump room to press a button to allow the water to flow through the fire hose; but in auto mode, water would be automatically dispensed when the valve is open.

A technician, who performed a maintenance check in October 2019, had apparently failed to make sure that the selector switch was set to auto.

The technician, then-51-year-old Malaiyappan Mayalagu, was fined $2,700 in September 2022 after pleading guilty to offences, including a negligent act that endangered human life.

He was a technician with J. Keart Alliances, which was hired by JCTC to perform fire protection system work.

JCTC has since installed a buzzer at the fire control panel, which will send alerts to the workers if they forget to turn the switch back to auto.

State coroner AdamNakhoda is expected to deliver his findings at a later date.

124 PERSONS INVESTIGATED IN LATEST BLITZ AGAINST UNLICENSED MONEYLENDING ACTIVITIES

The Police are investigating 124 persons, aged between 17 and 78, for their suspected involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities.

During a one-week anti-unlicensed moneylending operation conducted between 27 and 31 March 2023, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the seven Police land divisions conducted simultaneous raids island-wide.

Preliminary investigations revealed that 10 persons had allegedly conducted harassment at debtors’ residences, 49 persons were believed to be runners who had assisted in unlicensed moneylending businesses by carrying out Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transfers, and one person had allegedly provided false contact information to the unlicensed moneylender.

The remaining 64 persons are believed to have opened bank accounts and provided their ATM cards, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and/or Internet Banking tokens to unlicensed moneylenders to facilitate their unlicensed moneylending businesses.

Investigations against all the persons are ongoing.

Under the Moneylenders Act 2008:

  1. The offence of carrying on or assisting in a business of unlicensed moneylending carries an imprisonment term of up to four years, a fine between $30,000 and $300,000, and caning of up to six strokes.
  2. The offence of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment carries an imprisonment term of up to five years, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and caning between three and six strokes.
  3. The offence of providing false contact information to obtain loans from unlicensed moneylenders carries an imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months.

The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action against those involved in the unlicensed moneylending business, regardless of their roles, and ensure that they face the full brunt of the law. This includes taking action against those who open or give away their bank accounts to aid unlicensed moneylenders.

Unlicensed moneylenders are increasingly using text messaging or online platforms to send unsolicited loan advertisements. Members of the public are reminded not to reply or respond to such advertisements and to report these messages as spam.

Members of the public are also advised to stay away from unlicensed moneylenders and not to work with or assist them in any way. Members of the public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in unlicensed moneylending activities.

S’PORE POLICE NSF TRIED TO GET FREE SERVICE FROM PROSTITUTE WITH HIS POLICE ID

0

20-year-old Fahd Siddiqui, a full-time national serviceman (NSF) with the Singapore Police Force, had tried to obtain free explicit services from a social escort by flashing his warrant ward, according to The Straits Times.

He pleaded guilty on 4 April to attempting to obtain gratification in the form of obscene services from the social escort.

At the time of his offence, he was deployed as a ground response force officer at Orchard Neighbourhood Police Centre and was off-duty at the time of his offence.

What happened?

On 1 November 2022, Fahd responded to a number that was posted on the classifieds website Locanto, enquiring about a social escort’s services.

She told him that she charges $400 for her services and that she was staying at Robertson Quay Hotel in Merbau Road, Fahd then went to her hotel room later that night at about 9 pm.

Upon seeing the woman, Fahd told her that she was not the same person as the photo in her advertisement, and said that he wasn’t interested before leaving the room.

However, he later returned and showed the woman his police warrant card, identifying himself as a police officer and telling her that he would report her to the police unless they could come to some form of arrangement.

The woman understood what he said to mean that if she provided him with free explicit services, he wouldn’t report her to the police.

She then started crying and said that she just arrived in Singapore, and Fahd then left her hotel room shortly after.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) later received information about Fahd’s offences on 6 November 2022, and he was subsequently charged on 24 November later that month.

However, it was not revealed how his offences came to light.

The Singapore Police Force also said that Fahd was subsequently removed from his duties on the front lines after his offences.

Fahd is expected to be sentenced on 16 May, after the court called for reports to assess his suitability for probation and reformative training.

LIVERPOOL FC COMING BACK TO S’PORE IN JULY FOR PRE-SEASON 2ND YEAR IN A ROW

0

English Premier League side Liverpool FC will be coming to Singapore again this year for a pre-season friendly tournament in July.

Liverpool fans in Singapore can expect to see fan favourites such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Jordan Henderson in action at the Singapore National Stadium.

The Liverpool team was previously in Singapore last year for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy where they beat Crystal Palace 2-0, with goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah claiming a victory and lifting the pre-season trophy.

More than 50,000 fans attended the match, with thousands also turning up in droves to watch their training sessions despite the then-pandemic restrictions at the time.

According to The Straits Times, Liverpool was rumoured to be touring Las Vegas in the United States originally but is now coming back to Singapore instead.

Among the other teams rumoured to join Liverpool in Singapore are their fellow English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur, German champions Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Tottenham, the laughing stock of European football, announced their pre-season tour in Perth against Premier League side West Ham on 18 July, and are looking to add two more stops in Asia as well, with Singapore being rumoured to be one of the countries.

Bayern Munich toured the US last year, but they have an office based in Thailand and could possibly visit either Singapore or Japan for their pre-season.

Football Insider confirmed the team’s pre-season in Singapore, which is their only destination for their Asian tour this year.

However, it is not yet revealed who they will be playing though, and the club has yet to make any official announcements about their Singapore visit yet.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp previously mentioned that he would prefer to visit Asia in the third week of their pre-season because he wants to work of his team’s fitness in the first week closer to home, before heading overseas in the third week.
