GUY ASKS WHY ARE S’POREANS SO “CYNICAL & BITTER” BECAUSE NOBODY PRAISE HIM FOR HIS ART

0

Why are most Singaporeans cynical and bitter?

23M Singaporean aspiring artist here.

For the majority of my schooling days, I’ve always been somewhat of a social outcast in terms of my passion and ambitions, with exception of a few teachers and friends who have been very encouraging and supportive.

I initially thought it might be the fact that kids can be harsh and narrow-minded due to the lack of exposure.

But as it turns out, I’ve come to realise that this problem is not limited to students but also adults. I find that with unconventional endeavours, Singaporeans generally (in my experience) tend to be really cynical, like they try to talk me out of it or they end up humblebragging about their own paths and fitting in to the norm.

And even when I make progress and achieve little successes, people here tend to be quite critical of how things can be, instead of seeing what got me here in the first place and what potentially lies ahead.

I don’t know why exactly, maybe it’s the herd mentality or the overly-competitive nature. I don’t understand why most Singaporeans find it a need to have opinions on something they have no idea or prior experience things with, and how they intentionally/unintentionally discourage people with the things they say rather than to be truly happy for people enjoying what they do and making progress, whether mainstream or not.

Why is it so difficult for people here to be happy for others and to embrace individualism?

Or worse, invalidate their work and to get them to prove that it’s worthy?

Netizens’ comments

Big city problems. We are raised in an environment where your entire worth as a human being in measured in material wealth and social status. As a guy growing up, no matter be it school, NS, work, it all revolves to a few things people almost immediately size you up with: Do you have a car? Do you have a girlfriend/wife? Do you have active social life? Do you have your own house? How much are you earning a month?

Rarely do people instead focus on what you like, what you find fun in doing. Because the only thing that matters to them, is how to size you up in relation to themselves so that they can find a way to prove they are ‘better’ than you.

We are in a competitive society that also values face a lot, so people have a need to justify themselves and present as a worthwhile person to others. Obviously, they do it the wrong way, since they think worth is determined in things like salary etc. “If you do not think of hustling your way to the top you must lack ambition and are a boring individual/ lazy.” is a very common phrase.

Individualism doesn’t matter, its all about rank and standing in their social circles. It is not just a Singapore thing. Go to any major city where the economy is developed enough to enable competitive workforces. I’m sure you have heard countless stories of Korea’s discrimination and bullying if you don’t present yourself as the upper class. Japan, China etc.. Its all the same. When we are put in large social circles in a stressful city environment, our societies develop an emphasis on pushing others down so you stand out more.

In order to cultivate a society that values individualism and appreciation of the arts, it takes a lot of effort. You need to change the societal stigmas and mindset. Culture, etc.

When people invalidate your work and life choices, its almost always because they feel that you work far less hard than them in their opinion, and they need to justify their own efforts. They also do not like to acknowledge that their worldview is not the best view.

I’m 26, just fresh grad from uni and drawing 3.4k monthly, and the amount of scrutiny and laughs from my peers who earn 4-6k asking me why I lack to ambition to topple people over and take higher paying salaries can be irritating. But you do you. Don’t be disheartened. There are still plenty of genuine people out there, its just that the loud ones are always the a-holes.

HUSBAND HIRES PROSTITUTE, ANGRY WHEN HE FINDS OUT IT’S HIS WIFE, THEN ASSAULTS HER

A man in Shanxi, China; Mr Zhang, returned to his hometown for the Chinese New Year and decided to solicit a prostitute, who turned out to be his wife.

According to Sing Tao News Corporation (STNN), Zhang had left his hometown to work for many years, with his wife staying behind to look after their child who goes to school in the area.

Zhang only returns home during the Chinese New Year, and sometimes his wife and child would visit him during the summer holidays.

Earlier this year, Zhang was on his way back to his hometown with a train ticket in hand, but he reached the train station at about midnight.

He decided to stay at a nearby hotel and return home in the morning, and in his hotel room, he noticed small cards being slid into his room from under the door.

The cards were advertising prostitutes and he then called one of the women on the card, who then arrived at his room shortly after.

Zhang couldn’t identify her at first because she was covered up, wearing a large padded jacket and face mask because it was still winter at the time.

However, the woman seemed to recognise him and immediately tried to leave.

Zhang saw that the woman’s figure looked similar to his wife’s and he removed her face mask by force and was shocked to see that it was indeed his wife.

He then got angry at her for being a prostitute and started assaulting her, with the ensuing commotion alerting the other hotel guest, who notified the staff of the hotel.

Zhang was then restrained before the authorities came and took him and his prostitute wife back to the police station.

He was given 8 days in detention and fined 400 yuan (or SGD$77.54), while his wife was given 3 days of detention and fined 200 yuan (or SGD$38.77).

EXPLOSION SOUNDS & BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM BISHAN MANHOLE, SCDF EVACUATES 30 RESIDENTS

A manhole in Bishan was emitting black smoke and sounds of explosions, resulting in 30 residents in the vicinity being evacuated by the Singapore Civil Defence Force as a precaution, according to Lianhe Zaobao.

The SCDF received a call for help on 22 February near a manhole in Bishan, and when officers arrived at the site, they found burn marks inside the manhole but there wasn’t a fire.

30 residents were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The SCDF said that they received a call for help on 22 February at about 11.20 am, at a manhole near 34 Binchang Rise.

Firefighters used a thermal imager after arriving at the scene and detected a heat signature coming from a manhole nearby.

They then opened the manhole cover but found no fire, however, they did find some burn marks on the insulation sleeves of some of the electrical cables.

About 30 residents were evacuated by the SCDF and the police as a safety precaution, and the SCDF’s Hazardous Materials Response Team were also deployed.

They pumped water into the manhole in a bid to cool it down, before checking for any presence of dangerous substances using a detector.

The immediate area was also cordoned off within a 100-metre radius before the authorities left the scene about 5 hours later.

One of the residents told the Chinese paper that his family heard loud explosion sounds at about 11.10 am and he left his home to check out what was happening.

He said that although the manhole cover didn’t fly out, black smoke kept emanating out of the sewer.

The SCDF is currently investigating the incident.

TAIWAN GIVING $200 EACH TO 500,000 TRAVELERS AS AN INCENTIVE TO HELP BOOST TOURISM

0

Taiwan will be giving international travellers who visit them NT $5,000 (or SGD$200) as an incentive as the government attempts to boost their tourism sector.

The Taiwanese Minister of Transportation and Communications, Wang Kwo-tsai announced on 22 February that 500,000 lucky travellers will benefit from their NT$5.3 billion package set aside by the government to boost tourism, according to TVBS news.

They are hoping to attract 6 million tourists annually since lifting their border restrictions and is part of Taiwan’s NT$380 billion post-pandemic stimulus bill that was passed on 21 February.

Aside from the $200 that the travellers will be receiving, travel agencies can also expect to get SGD$440 ot SGD$880 in subsidies for every tour group that they bring into the country.

Taiwanese media outlets, however, have been saying different things about the form of payment due to the lack of information at present.

Taipei Times reported that international travellers will be getting NT$5,000 in vouchers instead, while Taiwan News reported that the sum will be paid out in cash.

Bloomberg, on the other hand, reported that the money might be paid as accommodation discounts or via electronic means.

Not much information has also been released on how foreign travellers can qualify or be chosen for the incentives.

More information will be released at a later date.

DRIVER REPORTS HIT & RUN TO THE POLICE BUT TURNS OUT HE WAS THE HIT & RUN DRIVER

0

TikTok user @eunicecatx shared how she received a message from her friend, saying that he was a victim of a hit-and-run accident and was at the police station reporting it to the police.

He sent her some photos of his car’s front bumper, looking scratched as a result of the alleged hit-and-run accident.

Eunice then received a photo of the police report that was filed by the driver at Orchard Neighbourhood Police Centre.

The police reviewed the man’s dashcam footage in a bid to find the hit-and-run driver, but upon reviewing the footage, it seems the driver himself was the one who scratched his own car.

He had grazed the wall at the carpark while driving up the ramp, grazing it not once but twice.

Amused by the incident. the police reportedly told the man to watch his own dashcam and that he can find the driver responsible when he gets home.

The netizen said that her friend had checked the dashcam footage before making the police report, but only checked the part of the video after he parted with his car. He had wrongly assumed that the car was hit after it had been parked.

The driver was “shocked” when he found out that he was the one responsible for his car’s scratches, thinking that he had run over the curb.

@eunicecatx He reported himself to the police during Christmas 🤣 #fyp #funnyvideos #hitandrun #humor ♬ Oh No – Kreepa

WOMAN GAINS 20KG AFTER GETTING ATTACHED, BF NOW DON’T WANT TOUCH HER

0

I’m 25 years old. I always had an active lifestyle, so I was never overweight. But this all changed when I got into my first serious relationship.

At first, I was really happy that I had finally found someone to share my life with. We had been together for a few months and things were going really well. We would go out for dinner and spend time together, so I never really had time to exercise.

Unfortunately, this all changed after we got attached. I started to put on a lot of weight, and before I knew it, I had gained close to 20kg. This didn’t bother me too much, I was still happy and in love. But my boyfriend was a different story.

He started to act differently around me and didn’t want to touch me anymore. He would make jokes about my weight, and he made me feel like I wasn’t good enough for him anymore. I tried to talk to him about it, but he wouldn’t listen.

I was devastated and I couldn’t understand why he was treating me like this. I was the same person he fell in love with, and I was still the same person inside. But now, he was acting like I was a completely different person.

I tried my best to get him to see that I was still the same person, but nothing worked. He was determined to make me feel like I was too fat for him. I was so hurt and embarrassed that I started to hide away from him.

I stopped going out with him and started to stay home more. I stopped seeing my friends and I stopped doing the things I enjoyed and I was so depressed.

My weight kept increasing and I kept feeling worse and worse. I didn’t understand why he was so cruel to me, and I felt like I had no one to turn to. I was slowly losing my self-confidence, and I was so close to giving up.

But then I realized that the only person who could make me feel better was myself. I started to take care of myself and I started to do things that made me happy. I tried to focus on the positive things in my life, and I slowly began to accept myself for who I am.

I stopped worrying about what my boyfriend thought of me, and I started to love myself for who I am. I started to exercise and eat healthily, and I eventually lost the 20kg I had gained.

MAN WHO STOLE MILK POWDER TINS FROM NTUC & RESOLD THEM ONLINE, JAILED 3 WEEKS

0

34-year-old Chen Yixian Joshua pleaded guilty to 2 charges of theft and was sentenced to 3 weeks imprisonment on 23 February.

He had stolen 8 milk powder tins from an NTUC FairPrice outlet in Punggol and some Toys from a Toys “R” Us outlet back in June 2022, and confessed to wanting to resell them to make a profit when he was caught red-handed by a security guard, according to Channel NewsAsia.

The incident happened on 22 June 2022, when Chen went to the NTUC FairPrice outlet at Waterway Point to steal 8 tins of the 900 grams Enfagrow Pro A+ Stage 3 milk powder, with the total worth of the loot being $422.40.

He hid behind a pillar to hide the milk tins into a bag that he brought along with him and exited the supermarket but was caught in the act by a security guard.

Chen was then detained and brought to the security office where they uncovered the stolen products, as well as toys with the Toys “R” Us labels on them, worth about $213.94.

He was subsequently arrested by the police and confessed to wanting to resell the goods for a profit.

The police’s further investigations revealed that Chen had gone to the toy store earlier that night to steal toys, which he said were for his children.

Results in FairPrice locking up baby milk powder

Twitter user Shawn Lim, shared on his Twitter page about how FairPrice has started locking up baby milk powder because of thefts.

Lim tweeted: “FairPrice has started locking up baby milk powder because apparently they are being stolen. Breaks my heart that there people out there struggling to feed their babies”

He accompanied his tweet with a photo of the rows of baby milk powders being locked behind a transparent glass.

A spokesperson for FairPrice said that this is part of a new initiative at their Bukit Batok MRT outlet, in a bid to prevent shoplifting.

The spokesperson added that the baby milk powders and other similar products are among the items that are typically shoplifted.

MP Murali Pillai responds to milk powder being locked

It was previously reported that at least two NTUC FairPrice outlets have started locking up their baby milk powders behind barriers as part of efforts to prevent shoplifting.

Bukit Batok SMC MP Murali Pillai, made a clarification on Facebook Live, after being “concerned” that the situation was being misread by the public.

Murali was seen in the Facebook live video with an employee of the supermarket, and clarified that the anti-theft measures were meant to deter thieves who resell the stolen products.

He said that some netizens were under the impression that the measures had targetted those who are not able to afford baby milk powders, and confirmed that this was not the case.

He reiterated his point that FairPrice is concerned about people who steal with the view of making a profit, meaning selling and making a profit.
