S’PORE WOMAN RACKED UP $618 PHONE BILL OVERSEAS AFTER CALLING BOOKING.COM FOR HELP

0

Facebook user Ng Shei Kee, shared that she went to New Zealand for a holiday and booked a hotel reservation via Booking.com.

However, upon reaching the hotel, she found out that there was no booking made in her name and ended up trying to find a hotel at the last minute, fearing that she might end up sleeping in the streets.

The hotel was kind enough to provide them with one night of accommodation while they sorted out their accommodation issues.

She added that she eventually managed to find accommodation for the next two days, and alleged that Booking.com had agreed to compensate her for her additional hotel costs.

However, Booking.com allegedly refused to pay her mobile’s international roaming charges of $588 that she racked up while calling for help.

Here is what she said

Booking.com has really gone to the next level in their horrendous service rendered. We had made a booking for our trip that commended on 30th August 2022 and was due to last for 11 nights. Prior to our check-in date, we have been constantly receiving email reminders from Booking.com on a weekly basis that our trip is near, even up to 1 day before our check in date.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were then presented with the news that there was no booking in our name that had been made from Booking.com as the hotel had no longer worked with them. Booking.com did not even provide us with that information.

We were dumbfounded by this and had to actually clarify with the assistant once again, along with trying to figure out how on earth we were able to find a hotel at the 13th hour within our allocated budget.

Fortunately, the staff at the hotel was nice enough to provide 1 night of accommodation for us. They left us to our own devices, while they sorted out the issue with booking.com. The hotel then sent an email to us (because it’s near to their knock off time where they are about to end work) explaining that they had contacted Booking.com and also left the contact number for us to call so that they can assist us on our bookings (email correspondence as attached).

This number was located internationally, and we attempted to make contact with them immediately for fear of having to sleep on the streets of New Zealand. Alas, after 2 hours of being placed on hold and pushed around between the different departments, we were then informed that they couldn’t assist us and had instead sought to proceed with a refund.

While they tried to provide us with different hotel options, many of them were hours away from where we needed to be, or the prices were eye-watering and exorbitant. Throughout the call, we were frequently being placed on hold for long periods of time, and when we suggested that they give us a call back when they have updates to save on the cost, they refused.

In the end, they shared that they could not resolve and clear up the mess they caused and stated that we were on our own… We then frantically tried our best to search for an alternative accommodation or else we were really running the risk of sleeping with the stars over our head in the winter climate of Auckland.
With a stroke of luck after all the bad fortune, we were able to secure a roof over our head for the next 2-3 nights.

Once we settled down, we then went to lodge a complain with booking.com. They had assisted us (albeit taking 4-5 days of their time) to book another hotel and compensated us on the hotel difference. However, they had refused to compensate us on the international call bill that we had incurred to contact them to seek their assistance for the crap that they had put us in.

If the bill was along the lines of SGD 100-200 bucks or maybe even abit more, we would have just swallowed it and moved on and blamed our misfortune to ever choose Booking.com. However, the bill amassed to a staggering and eye-watering SGD 588 (phone bill as attached)!!
When we seeked an explanation from them on this, they lamented that they have already compensated us on the hotel differences and hence they could not process the phone bill which was caused by them messing up the booking at the hotel we booked in the first place.

If booking.com had not dropped the ball on the hotel booking, none of this would have happened, and there was no need to incur any of this added expenses at all.

Imagine spending 10 hours on an airplane, alighting in New Zealand all tired and dazed to have a rude shock that your hotel does not have a room for you because Booking.com had screwed up..

This is one of the worst experiences that a traveller can go through!

And now, Booking.com has made the decision to ignore our email for compensation and to just sweep it under the rug, and literally told us to “Suck it up”.

Maybe SGD 588 does not mean much to this platform, but it is a good chunk of my paycheck for just a phone call.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I am able to seek recourse on this as Booking.com seem to have left me in the lurch..

Thank you in advance!

Booking.com responds

Booking.com spoke to AsiaOne and said that Ng had contacted a third-party accommodation partner.

They added that they have since reached out to the customer to clarify the situation and apologised for the distress caused to her.

They further added that customers are advised to visit their help centre on the website or through the local numbers on their booking confirmation.

CAROUSELL LAYS OFF 110 EMPLOYEES, WHO WILL EACH GET 3 MONTHS SALARY AS COMPENSATION

0

Carousell reportedly laid off about 110 of their employees, cutting off 10% of their total headcount, according to The Straits Times.

Quek Siu Rui, the CEO and co-founder of the company, announced the news to the company on 1 December, apologising for the decision.

The company also added that the workers who are retrenched will be receiving a minimum of 3 months’ salary as compensation, along with other measures.

ST reported that the retrenchment comes amidst the slow growth of the company.

Quek purportedly said that this move will only affect some business units, but stopped short of mentioning the number of workers in Singapore that were retrenched, according to his letter to his employees.

Employees who were retrenched reportedly received the news via an email, where they were invited to a meeting with their team leader and an HR business partner.

On top of the three months’ salary compensation, the retrenched workers will also get cash in lieu for their remaining paid time off, and their medical benefits will also be extended until 30 June next year.

Quek reportedly told his employees, “I am deeply sorry for this outcome, and I take responsibility for the decisions that have led us here.”

He said that he made several critical mistakes, with one of them being too optimistic about the company’s impact on their increase in investments.

He added that they were too quick to grow their expenses and hire, but the returns took longer than expected and that he had underestimated the impact of growing the team size too quickly.

2 On 21 Jan 2021, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), conducted an operation and seized approximately 30kg of pig blood curd from Yuan’s residential unit. Our investigation revealed that Yuan had been selling pig blood products online.

POLICE REPORT FILED AGAINST MAN WHO DELIBERATELY DELAY MRT FROM MOVING OFF

A video that went viral for Tiktok became a Police case after a man deliberately stopped the MRT just to create a video.

He placed his hand in between the doors just to stop it from moving off and calls it a “life hack”.

Police Report

According to the Singapore Police Force, a police report has been made against the man.

A TikTok user by name of Wangan Bryan posted a video on TikTok on 1st December stating:

“If you’re confident enough, please do!! Ig: wanganbryans // #WanganBryan”

He used his hand to get trapped between the closing doors so that the train will be forced to reopen.

However, what he did is not only dangerous and irresponsible. For shooting this video he delayed the whole train of passengers.

Video of incident: Here

Here are what netizens think:

  • Of course, “help” people to board the train but end up have to wait inside the train because you caused a delay which equals to the waiting time for the next train. Come I clap for you
  • Great, now everyone will be extra late if add 10 seconds every station
  • Life hack: How to meet god earlier
  • Now I know why there is announcement time to time that the train at station ahead has “issue”
  • Once the doors are closed.. the Train captain(TC) will get a green light noti which indicates alll doors are properly closed and locked! If not, The system will give TC a alert that one of the doors are not *PROPERLY CLOSED* hence he will open again in “less than 10 seconds” and he will wait again for 20-30 seconds to close door… Resulting: a Train delay about 30-45 seconds delay AND THIS WILL MAKE DELAY to behind trains upto 3 minutes.
  • 2 possible outcomes: hand gone or helped him and others board the train. Glad it’s the 2nd
  • Do not do this, saw it happen on other line and there is 1 or 2 min delay, everybody keep staring at that guy

MAN BRINGS HIS PET FISH OUT FOR A WALK WITH A “FISH STROLLER” THAT HE INVENTED

0

A man in Taichung, Taiwan, took his pet fishes out for a walk with a “fish stroller” that he invented.

The fish stroller is made from acrylic that is filled with water and set in the middle of the wheeled unit, and it gives his goldfishes a 360-degree view of the world on dry land.

It also has a battery operated filtration and oxygen system with LED lighting, and the whole contraption took him weeks to design and build, setting him back about US$300 to US$400.

The man, Jerry Huang, said:

“We all have this urge to explore other uninhabitable exotic worlds, that’s why we send spaceships to the universe.

If I were a goldfish, I would definitely be super thrilled if someone invented something for me to go and explore other worlds.

It’s not a spur of the moment thing. You need to understand the fish.

GIRL BECAME CLOSE FRIENDS WITH HER EX-TEACHER, GOES OUT FOR DINNERS & HUG EACH OTHER

0

I’m close friends with my former teacher and I don’t know what to think about it.

Long story short, I’m (19F) close friends with a former teacher (30sM) of mine. He was my teacher during the last year of school and even back then we got along well and had a closer relationship than a normal student-teacher one, but since I graduated, we’ve become really really close.

We now hang out every single week, do stuff together, go to lunch/dinner/coffee (and he always wants to pay for me), sometimes text for an hour or so in the evening (we just randomly chat about whatever, never about something even remotely inappropriate), he has driven me in his car or on his motorbike a few times, we got each other birthday presents etc.

It’s also clear that we deeply care about each other, he’s super sweet and kind to me and viceversa, he knows “everything” about me and I about him, we have inside jokes, we often hug etc.

I know how it may sound, but he has never crossed any line and never acted inappropriate even just once. He’s super respectful and I think he sees me as a sort of daughter/younger sister figure. And I’ve never crossed a line either.

I know it can happen that students and teachers stay in contact after graduation, but I’m also aware that this isn’t the usual “get coffee once every two years to catch up and see how life’s going” type of thing, so I’m a bit confused about it all. So I’d like to receive some feedback from you please.

Netizens’ comments

  • I wonder if he is “friends” like this with any male former students.
  • Thirty something year old men with their shit together don’t make a habit of hanging out with teenage girls who aren’t relatives of theirs.
  • Do you think he would be “friends” like this with a former male student? Come on.
  • No
