SOH RUI YONG WANTS TO REPRESENT S’PORE AGAIN, ISSUES ANOTHER PUBLIC APOLOGY TO SNOC

0

Infamous Singapore marathon runner Soh Rui Yong, released a second public apology on 6 October to the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), and expressed his wish to race for Singapore again.

He previously issued an apology back in February after being snubbed from representing Singapore at the SEA Games.

Soh Rui Yong’s second apology

After a few years of disagreements with SNOC since April 2019, I wish to put the past behind, so that I can focus on my running and contributing in any way I can to Singapore sports. With this in mind I hereby unreservedly apologise to the SNOC for any past statements I may have made that had cast doubt on their propriety.

A particular example was a blog post in August asking if the SNOC were clowns. In hindsight, the use of the word “clowns” was unnecessary. I am sorry. The blog post has been taken down and I undertake not to use the term “clowns” on SNOC again.

As per SNOC’s request, I have taken down all my posts from April 2019 onwards that may be seen as disparaging to SNOC, and have written to third party publishers to request that they do likewise.

Singapore Athletics nominated me to represent Singapore at the SEA Games in 2019 and 2022, but these nominations were rejected by SNOC. I accept that SNOC had their reasons for doing so. I unreservedly apologise to the SNOC for any statements I may have made on these issues that may be construed as disparaging. I will not do so in the future. I hope to race for Singapore again if selected and fly the Singapore flag high.

Team Singapore is at our strongest when united. as seen in this photo. Let’s put our past differences aside and be united once more.

GUY’S RICH FATHER OFFERING HIM $10K/MTH TO WORK FOR HIM, ASKS IS IT “SHAMEFUL”

0

How do people perceive those who choose to work for their family businesses? Shameful?

My dad is offering me $10K a month to work for his distribution company and my best job offer is $4.5K at a bank. I’m a mathematics grad FCH.

I’ll be learning how to manage a company straightaway if I worked for my dad while if I got a job, I wouldn’t know what I will learn if I will learn anything at all. In addition, I will probably inherit the company in the future anyway. My dad is 68 and I am 25.

All my friends are getting jobs and they have the dignity of being able to tell people that they are out there trying to make it on their own without any help from their parents, and I will have none of that dignity, and I’ll probably be perceived as piggybacking on my family’s wealth.

I don’t know the right thing to do here. Please halp.

Netizens’ comments

  • No right or wrong answer. I think it’s great you’re considering learning from your dad to take over his business. Many don’t get this opportunity. I’d take it if I’m interested in running it in the future
  • it’s a blessing actually. now u still young, so is ur friends. later, they all admire u. Your direction is clearer than them. Key is you must enjoy. if not sure, tell ur dad. u wan to work outside for 2 yrs first. Just waste time only.
  • Decent job experience will give u bit confidence in managing ur family biz, especially with those “office politics” surrounding mgmt.

65 Y.O MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING TO RAPE POLICEWOMAN & INSULTING HER

0

65-year-old Kamis Abdul Rahim, was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment with an enhanced sentence of 85 days jail for breaching his remission order.

He had threatened to rape a policewoman and insulted her, and his previous offences include using criminal force on an auxiliary police officer, as well as using vulgarities on public servants.

He had pleaded guilty to three charges under the Protection from Harassment Act on 5 October, and has been in remand since 22 September.

What happened?

On 20 September, Kamis was spotted by three patrolling police officers lying on the floor on the 2nd floor of Orchard Towers, where he was bleeding from his head and smelling like alcohol.

The officers then approached him to provide assistance, and Kamis then got aggressive and lunched at the officers.

He was then pinned down to the floor after he continued to be rowdy and was warned to calm down, and he then called Sergeant Nurfasihah Syafiqah Abdul Samat a “wh*re”.

He also told the policewoman “I will rape you” in Malay, before being arrested.

Whilst en route to the Police Cantonment Complex inside the police car, Kamis told another police officer “I will kill you” and called them “stupid police”, as well as using Hokkien vulgarities on the officer.

While at the regional lock-up at the police station, Kamis told a trainee officer “I can kill you all” and used Hokkien vulgarities on them.

WORKER HIT BY LORRY WHILE FUMIGATING BUILDING, DRIVER COULDN’T SEE DUE TO SMOKE

A video emerged online showing a CCTV footage of a worker being hit by a lorry while he was fumigating a building at Woodlands.

The worker who works as an exterminator, Mohd Alem, shared footage of the incident onto Facebook on 4 October, captioning it in Malay “who is at fault here? I lose a vertebra because of this and almost died from surgery, according to the doctors”.

The incident purportedly happened on 19 August 2022, according to the timestamp on the video and showed the man in black surveying the premises before starting to fumigate the area.

Smoke was seen billowing from a drain near the gantry of the carpark, which then spread as a lorry approached the gantry.

The driver of the lorry then drove forward, and was not aware of the presence of the worker who was walking in the same direction in front of the lorry.

As the thick smoke billowed, the driver was not able to see the worker in front of him, and the lorry then hit the worker.

The victim was then sent flying sideways and fell onto the ground.

S’PORE TEACHER FIRED FOR NOT “PROACTIVELY” STOPPING STUDENTS FROM FIGHTING

0

A relief teacher in Singapore was purportedly dismissed after a fight happened at a class that she was teaching at a secondary school in the western side of Singapore.

Taking to Instagram, she lamented how her contract was terminated over a phone call, with the school being unhappy that she wasn’t “proactive” in stopping the fight and called her “unprofessional”.’

Here is what she said

Some of you all may know that I have a side hustle (apart from running my own biz) which is doing relief/ teaching (math/sci) at a particular sec sch. It has been a year there and generally, things were fine and I enjoyed teaching there. However, I would like to voice out and perhaps garner some opinions on this particular incident/case that happened recently.
(Disclaimer — The things I am going to point out is not to defame anyone, neither am I trying to sensationalise anything.)

Last Wednesday (21/9) — a minor fight broke out in a sec 1 class and i happen to be taking that class at that time. To be honest I was shocked, but thereafter I followed up (by reprimanding them, telling them to stop the fight, got the class-chair to report the incident to their form teacher, and went over to check and question the two students who were involved in the fight). The whole incident lasted less than 5 minutes, and the class was back to normal after.

The next day (22/9) — I received a call after school from the discipline mistress (shall call her Ms A). She said that she wanted to talk to me about that fighting incident. I told her exactly what happened. The response I got from her was:

  • I wasn’t doing anything (just because based on the CCTV, I happened to be seated down at the moment when they were fighting, and of course, CCTV couldn’t capture sound)
  • Because I wasn’t being “proactive” and “unprofessional”, they (the school leaders) decided to terminate my contract (she claimed that she had a discussion with the principal prior to this (which I later found out that the discussion wasn’t really in depth, as the HOD who hired me wasn’t fully aware of the situation at that point in time. Also, there is still no conclusion (or not that I am aware of) up till today).
  • Quoted from Ms A “It is also hard for them to explain to the parents”.

First of all, I did sincerely apologise on my end for not handling the situation the best possible way. However, is the school handling this situation in a fair and just matter right now? By dismissing their non full-time staff through a phone call, and also not nearing them out properly face to face.
Ever since last Thursday, I wasn’t even given a chance to meet the person in charge to talk or to explain myself. I requested for a meeting to iron things out since the day of the phone call. It has been a week and my simple request wasn’t granted. Yet it takes less than a day when it comes to following up and placating the parents.
This shows that the school is clearly capable of handling external matters efficiently, but choose to shun away the request of a temp staff. So to say, do temp staff do not have their rights? Do they not have their dignity?

As mentioned in point 2, the reason for dismissal was due to my response towards the situation (not proactive/unprofessional). To be fair, relief teachers (RTs) are not trained enough to handle such situations. There wasn’t any SOP given to us to start with.
Speaking of unprofessionalism, is dismissing someone with no solid reason (not forgetting via a phone call + not hearing the other party out in person) considered professional then? I may be wrong, but look at the big picture. Let’s just say the same incident happened and the class’ form teacher was at the scene instead, and if he/she handled the situation the same way as I did. Would they have gotten rid of their form teacher? I really doubt so.

From a third party’s point of view, the school is basically trying to find the easy way out. In other words, using me as the scapegoat so that it makes it less “hard for them to explain to the parents” (Quoted).
I assume that the school should already know what exactly caused that fight to break out, and did I cause that fight? No. Did I want the fight to happen? No. Such incident is beyond our control and therefore it is unfair to push the blame to one party.
If I wanted to be selfish, I could have told the chairperson not to report that incident. Why will I want to put my job in jeopardy? However, it seems like being honest isn’t enough to deserve a second chance.

At this point, it is not about the job/money that bugs me, but rather how things were mishandled. This can happen to not just me but anyone, which can be humiliating.
It is such an irony that the school/education system advocate so much on core values such as respect and empathy, and yet as school leaders/educators, they failed to walk the talk.

MAN’S PARCEL DIDN’T ARRIVE, DELIVERYMAN ALLEGEDLY LIED THAT NO ONE WAS HOME

0

Facebook user Ng Yi lee shared that his delivery parcel failed to arrive and that the delivery driver allegedly lied that nobody was home.

He claimed that the driver took a photo of his block’s 1st storey staircase instead of delivering the item to his unit.

Here is what he said

Singapore Post I have been using your SpeedPost service for a couple of times now. Most of them have been successful deliveries, but this time one of your deliveries have completely failed to reach me because one of your drivers lied saying that they couldn’t deliver because no one is at home! Like what the hell?

At that time I HAD someone at home but nobody came to my house to physically deliver my parcel from Lazada, and then according to Lazada’s app the driver just took a photo of the 1st storey staircase of my block instead of delivering the item to my house and then lied to me claiming that nobody was at home!

(If you can’t find the house just give me a call instead! Don’t just do nothing and claim that you cannot deliver the item just because of the driver not being able to find the address properly!)

Is this the crap that you teach to your drivers? Do you people not understand the meaning of fufilling deliveries on time? Or your drivers just don’t understand the meaning of calling the recipient of the item? Neither did I received a call from the driver at all before they delivered my item. And it’s even ridiculous since they don’t even care!

Whichever postman who did this to me should make a formal apology to me along with their supervisor in charge as well. (Please discipline that following driver for delivering that item of mine as well, and I also need a valid explanation from either the postman who delivered that parcel to me or to their supervisor in charge for explanations.

Because your customer service hasn’t explained to me at all in full valid reasons.) This is just a stern warning to SingPost because I have been really disappointed with their service yesterday, one more time if such cases like these happen again, I will probably stop using your service for delivery from now on.

My suggestions to improve your service:

STOP USING failed delivery notifications from now on and at least allow the parcels to be placed in safe places (like dry riser, shoe rack etc.)

Allow the recipient to collect their parcels at post office or POPStation from now on if they are not at home on that day.

At least do deliveries on Saturdays so that they will be much more successful instead of just delivery only on weekdays because this is the reason why SingPost registered deliveries for medium or larger parcels are not successful most of the time!

MASSACRE BY FORMER POLICEMAN AT THAI CHILDCARE CENTRE, AT LEAST 36 DEAD

0

A mass shooting took place at a childcare centre in northern Thailand on 6 October, with more than 30 people killed in the shocking attack.

The gunman has since been identified as a 34-year-old man who was a former police officer who was dismissed last year over drug allegations, according to CNA.

He was reportedly arrested while in possession of methamphetamine and was on triel for drugs, and hours before the mass shooting, he had been in court, according to the New York Times.

According to reports in Thailand, the 34-year-old reportedly fled the scene after the mass shooting and killed his wife and child, before killing himself.

A district official told Reuters that 30 children were in attendance at the childcare centre and most of them were asleep inside a locked room.

The gunman had reportedly picked up his child from the childcare centre during lunchtime after his court appearance.

He was reportedly unable to find his child and allegedly entered the centre, shooting 4 to 5 officials before forcing himself into the locked room where the children were sleeping.

He then slashed and killed the children with a knife, with the NYT reported that an 8-months pregnant teacher was stabbed in the attack, and the children were also struck in the head.

BBC reported that the death count has since risen to 38, with at least 22 of the dead being children.

Khaosod English reported that 24 children had died, but at the moment the exact death toll is still being finalised.

MAN CANCELLED TAXI BOOKING BUT HIS BOOKING FARE ALLEGEDLY NOT REFUNDED

0

Facebook user Francis Lew shared how he booked a taxi via the Comfort DelGro taxi app and paid with PayLah, and his money was allegedly deducted.

He said that another taxi arrived and he then cancelled his booking, but his money was allegedly not refunded to him.

Here is what he said

Pls be careful when you book ComfortDelGro Taxi with PayLah! I booked a comfort taxi and the amount was deducted from my paylah account before the taxi arrives.

While waiting, another comfort taxi arrives so I cancel the booking and board the one in front of me.

Eventually, the amount was not refunded back to me for the cancellation and after tons of emails and phone calls, they insisted there was no deduction.

Keep asking me to send proof which I did but after I sent all the evidence, they totally don’t reply me at all except for the automated replies.

It started on the 16th Sept and up till now, it’s still not resolve and no one get back to me after I sent all the evidence.

I think my money is gone with the wind as there’s no way for me to get my money back if they keep denying. Hope everyone will learn from my lesson.

EMPLOYEE FOUND OUT COMPANY HAS BEEN SPYING ON HIM THROUGH PERSONAL PHONE

0

Been in a company for close to 1 year, and after I tendered my resignation letter, it was revealed to me that they were able to see and hear me through the laptop, despite the in built functionality to block it, even after office hours, monitor me via my personal phone, digitally and through audio and images everyday (worst case scenario) for the last 1 year.

A major breach of privacy, not to mention laws? Personally, a huge concern as well?

And not everything also they need to know or I need to explain to them- I hope this is not an entitled thing to say? As far as I am aware, if they think that my work performance is suffering, they could convey that to me through or ask me to leave, and yes company owes you nothing they can just ask you to leave even if you cry or beg, but not pry into my personal life on their own and come up with their own conclusions? I’m not a private person but I needed some time off to sort some things on my own- I had a timeline too- 1 year (kept to schedule).

Also, not to blame shift, but their prying affected me more because I didn’t understand why they care sm about what I do with my life. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m not blaming them, afterall we are only able to control ourself. And I am also grateful that they didn’t do anything worse though, like something worse, like really. I am trying to understand their POV too.

My childish self tried to post and say more “nonsense” when I suspected it and when I found out, which backfired on me.

Anyway, should I bring this up directly to them (the one who conveyed this information to me)? Should I ask them if they be taking any legal/ illegal actions actions against me? Should I ask them if the data are “stored”- is there even a point in asking this- as they might lie about it even if they have digital copies stored?

Should I leave without saying anything?

Netizens’ comments

  • Wait hang on. Putting your work performance aside:
how did they monitor you through your private phone? Is it a company laptop? And how did you find out? They admitted to it
I’m no lawyer but I don’t see how this is legal in any way. Did they inform of this when you started working?
there’s never a need for a company to know what you do in your private life unless you are working for some top secret government security unit.
I wouldn’t engage them further until after you seek actual legal advice. Honestly this whole thing sounds extremely shitty on your company’s part. Would help if you can give us more details on what you work as (ok I admit, more of kaypoh la)
    • (OP) I can’t reveal that here as they may be here too
No they did not. As a matter of fact, when I revealed it to someone internal, that person was shocked that this was happening too
  • Gather evidence, bring your laptop and phone to sim lim to see if any spyware can be found.
Once you have the evidence of this, sue your company.
It stops them from doing this with impunity.
Benefit for you is they will try to settle. You are leaving anyway, so burning bridges is not a big problem.
  • How did they reveal it? They said it outright, or they mentioned things that they had no other way of knowing?
Are you sure this one person isn’t just lying to you? I can’t overstate how unlikely it is that an MNC installed a webcam/mic spyware on your computer and watched you. Something like this would result in a humongous lawsuit, that could set you for life.
The most they could do is record your windows session, and monitor your keystrokes and internet traffic on the company devices. Which is expected.
It’s extremely unlikely they could “monitor” you through your PERSONAL phone. How would they achieve that? Unless you mean logging your chats on Teams when logged in to the work account.
    • (OP) Personal phone- they likely did it through the office wifi, when the phone connected to it.

MAN SPENT HUGE CHUNK OF SAVINGS ON ENGAGEMENT RING, FIANCEE WANTS A BIGGER ONE

0

My (29m) fiancé (28f) has just asked for a bigger engagement ring. I am pretty deflated and not sure where to go from here.

We have spent the last 5 years together & I felt the time was right to take the next step.

She had dropped plenty of hints as to the style and I thought I had nailed it- I have seen her dream engagement ring moodboard, featuring outrageously massive diamonds.

I customised the band and setting for a month or so before ordering and popping the question a few days ago.

She seemed genuinely over the moon at the time but a day or so later comments such as ‘I wish we had gone to try on rings together’ began to pop up, and just now she flat out said she wants a bigger diamond.

I’m by no means rich but spent a sizeable chunk of my savings on this, as well as time designing and picking the perfect (or so I thought) stone out.

I feel like this is a massive red flag and I’m debating whether to call off the engagement and break up with her. How do I approach the situation from here?
