S’PORE RANKED 1ST IN THE WORLD FOR HAVING THE BEST ROADS, SCORE OF 9.44/10

0

Singapore has been ranked as having the best roads in the world with a score of 9.44 out of 10, according to driver’s education resource website Zutobi.

Singapore’s roads were ranked above countries like Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan and Denmark in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively.

Malaysia, on the other hand, was ranked 12th from last, at 48th place.

The roads of countries were analysed by Zutobi according to factors such as road quality, improvements in road quality, deaths on the road and the size of the road networks.

The tabulated data would then factor into the scoring of the roads of the different countries, and Singaproe ended up with a score of 9.44 out of 10, being the only country with more than 9 points.

LTA’s statement on the ranking

We are heartened to learn that Singapore has emerged as tops as having the best roads in the world – in fact we attained the highest in the overall roads score and recorded the fewest road traffic deaths vis-a-vis other countries like the Netherlands, Switzerland and Japan.

WOMAN BROUGHT OWN RECYCLED BAG TO SUPERMARKET, GETS CHARGED $1 FOR HER OWN BAG

0

Facebook user Mandy Lim shared how she brought her own recycled bag to a supermarket and was charged $1 for the bag, which she previously bought from the same supermarket.

Here is what she said

I dont understand why when i bring the recycled bag (previously bought) from Scarlett, still have to be charge again for it. I bought the recycled bag from them when i did my previous purchases.

Luckily i checked my receipt when i on the escalator. Sad for me and my gals are that we have come down again with my trolley of stuffs to confront the cashier. And yet she is non-apologetic at all. Not even a sorry from her nor from the male manager or staff in blue shirt when she ask for his assistance to refund me the $1.

The thing is me and my gals pull the scarlett recycled bag from my trolley infront of the cashier when it is my turn to make payment. When the cashier asked if i want the plastic bags, i replied no, i have my own brought recycled bag. Yet she charged me for my own brought recycled bag.

I am dumbfounded totally. Even though it is only $1 but still i think it is ridiculous lor.

If the shop sells recycled bags for shoppers like us, then still double charge us for it when we bring our previous bought recycled bags from them. Then what is the point of us buying and bringing the recycled bags.

I think they need to further train their staffs.

Never once i encountered such issues with NTUC when i bring the ntuc recycled bag from home. Maybe they should learn from NTUC to put a pricetag on their new recycled bags to differientiate between those havent paid for and customers own brought one.

2 Y.O DIES AFTER FALLING FROM A BABY CHAIR AT A RESTAURANT IN JOHOR BAHRU

0

In a fatal accident in a restaurant in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, a two-year-old boy was suspected of kicking a table when throwing a tantrum.

As a result, he fell together with the baby chair and he slammed into the ground and hit his head on first impact. He was sent to the hospital but pronounced dead.

The accident happened in a restaurant in Skudai Wufu City, Johor Bahru, at around 3 pm on Tuesday (October 4). Johor police said in a statement that the boy’s parents took the boy to a restaurant and sat him in a baby chair.

“During the meal, the baby boy kicked the table because of his tantrum, causing the baby chair he was sitting on to fall down and his head hit the ground.”

It is understood that the baby chair involved is a wooden chair.

The police also said that the waiter at the scene saw the baby boy first burst into tears and then lost consciousness. The parents then rushed him to a nearby private clinic, but the doctor at the clinic suggested that the parents take the child to the hospital as soon as possible based on the seriousness of the child’s injury.

“The parents sent the child to a private hospital in Butri, Iskandar, and it was later confirmed that the child had died of serious injuries.” The police also said that so far the case did not involve criminal elements, so the case was classified as a “sudden death case”.

S’PORE WOMAN MARRIES FOREIGNER, SCARED BABY WILL BE S’PORE CITIZEN IF BORN HERE

Can I choose the citizenship of my child?

Hi!, I am a Singaporean woman married to a foreigner. I was reading about the citizenship law in Singapore and am a bit confused with the information from different years.

I would like to skip taking the SG citizenship, because we plan to move out of Singapore permanently after the baby is born.

When I read the law, the SG citizenship is automatically given to Singaporean women, if they are married to a Singapore citizen as well.

Does this mean that, since my husband is foreign, we can forgo SG citizenship and just apply for his nationality’s citizenship?

I just want to know if the SG citizenship would be automatically granted to my baby or not. If you know this, thanks in advance!

Netizens’ comments

  • Hi! i’m in the exact same situation as you. you’re right, the information out there is vague and not exactly helpful. but my husband and i want to move back to his home country within the next few years as well.
  • I have emailed ICA and they got back to me swiftly saying that if I am Singaporean and my baby is born in Singapore, there is no option to opt out of Singapore Citizenship
They also advised that renounciation of Singaporean Citizenship can only be done when the child turns 21 years old (i.e. after doing NS). hope this helps! our plan is to deliver overseas.
  • My spouse is foreign and my two boys hold dial citizenship. ( SG+Foreign) Until they turn 21 and only after completion of NS can they give up one or the other citizenship.
In the event that you for whatever reason decides to comes back to SG and if your son does not have Singaporean citizenship. Then it will be more expensive to go to school as he won’t be able to easily enroll in local schools.
And of cos he will have to come in on a dependent pass which is not an issue usually. As your child is a boy. I would suggest you give it a serious consideration whether you want him to take up SG citizenship…cos the complication that comes with NS liability.
If it’s a girl…then no issues..just register and take the baby bonus and other incentives. In my case as I am living in SG and no intention to relocate. ….I suppose I don’t have much of a choice….good luck

PUSHY PROPERTY AGENT EYEING ELDERLY COUPLE’S FLAT, SEES IT AS HIS “POT OF GOLD”

0

My parents are very close to retirement and would like to retire in a more spacious place (don’t ask me why I’ve tried talking them out of it). Nevertheless as their sole child, I got put to the task. I set a strict budget after assessing CPF and potential cash proceeds of our current flat, engaged an agent and finally found a massive slightly older flat with nice unblocked views that ticked most of our boxes. Though within budget, we needed to fork out quite a lot for reno and owner was adamant on getting a certain COV level (close to 90k). After a few counter offers we lost to an all cash offer.

Agent made my dad sign some contract as soon as we gave first offer to the first flat, including another to sell our current flat. Since we lost the flat, we’ve been brought to viewings to flats in Punggol and Sengkang that frankly, feel like a complete downgrade from where we currently live with insane COVs with nothing to show for it (e.g. confirm need reno, far from LRT, no privacy, cramped, etc)

I’ve kept telling my parents over and over that where we are now is extremely valuable (2 MRT lines literally across the road, 3+ malls etc you can already guess where we live lol) and even if 50 years on nobody would buy the flat, the government certainly will because it’s undeniably valuable real estate. Downgrading to a flat in NE area just for extra room feels like a complete waste of their hard earned retirement funds (complete wipe out of their CPF OA plus need to fork out cash). My dad hit FRS already but I’d much rather they have excess of cash for a comfortable retirement than undertake a crushing 3k+ monthly mortgage for another decade.

The agent seems to sense that I’m the main deterrent to my parents throwing money to a random flat and has been a little more terse with us recently (understandably because my parents are quite picky and find flaws everywhere but not unreasonably so).

Our current flat is an easy sale (people will literally knock our door and ask us if we intend to sell) so the agent has been quite pushy to start listing when we very clearly told them from start that we will buy first then sell only.

I feel like I’d be doing them a favour by cutting them loose because our family isn’t desperate for a house like a young couple is. Do we have to pay a certain fee to them for having shown us listings?

MP LOUIS NG WILL NOT BE FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR HOLDING SIGN WITHOUT PERMIT

0

Nee Soon GRC Member of Parliament, Louis Ng, will not be facing criminal charges for holding a sign with the words “support them” during a visit to hawkers, without a permit.

Ng was investigated for holding the placard, and the latest update comes after the police concluded their investigations into the incident.

He was investigated after local activist Jolovan Wham was charged with holding a card with a smiley face on it in Toa Payoh back in 2020.

The police have been directed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to take no further action against the MP under the Public Order Act, according to a spokesperson for the AGC.

The spokesperson said that “Investigations have revealed that Mr Ng was exercising his duty as a Member of Parliament, in expressing care and support for the welfare of the hawkers in his constituency during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

They added that part of the key considerations in deciding if an offence had been committed in the act are the nature of the act and the intent of the person.

UNI STUDENT ASKS IF HE SHOULD GET HIS DEGREE FROM OVERSEAS UNI, OR STAY IN SG

Choosing between going overseas or staying in SG for uni

Some context, I’m currently studying in SMU and was originally enrolled in the computing and law course (I had this image that i was gonna become some coding lawyer and at the time i found very appealing), I soon realised that law wasn’t for me (in short i hate reading 400 pages of legal jargon a day) and tried to change to CS as that’s originally what I wanted to do (got rejected from NUS cs) but only got offered Information systems. Which is not technical enough to go into software engineering which is originally my dream job.

I recently got into CS at UNSW in australia (which is apparently the best cs uni in aus) but I’m worried that getting a good job in singapore may be very difficult, as it is not as prestigious as a local uni. I’ve also considered working in aus for a few years to get a running start in my career but I’ve heard that it is difficult for foreigners to work in Australia due to visa restrictions.

I’m now torn between staying in my current course (information systems) at SMU were the job prospects are very promising or taking the risk going oversees to pursue a degree with potentially bigger upside.

I’m hoping to get some advice on the situation as I don’t want to make a decision that I’ll regret again.

MAN AFRAID THAT HIS 3RD CLASS HONOURS ENGINEERING DEGREE CAN’T GET FIND A JOB

0

I will be graduating soon with an expected pass degree in NTU engineering.

Im not sure how will I be able to get a job as I heard even 3rd class honours are not desired. Throughout my years in engineering, I always find it tough and stressful that made me lost my interest in this field.I do not wish to go down this career path as Im not good with my technical skills.

I want to venture into another industries but the progression in the long term is not that great, neither do I have the experience to get hired. I’m just so lost and pressured at the same time to perform well in order to let others know Im fine.

Here are what netizens think:

  • Engineering is just physics and math, try harder
  • Just remember, your gpa is important only for your first job. Subsequent jobs, they want to know what experience you have to contribute to the company. Good luck!
  • it does not matter if u 3rd class honours. U have an NTU degree cert. Most companies see local uni cert as priority.
  • With the background you can still do many things. You can teach math, dnt, computing. You can do sales of engineering equipment. You can move into other sectors and other countries like mobile phones research. You can move into government departments.
  • Depends which engineering u go to. Mech for me. My employer didn’t see grades just personality and my drive & commitment. It’s not the end of the world

GUY FEELS LOST, GF ANGRY AT HIM EVERYDAY FOR 2 MONTHS OVER EVERYTHING & SHOUTS AT HIM

0

My gf (20f) and I (22f) have been together for two years but for the past few months, there hasn’t been two days in a row where she doesn’t get angry and yell at me for seemingly no reason.

I’ve tried talking to her about it a dozen times, but she gets really irritated and starts insulting me every time. I buy her flowers and write her love letters and help her however I can and always try to be the best girlfriend possible for her. I can’t think of anything I could have done to make her this upset.

She says she’s been stressed lately, but she’s always been extremely stressed by work and school, even before we started dating. There aren’t any new stressors in her life, and she never treated me like this at all until about a year ago. It’s just gotten worse over the past few months. Every time she calls me or walks into our apartment, I’m bracing myself to get yelled at.

I’m not an angry person but one time after she blew me off for date night and left me waiting at the nice restaurant I made a reservation at, I came home and yelled at her. I told her that she has no respect for my time or my patience or my kindness and that she needs to reevaluate her priorities and start treating me right.

I’ve never yelled at her like that before– I never yell at her at all– but she actually listened to me that night. She told me she was sorry and that she wasn’t being fair to me and that she loves me. We cuddled and watched a movie and it was the best night we’ve had together in probably a year.

I don’t really know how to go about this anymore. She’s my girlfriend and I love her but lately she’s just been making me feel like crap all the time. She doesn’t put nearly as much effort into me as I put into her and she says she’s going to work on that, but then she never does. I hate being being caught up in other people’s anger more than anything. I don’t want to lose her but I feel like I might be anyways.
