PRC MAN SPENT $14K TO FLY TO S’PORE FOR NEW JOB, BUT SHOPEE RETRACTS JOB OFFER

0

A man from China spent about SGD$14,000 to fly to Singapore, where he was supposed to start his new job as an algorithm engineer at Shopee, according to Lianhe Zaobao.

He landed in Singapore on 25 August and was supposed to start his job on 29 August, but he received a call from Shopee on the same day he landed in Singapore, telling him that they have retracted their job offer for him.

Speaking to Mothership, after Shopee revoked his job offer at the very last minute, the man and his wife are now staying at a hotel and applying for jobs and interviews.

Zaobao reported that the 28-year-old man, who comes from Shanghai, finished a doctoral programme at a Chinese university and he first received an offer from Shopee in September last year.

He was scheduled to begin his employment with the company on 29 August this year, with the delay being caused by the pandemic.

He said that he had received offers from other companies and ultimately chose Shopee.

He shared that he heard rumours about other people having their job offers rescinded by Shopee, so he called them to check about his own offer, and he was allegedly told that there was no problem with his job offer.

The man even received a welcome email from Shopee, with instructions for his onboarding into the company, one day before his flight to Singapore on 25 August.

FORMER M’SIA PM NAJIB IN JAIL FOR LESS THAN 2 WEEKS, SENT TO HOSPITAL FOR “CHECK UP”

0

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was previously sentenced to 12 year imprisonment at the Kajang Prison.

However, after serving less than 2 weeks of his sentence, he was subsequently admitted to the hospital on 4 September.

He is reportedly in “stable condition” and going through “treatments”, but his officials stopped short of revealing what ailments the former PM is facing.

They only revealed that Najib had “some pain”.

Malaysian news media also reported that the Kajang Prison where Najib was imprisoned at, doesn’t have the medical facilities for Najib’s “medical needs”.

Recap

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, failed in his final appeal before the Federal Court and was sent to prison with immediate effect on 23 August.

He will be serving a 12-year jail sentence for a slew of offences, including corruption; as well as being fined RM210 million.

Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat ruled that Najib had failed to show that the findings of the lower court were erroneous and needed the apex court to intervene.

The decisions of the High Court and the Court of Appeal were then upheld.

President of UMNO Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, as well as Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor, were present at the hearing when he received his verdict.

Najib was convicted on three counts of criminal breach of trust, three counts of money laundering, and 1 count of using his power for illegal activities.

This was in relation to Najib misappropriating RM42 million of funds that belonged to SRC Internation, which was a subsidiary of 1MDB.

He was earlier sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for his offences back in July 2020, but he filed multiple appeals against his earlier convictions, before his judgment yesterday.

This makes Najib the first former prime minister of Malaysia to be sentenced to prison.

LUGGAGE FALLS DOWN ESCALATOR AND HITS WOMAN FROM BEHIND, VICTIM HOSPITALISED

0

A heavy luggage belonging to a commuter at the Hangzhou Metro Station in China, tumbled down from the top of an escalator and hit a woman who was standing below from behind.

The commuter had let go of the luggage while trying to load another one onto the escalator, and it then rolled away from her.

The escalator was very steep and the luggage then lost its balance and started falling down the escalator at speed.

The luggage was tumbling down at such great speed that the woman couldn’t avoid it in time, and she was then “taken out” by the luggage.

She ended up being hospitalised after receiving emergency treatment, sustaining injuries including severe back pain.

The incident took place on 29 August.

The commuter to whom the luggage belonged to, is a first-year university student, and she later apologised to the victim with her family.

The victim is currently in stable condition.

WOMAN BOUGHT B’DAY CAKE FOR PARTY BUT ORDER WAS CANCELLED BY DELIVERY DRIVER

0

Facebook user Rosnah Abu shared how she ordered a cake for a birthday party but her delivery order was allegedly cancelled by the delivery driver and no new arrangements were made.

The staff then asked her if she still wanted the cake and it can only be delivered in 30 to 40 minutes. However, her party guests were already leaving.

She then requested for a refund and was allegedly told to email the company instead, and when she did so, she said that all she got was a refund invoice without an apology.

Here is what she said

Ordered a cake from Chocolate Origin website on 3rd Sep for a birthday party. I chosed the time slot 7pm to 9pm delivery on same day. By 9.15pm, no cake was delivered.

I called Chocolate Origin branch at Jewel and was told to call main branch at Kallang. Called them at 9.15pm and was told that delivery driver cancelled the pickup. I was shocked that Chocolate Origin did not bother to make another arrangement!

When I asked staff ( who’s name is AR) why no new arrangement made for the delivery, she simply said sorry with no other explanation!!

She in fact asked if I still want the cake! And If I still want it to be delivered, can only be delivered in 30 to 40mins. I rejected this as my guests were already leaving. I requested for refund and was told to email them instead.

I emailed Chocolate Origin about what happened. The reply came with a refund invoice with no apology at all.
What if I didnt call to chk? I would still be waiting for the cake which would never be delivered!

A birthday cake is the highlight of a birthday party and no thanks to Chocolate Origin, there was no cake for birthday boy.

POFMA NOTICE ISSUED TO “THE ALTERNATIVE VIEW” FOR SAYING HDB PROFITS FROM AMK BTO FLATS

0

A POFMA Correction Direction was issued to The Alternative View for their Facebook post implying that HDB profits from the Ang Mo Kio BTO flats.

Ministry of National Development’s statement

CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS REGARDING A FALSEHOOD ON THE ALTERNATIVE VIEW’S FACEBOOK POST

The Facebook post published by The Alternative View on 1 September 2022 contains a false and misleading statement.

2 The Minister for National Development has instructed the POFMA Office to issue a Correction Direction 1
to The Alternative View as its Facebook post communicates the falsehood that HDB profits from the sale of the Central Weave @ AMK BTO flats. The platform will be required to insert a notice against the original post, with a link to the Government’s clarification.

Clarifications regarding falsehoods

3 On 1 September 2022, The Alternative View published a Facebook post, which reproduces the headline of an article from AsiaOne (dated 31 August 2022) stating “Ang Mo Kio BTO flats: Strong demand for 5-room units despite prices of up to $877k”, contains an image of the Minister for National Development holding a bag of money, and ends with the caption asking “How much profit is HDB reaping from this?”. Implicitly this post is stating that HDB is making profit from the sale of the Central Weave @ AMK Build-to-Order (BTO) flats, which are part of the August 2022 BTO sales exercise. This statement is false.

4 HDB will not profit from the sale of the Central Weave @ AMK BTO flats. In fact, it will incur a loss from this project, as the estimated amount to be collected from the sale is lower than the estimated total development cost of the project. If we take into account the CPF housing grants that HDB will extend to eligible buyers, the deficit is higher still.

5 The amount HDB collects from the sale of flats in every financial year is less than the costs it incurs, including the total development cost (comprising land cost and construction cost) and CPF housing grants. HDB incurs a deficit every year.

6 For the Financial Year (FY) 2021/2022, HDB incurred a deficit of $3.85 billion in its Homeownership Programme. The average deficit incurred by HDB in the last three years (FY2019/20 – FY2021/22) was about $2.68 billion per year. The annual deficit, funded by Government grants, is reflected in HDB’s audited financial
statements published annually.

7 HDB’s deficit is largely due to the significant subsidies extended for new flats and the disbursement of CPF housing grants for eligible buyers. Because of this, most firsttimer buyers use less than a quarter of their monthly income to service their housing loans. Close to 90% of first-timer families service their HDB loans using CPF with little or no cash payments.

8 HDB will continue to use the allocated resources judiciously to provide affordable and quality homes for Singaporeans.

9 For the facts of the case, please refer to the Factually article “Corrections
regarding HDB’s BTO programme” (https://www.gov.sg/article/factually040922).

MAN WITH $8K/MTH SALARY, ASKS HOW COME THOSE IN TECH SECTOR EARNING $30K

0

Sometimes I wonder if everyone should just join tech sector. I am 30yo male earning 8k a month. I am aware that is not a bad number.

But I know people in tech sector who earn like 15k-30k even in their early 30s. That is something people in my sector earn at director level in their 40s…

Now I understand tech jobs are well paying for a reason but the gap still baffles me sometimes. A lot of my friends quit their non-tech job to learn coding to join tech.

I wonder if that is something all of us should be doing, given such a big gap between tech pay and the rest.

Netizens’ comments

  • You know the ppl who’s earning 15-30k in early 30s, meaning u know them personally or just hearsay? Basically the harder the role, the more niche it is to find the right skill sets and hence the higher pay you get. Go and ask the person earning 30k a month what role he’s doing. It’s not just learning coding and jump into tech industry and hey presto you will earn such high pay.
  • Maybe i have a different opinion but this is what i think. It will never be enough for you once you keep comparing others salary. I’ll be more than happy if i have ur pay knowing how much i can pay the bills n stuffs and still can save a good amount. But its up to you if you feel you deserves a better salary. They also may have skills and experience that you havent acquired.
