NETIZEN WHO GOT SCAMMED ASKS IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECOVER THE LOSSES

0

A netizen who apparently fell for a scam on Carousell was seen posting online asking if anyone had fell for a scam and yet managed to recover their money before.

Here is what he asked

“So recently I fell victim to a scam… it was a Carousell one.

Someones account with over 300 5 star reviews got hacked and was being used by a scammer. I had believed the deal since I saw so many reviews and proceeded to paynow (DBS) the guy but never received the product.

Only things I have is his paynow number and his name associated with that, as well as his whatsapp number which is now inactive.

I called DBS and they said getting the money back would be on a best effort basis and they could only do so after the IO prompts them to.

I’m trying not to keep my hopes up but I just wanted to ask if anyone that has been in a scam every get their money back?”

Replies and comments by netizens

  • How much were u scammed? If it’s a small amount then make a report with the necessary authorities and move on. No point losing sleep over this. I don’t understand why people like to paynow the seller directly when carousell offers the caroupay platform to transact. Even when I’m selling items, I would insist to use caroupay to avoid the other mess if the other party chut pattern.
  • Make a police report but treat the money as gone. I got scammed 4.6k last December & never got it back. Just take it as the price of learning the lesson.
  • Hope you learn your lesson. Which is more important to you? Being scammed or having assurance that you can get a refund if the seller is a scammer? One costs more than the other. Choose wisely.

NETIZEN APPROACHED BY YOUNG BOY ASKING FOR MONEY INSIDE NTUC

0

A netizen was seen posting online about an encounter which he had with a little boy at an NTUC supermarket in the vicinity of his block.

According to the netizen, the young boy approached him to ask him for money.

Here is what the netizen said

“This just happened to me. Out for a late night walk. Got approached by a small boy – around 6 years old. No t-shirt, no shoes. He asked me for money. I said I would buy him anything he wanted from NTUC. But he wanted to buy a toy from the provision shop (yes, still open that late).

But I didn’t have any cash, only my phone, and the shop only takes cash. So I said I couldn’t help him. So he went off to ask someone else for money instead.

Not the first time I’ve been approached by a kid asking for money. The last time it happened, the kid walked away dejectedly when I said I would accompany him to a supermarket to buy him anything he wanted.

Has this sort of thing happened to any of you before? How did you handle it? I would’ve bought the kid a toy if I could, but I couldn’t. But does that encourage kids to approach random strangers to ask for things? Is this ok?

(I think the kids live in the rental blocks near my block)”

Replies and comments from netizens

  • I’d be more concerned that a young kid is walking by himself late at night, especially in your case without t-shirt and shoes. He could be separated from his parents and is walking around aimlessly. I’d ask him some questions regarding who he knows and where he stays just to bring him back to someone who knows him, even better if there’s a police station nearby where I can bring him to so that I can leave him under the temporary care of someone (the police) who I can trust to take care of him.
  • Sounds like a case of lack of parental supervision and potential neglect. I would probably buy the toy for him and talk to him about the dangers of going out alone. Will then get him shoes (if not too difficult) and send him back home. I’ll also talk to his parents. Lastly, I will contact the nearest Family Service Office (since I have the unit number) and the social service worker can go and speak to the parents.
  • During this month, open camera n point to child, if have image then respond.

MAN GOT INHERITANCE OF $50K, NEW GF ARGUES & DEMANDS HIM TO SHARE IT

0

I (29m) recently got into an argument with my girlfriend (28f) about money.

About 2 years ago, I received a large inheritance from a wealthy aunt. Honestly, we weren’t very close, and I wasn’t really expecting to get anything. She left behind a couple of million worth of assets, and most of that went to her kids.

I was surprised to find out that she left me $50,000 (each of my siblings and cousins got the same amount).

When I got the money, I used most of it to pay off the rest of my student loans. Next, I bought a new computer and put the rest towards retirement.

Recently, my girlfriend was hanging out with one of my female cousins when she heard about the money we all got. This triggered an argument the next time we saw each other about why I was keeping this a secret from her and why I never offered to use it to help her with her own debt.

I told her that it wasn’t really a secret; it was just something I never really felt a need to talk about. I got the money and used most of it immediately. There was nothing really left to talk about.

She was upset at that, saying that I should have talked about it with her first and that the money could have really helped her back then.

I was kind of baffled because when I got the inheritance, we’d only been seeing each other for a couple of months. Way too early for that kind of financial entanglement.

She got even more upset and said that I should use some of it for her now, but I once again told her the money was basically gone. All that’s left is in a retirement account, and I’m not touching that.

We argued back and forth some more, and I got the sense she didn’t quite believe me about the money and thought that I had more left than I said I did. Nothing I could say would convince her otherwise.

All I could do was emphasize that everything left from the inheritance was in a retirement account that I would not touch. She called me selfish and left to stay with her sister.

We’ve been in a sort of cold war for about a week and I can’t help wonder if I did something wrong

NETIZEN ASKS IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO OWN OVERSEAS PROPERTY YET BUY HDB

0

A netizen posted online asking if it is possible for him or her to own a overseas Government property and yet own a HDB in Singapore.

Here is what was shared

“Doing some life plannings…

Married a foreigner and planning to have retirement life over there but it is at least another good 25 years.

Currently i have no HDB in singapore but i’m planning to get one in the next few years. However, there is a really good opportunity now in another country to buy a property. So when i read up HDB website, to purchase a resale with grants, the owners of the HDB shouldn’t have any OVERSEAS PRIVATE PROPERTY.

So this overseas property opportunity is actually govt property… will it be possible for me to get HDB and is grants after i purchase the govt property from another country? Or perhaps any one knows what does private property mean in HDB website? Anyone encountered any similar thing before? Need help.”

Replies and comments by netizens

  • No, you can’t own any property overseas if you want those grants for HDB
  • Just send an email to HDB to ask. If someone on the forum say can, years later you going to use their reply to justify your case to buy a HDB?
  • If an overseas property opportunity came up, and you can take up this property, it is probably private property. This is especially so when you can dispose of it as a matter of personal rights. It does not matter if the seller is a foreign government. In Singapore, private property means non-HDB property.

BF CALLS GF MATERIALISTIC CAUSE SHE WANTS TO INSTALL AIR CON FOR NEW BTO

0

Is my boyfriend (M25) really stingy or am I (F24) too materialistic, I just want to install an air con unit in our home. But he refuses.

Hello, we stay in Singapore which is hot and humid we don’t stay in Genting highlands, we definitely need air con.

A little background about our relationship, we have been together for 4 years and met during our University years.

Now we both have full-time jobs and make a decent amount of money that can afford a comfortable living situation. I love him so much because we get along so well. We have so many things in common and our communication skills with each other are amazing except for one thing he is super cheap.

He makes over 80k a year but we have not gone on a date for over a year. We can’t even get simple things like coffee or ice cream or anything for that matter.

He wasn’t always like this, for the first two years of our relationship we used to go all the time and it was never a problem.

BTO

We recently BTO and started planning on what to install and design for the new flat, I told him I wanted to browse for air conditioners and he started questioning me why we have to install aircon.

We started arguing and he said that air con cost is a few thousand dollars and it would increase the money we have to spend for it.

The argument finally settled when I said that I am going to pay full for it and he is not allowed to use it and has to sleep separately in another room without any air con installed.

Recently he told me that he would get upset when I would get things like cheese on my plate for an extra charge when we used to go out or nacho at the movies because you can have those things at home.

I feel like I have been lied to because I only found this out after 4 years of dating. Yes, he was cheap in other ways like buying things on sale and not buying a lot but I thought it was normal.

His excuse is that he just doesn’t like to spend money and wants to live on the bare minimum. All along he knew I worked so hard to have a better lifestyle, a comfortable lifestyle. He knew that I like to go out at least once a week.

However, now he is saying he never wants to do it. Please tell me this isn’t a normal way to have a relationship with significant other and I’m not too materialistic as he says.

It’s would be so hard to end this relationship because I always thought he is the one but after hearing this I don’t know if I can live the rest of my life like this.

I got half a mind to cancel the BTO and call off everything.

Any advise how to handle this situation is welcomed.

PREGNANT GF SHUTS OFF BF’S INTERNET AND HE EXPLODES ON HER

0

My boyfriend (28M) and I (21F) have been together for about 6 months now, but we were FWB for about a year and a half before that.

We’ve also been living together for about 5 months now and this is my first time ever living with a partner. I’m currently 32 weeks pregnant with our son.

Recently, Ive getting after my boyfriend about him helping me with the nursery.

There still so much left to do and he promised me weeks ago that this is something we would work on together. I’m the only one that’s done anything for it so far and honestly I’m the only one that’s done anything baby related throughout my pregnancy.

When he asked me to move in, he made a lot of promises that he hasn’t kept up with.

Well Thursday was just my boiling point. I had a rough day at work, we work together at a restaurant. He got to leave at like 9 and I was working until 2 and didn’t get home until 3AM.

Since I knew my boyfriend would be getting home earlier, I asked if he could wash some new clothes we got for the baby and put together a dresser we got delivered weeks ago. He said he would and when I got home, I saw the bag of baby clothes still on the kitchen counter and the box with the dresser unopened.

My boyfriend was in the living room playing games on his computer, which he’d probably been doing since he got off of work.

I was going to let it go, but then I went to get my dinner from the fridge. I’ve been craving food, so I wanted to heat up some leftovers I made yesterday. When I opened the fridge and pulled out the baking dish, it was completely empty. So not only did he eat my dinner, but he also put the dirty dish back in the fridge.

I asked him why he ate my dinner when he knew I wanted it and he told me to F off because he was playing his game and he ignored me every time I tried to talk to him.

So I took my phone out, and shut off the internet using the app. He absolutely lost it, as it scared me, and I asked him to leave.

He called me all kinds of names and said I was ungrateful and that he should break up with me over something like that.

I really didn’t think he would blow up like that, I was just frustrated and tried to get his attention. He left that night and stayed at his brothers place. He said he won’t go home yet and I apologized. I feel like I crossed a line I didn’t know would just make everything fall apart. I feel like he really does hate me now. I don’t know how else to apologize.

NETIZEN SAYS ‘SMALL ORDER CHARGE’ ON APPS LIKE GRAB SHOULD BE REMOVED

0

A netizen wrote a post online, seemingly to slam restaurants for the ‘small order charge’ which are imposed on consumers who order food from apps like Grab, FoodPanda and Deliveroo etc.

The netizen added that the ‘small order charge’ on platforms like Grab, FoodPanda and Deliveroo etc should be removed because if he or she were to go down to the vendor and order instead, he or she would not be charged extra for not meeting the minimum order fee.

Here is what the netizen said

“Does anyone else feel that the small order charges on apps like Grab, FoodPanda and Deliveroo etc , in addition to the normal delivery fees and other ‘miscellaneous’ charges already in place, by some vendors in food delivery apps is totally ridiculous and should be removed?

If we were to order the same things in person at the actual location, we would not have been charged on apps like Grab, FoodPanda and Deliveroo etc for not meeting the minimum order of say, $15.

So why should vendors even be allowed to take advantage of consumers who use the app in this manner? And the sad thing is while we have to pay that additional charge on Grab, FoodPanda and Deliveroo etc, this does not equate to an increase in portion sizes or more ingredients in our orders.

It is for this reason I boycott vendors who practice this ridiculous money-grabbing tactic.”

Fellow netizen explained the rationale

“The small order fee is 100% a push by the delivery platform (i.e. Grab, Foodpanda, Deliveroo) and not by the vendor. Whoever is working at these delivery platforms and telling you it’s vendors who are imposing the fee are almost certainly lying.

A common misconception that people have is the “delivery fee” in the app is how much the delivery riders on Grab, Foodpanda, Deliveroo etc get paid. This is not true. Riders get paid on a different pay scale which is completely different from the delivery fee you see in the app. Nobody is going to travel 3 km to you to earn $5.

The actual number is probably around $6 – $10 per order depending on distance. How does Grab pay their riders $10 when the “delivery fee” is only $5, you ask? From the 30% cut they take from the vendors, of course.

But what if the 30% cut is not enough to cover the difference? Then Grab lose money? That’s right. But who wants to lose money right?

What if there is a way to make it so that the 30% cut is always enough to cover the difference? What if we introduce a small order fee? :)”

MCDONALD’S NOW ACCEPTS NS55 CREDITS AS PAYMENT, TIME TO UPSIZE

0

NS55 credit is something that is given to many NSFs and NSmen but a few have stated their difficulties in using the credit.

Some coffeeshop workers often are confused on how it works and customers who ends up losing their patience use cash instead.

Therefore many have chosen to cash it out and withdraw it instead of buying directly at any merchants.

Another merchant is now accepting NS55 credits, Mcdonalds Singapore posted on Facebook yesterday stating that they are now accepting the credits at all restaurants in Singapore.

Here is what McDonald’s said on Facebook:

“Fall in, NSFs and NSmen! Whether you’ve ORD-ed or you’re just booking out, here’s one more reason to enjoy your McDonald’s favourites.

Now, you can redeem your NS55 credits at restaurants all over Singapore. What are you waiting for? Grab your buddies and have a great time!

DPM Wong also added in one of his photos that he had not rode a bike for almost 20 years.

The event was organised by Riders Aid Singapore (RAS) as part of fund raising efforts for the Singapore Children’s Cancer Foundation.

DPM Wong also shared that he was glad to see the ‘Singapore Spirit’ coming from Singaporeans from all walks of life from the event itself.

He added that he is confident that as long as Singaporeans have the mindset of ‘paying it forward’, we will be able to turn all our challenges into opportunities and make Singapore a more caring and inclusive society.

Here is the Facebook post by DPM Wong

“The Riders Aid Singapore started with a simple idea — a group of motorcycle enthusiasts rallying to do good together.

Glad to do my part to join the RAS and Ride For Charity today — with more than 800 bikers to raise funds for the Singapore Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Seeing so many of us at the event, I am heartened by the #SingaporeSpirit — Singaporeans from all walks of life coming together for the common good and a larger purpose. I am confident that as long as we have the mindset of “paying it forward”, we can turn challenges into opportunities, and build a racially harmonious, caring, and inclusive Singapore for all.”
