MAN STAYS IN CHIANG MAI HOTEL KENA BED BUGS, WORRIED ITS IN LUGGAGE

0

My GF and I are currently staying in a Hotel in Chiang Mai.

When we first arrived in the afternoon the hotel room looked ok, so we took a walk into the city (about 3 hours). When we came back we found bugs all over the bed and some on our stuff (on the Internet we found out that they are bed bugs) there were also these black Marks on the mattress.

After like 30 min we called the Hotel staff and we got Another room for the Night. Now we are concerned if it’s possible that the Bugs could have crawled into our stuff and laid eggs.

We have separated everything and put it into sealed plastic bags. Also, we have no bite marks.

We don’t want to bring the bugs home from the hotel.

What should we do now? Thanks

Here are what netizens think:

  • Heat will kill bugs. If you can warm your stuff and leave it there for a few hours it will kill anything. You might be able to do that by putting it into a black garbage bag and leaving it in the sun.
  • I know bed bugs could be anywhere, but I’m just curious, which hotel? I’m staying in Chiang Mai soon.
  • I would run your stuff through a dryer at a laundry mat in your home before you go home just as safety protection. Bed bugs are terrible and extremely hard to kill you don’t want to bring them home.
  • It isn’t well known, but beg bugs are repelled by DEET found in mosquito sprays and lotions. Find the highest concentration of DEET you can, up to 50% and use as directed on the can/bottle. Big C, Tesco Lotus, etc carry the big brands like Off spray, but you can find lower concentrations at 7-11

COUPLE HAS 6 MAXED-OUT CREDIT CARDS, A MORTGAGE LOAN, AND $115K IN DEBT

My sister is financially screwed beyond all comprehension

My sister’s life is, to be honest, a mess. I don’t like her husband (can’t name a single family member of mine who likes him) and she got knocked up at 18 to him and had to drop out of school.

But whatever, not my monkey not my circus. Well, that is until your parent’s guilt trip you into helping her balance her budget because you work in financial tech and they know nothing about what that actually entails.

For the last two weeks, I’ve been trying to help her and her husband out with their situation. She works 8 hours a week doing part time work and he makes maybe $1.8k as a cleaner (before tax.)

They are under a mortgage for a home they cannot afford, have 2 kinds with a third on the way, and neither of them seems to have any motivation to try and find better jobs to pay off their loans despite this being a worker’s economy at the moment.

Despite all this though, until 2 days ago I thought they could at least pull their heads above water. The only debts that they told me they had were the mortgage and a single credit card.

I helped them a few hours over the weekends but noticed that something was not adding up at all. They refused to show me raw bank statements, giving me rough estimates for outgoing charges or edited statements to “help me understand their account better.”

I knew they were both lying to me and I told them last Saturday I’m done helping them unless they’re honest with me. Sister finally fessed up and told me they were hiding debts and loans from me because “she was embarrassed” and “didn’t want mom and dad to know how bad it was.”

I was annoyed but told her to give me EVERYTHING and let me look over it this week alone to come in this weekend with an actual strategy to help out.

Folks, dumb and dumber are roughly 115 thousand dollars in debt between them. This does not include their mortgage and loans after loans.

Some of the highlights include:

  • 6 maxed-out credit cards
  • a handful of debts I cannot figure out where they got them from
  • a car loan that they can’t afford
  • other miscellaneous loans

I don’t know how in gods good name these two have survived this long. They bleed over a thousand dollars a month just paying the minimums on all this and have been living off credit cards for probably a long time.

My brother-in-law asked me if I had taken a look at what they sent me last night. He said he was excited to hear my “silver bullet strategy” while I downed shot after shot of whisky reading this nightmare they’ve involved me in.

There is no silver bullet, these two are doomed. I’m not going over Saturday. I’m gonna tell them to find a bankruptcy lawyer and hope they survive whatever process comes from that.

Not my monkey, not my circus.

LADY IN 30s SAID THAT SHE CAN’T FIND A JOB EVEN AFTER SEVERAL APPLICATIONS

0

By the way, I’m a lady in her late 30s and married. I’m a marketer and a copywriter.

Context: Left my very toxic job in Feb and haven’t been able to secure another employment since I left.

I have been diligently applying for jobs since and have gone for some interviews to no avail. Have been applying not just for the usual ones (marketing, writing) jobs that I have experience in but to short-term ones too. Even went to #SGUnited jobs to take a look but there’s honestly nothing I can apply for.

To date, still nothing. Not even a part-time position.

So begs my question. Are there even truly companies still hiring during these times?

I’m almost at the brink of desperation, as much as I try to keep up with a positive appearance. I still have some savings to lean on but I can’t keep doing that in the long term.

Any advice or leads will be awesome. Thank you in advance!

Here are what netizens think:

  • Why not join the bus companies as a Bus Captain? I have a friend used to work in tour agency but then lost his job in Feb when China tourists are banned and the agency went bottom up. He joined one of the companies and is about to graduate from training course aldy.
  • I’ve too just lost my job, just managed to find one last Friday morning with a 22% wage increment and was supposed to head down to sign the contract today but everything was put on hold afterwards.
  • I believe that every adversity presents opportunities in other areas. I would suggest looking at companies that are in e-commerce, logistics (delivery companies), groceries/supermarkets, online streaming companies etc. Maybe online translation services too as I heard my friend dabble in for EN to Chinese translation.
  • Just last month till just last week , we were still hiring IT programmer. 4 openings no applicants at all. It’s a local listed company(retail, real estate) with our own building so not some sme.

EX WOODGROVE SEC ENGLISH TEACHER WHO STOLE $40K IN STUDENT FUNDS, JAILED

0

47-year-old Maslinda Zainal, the former Head of Department for English at Woodgrove Secondary School, was found guilty of two counts of criminal breach of trust as ap public servant last year.

She is set to begin her jail term of one and a half years after her appeal against her sentence was dismissed by a High Court judge on 12 August.

She was charged with the collection of money from students for learning packages, but she “over-collected” about $40,000 between January 2016 and April 2017.

The offences were discovered when the head of English for the school’s lower secondary students, checked the amounts collected against the bookshop invoices and discovered discrepancies.

Maslinda is set to start servicing her sentence in 2 weeks, and MOE added that Maslinda has since been suspended from her duties since 2017.

MOE added that disciplinary actions will be followed up after the culmination of her court case, and they said that they take a serious view of staff misconduct.

COMPANY OFFERS SHARES TO EMPLOYEES BUT LACKS COMPARED TO AN ACTUAL INCREMENT

0

Hi all,

Firstly, I apologise if this is not the place to be posting this question.

So, I’ve been working at a mature start-up for about a year now. I joined as part of a growth cycle in which about 100 people were hired. My role is compensated well, mostly because I work in technology in a role with a lot of responsibility.

I asked when I joined if I could have shares and they said it was in the works and coming to everyone soon. I didn’t press too much as I was already receiving a big bump in salary.

Recently, all existing employees have been offered growth shares. The company has made a big deal about not wanting it to be about a % stake in the business or deciding based on salary. Which, if I’m being cynical, seems like it only stands to benefit them by making it harder to understand what you’re getting.

Does anyone have experience receiving growth shares? Typically, how many shares would you expect for a company at this stage? The only figure I’ve been told is based on the company’s previous funding round. They were valued at ~$30m. If the company sold for $1B (I repeat IF), I would be looking at a $90,000 return on the sold shares. Am I being unreasonable to think this isn’t actually a very meaningful stake given how few startups actually reach that size?

Purely on numbers, I’ve worked the offer to be ~3.5% of my salary as Growth shares, vested over a 5-year period. Equating to ~0.0008% stakeholder in the business.

Sorry for the ramble, Im planning to speak to them about it, but ideally I’d like a number in my head and some evidence of what other companies at this stage have offered in the past.

I rather get straight cash increments.

TUTOR SAYS SHE CAN EARN UP TO $6K PER MONTH GIVING TUITION, BUT $0 ON SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

The ugly side of tutoring industry

Recently, there have been multiple posts about whether Teachers should quit their jobs to be a tutor, or even tutor should join the working industry.

These are my 2-cent thoughts:

While being a tutor gives a sense of satisfaction to be able help their students to improve and able to plan their own time, it is not as glamorous as one thought when it comes to remuneration.

Do not forget that, as a private tutor, they are considered self-employed and hence there are no CPF contribution from employer (which they lose that 17% perks).

In addition, they may lose out on other benefits such as medical, insurance, leaves, etc.

While some may argue that they can easily hit 5-6k a month, that is provided on many factors like the level of students they teach, the frequency of those higher paying students, etc.

However, when they reach the end of year period, typically around November and December, their income will come to a drastic dropped due to students going on Holidays, students dropping tuition as they do not need it anymore (eg. Graduating Cohort) and other reasons that I may have missed out.

Hence, I think one should look at Annual Remuneration rather than Monthly salary earned. Fresh grad typically can earn 3-4k/month, with performance bonus and AWS, which will give them a good amount of 40-60k per annum, as compared to a tutor, it will probably be around 40k per annum or less.

However, though I dont encourage being a full time tutor but I think it is still a decent part time career that one can take up as side income to supplement their main income.

You may call me materalistic but money still speaks volume, not passion.

Of course, if remuneration is not an important factor, then by all means, pursue the life of being a private tutor then.

MAN COMPLETED 85 GRAB FOOD ORDERS IN 25 HOURS TO GET MAX TIER BONUS OF $115

0

Doing Grab food is what a lot of people do to supplement their income, and some do it as a full-time job.

A man recently posted photos of him completing 85 orders within 25 hours and shows that he hit the max tier gem reward earning him an extra $115.

In his Facebook post, he wrote: “85 orders done within 25 working hours . Can lim kopi Liao sibei shag no time complete my last training if not sapphire Liao D;

$340 + $115 = $455

Assuming that each other earns him $4 that will earn him $340 on regular GrabFood orders.

While some netizens applaud what a young man is capable of completing many netizens said it’s not feasible on the long run and the netizen soon flamed for showing off his earnings on social media.

Here are what other GrabFood riders said:

  • Piece of advice bro.. whatever you had earned keep it to yourself. Try not to post onto social network…
  • If grab can assign 85 orders to you in 25hours, that means grab is not fair to others riders in Singapore

MAN FINED $500K & ORDERED TO SURRENDER $1.25M FOR ILLEGAL 4D AND TOTO ACTIVITY

0

In an operation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against an organised criminal group (OCG) operating 11 illegal online betting portals facilitating lottery and horse betting in 2016, Ow Choon Bok (“Ow”), a 45-year-old Singaporean man, was arrested along with 48 other individuals.

Police investigations revealed that Ow had been managing his illegal 4D and TOTO business since 2009. He had maintained an administrator account for the website and oversaw the online betting accounts, which includes the collection of illegal 4D bets and settling of illegal 4D monies. Ow had also set up an operation centre overseas and recruited several individuals in his operation.

On 15 December 2020, Ow was sentenced to an imprisonment term of  four years and 12 months, and a fine of $500,000, for providing a Singapore-based remote gambling service, receiving illegal 4D and TOTO bets, transferring of criminal benefits, being a member of an OCG, as well as offences related to an OCG, under the Organised Crime Act 2015, Remote Gambling Act 2014, Penal Code and Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act.

Following his conviction, the Police had sought a confiscation order against Ow to forfeit the benefits derived by him from criminal conduct. Based on financial investigations conducted by the Police, Ow was found to have accumulated unexplained wealth through his illegal activities over the years. This amount was disproportionate to his known sources of income. On 27 July 2022, the High Court made a confiscation order against Ow, with the amount to be recovered under the order to be a total sum of approximately $1.25 million.

Under section 7(1) of the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act 1992, any person who is convicted of a serious offence is subject to having the benefits derived by him from criminal conduct confiscated.

SHORT-HAIR AUNTIE WHO THREW CHAIR AT WOMAN, SHARES HER POV ON VIRAL FIGHT

The short-haired auntie who was seen in a viral video throwing a chair at another woman before getting socked in the face repeatedly by another man, has since come forward with her side of the story.

The fight happened at a Getai at Lor Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association, located at 15 Arumugam Road, on 10 August.

The short-haired auntie told media outlets that she reserved a seat for her friend at the Getai, but the couple in the video then arrived and threw away a cup of coffee and bun that was left on the seat, before sitting down.

She added that she received 2 stitches on her face and is adamant that she has done nothing wrong.

However, several netizens who purportedly know her said that she regularly chopes seats when she’s not supposed to.

Netizens’ comments

  • I know this aunty! She always tie up the seats at the ge tai then sell to people! It is not right because the seats do not belong to her too. If u try to argue with her she will get very aggressive and starts hurling vulgarities at you
