COUPLE EARNING $200K/YEAR, SHARES HOW THEY BEAT INFLATION & RISING COSTS

0

Living below means

Have been reading news articles about how to cope with inflation and rising costs/interest rates.

I think, at the heart of our financial philosophy, is knowing what is really important to us. After all, few can have everything they want in life.

I want to share our approach.

My husband and I are in our late thirties.

Together with our toddler, we live in a four room BTO which costs us around $450k.

Our combined gross annual income is estimated to be around $200k. Before the recent interest rate hike, we pay around $700 each via CPF OA monthly to service our housing mortgage.

We own a (?probably) fourth hand vehicle.

I wear a uniform at work. I have more old and comfortable t-shirts and shorts than new clothes. Especially with the pandemic, there hasn’t been any need to buy new clothes. With mask wearing, there is also less need for cosmetics.

My CPF has already attained FRS since I turned 30. Even if I stop working, compound interest should continue to work its magic and maintain the balance above any increase in CPF minimum sum.

With our spare cash and savings, we invest in shares for dividends and capital gains. We often buy SSBs and other bonds that the market has to offer.

We think that we are financially healthy when we don’t have to think too hard before buying something we need/want. We are not doing anything different to combat inflation and rising costs. Probably because at baseline, we are quite frugal. To us, spending quality time together as a family and enjoying good food/shared experiences are what really matters.

Never mind that we are not driving a brand new car. Or that we are not staying in a private home. Or that we are not wearing branded apparels.

Having a peace of mind that we do not have to struggle with credit card/mortgage payments while focusing on quality time together as a family is something that not many people may consciously prioritise. Cultivating the habit of spending/living below our means is key to ensuring that we do not have to make drastic adjustments in our quality of living when certain monetary conditions change.

CHINA MAN CHUGS WHOLE BOTTLE OF ICED TEA, STARTS VOMITING BLOOD

0

A man in China drank an entire bottle of iced black tea at one go, in an attempt to cool himself down in the hot weather.

However, he soon fell severely ill and vomited blood, and he was then conveyed to the hospital.

The incident happened earlier this month on 19 July, in the Harbin region of Northeastern China, according to 163.com.

The man was seen in CCTV footage entering the A&E department of the Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, before crouching down ad vomiting blood.

The other patients nearby then immediately vacated the area after he vomited blood, and he was then admitted for immediate treatment by medical staff.

His vital signs managed to stabilise following a blood transfusion and he was placed out of danger.

According to news reports, the 38-year-old man was in good health at the time, and he said that he chugged the entire bottle of ice tea at one go due to the sweltering weather.

The doctor that attended to him said that a large amount of frozen liquid entering his digestive tract caused strong spasms in his organ, resulting in gastrointestinal bleeding and mucosal tear.

He said that such heavy bleeding can be life-threatening, and reminded people to be careful when consuming frozen food and beverages, as they can irritate the digestive tract.

PHOTOS OF GUNS BEING “BROUGHT INTO S’PORE” IS FAKE – IT’S ACTUALLY ROUTINE CHECK

0

A photo by a netizen, Go Go, shows police officials inspecting firearms at Johor’s customs, with the netizen alleging that someone had brought firearms into Singapore.

However, the authorities have since clarified that the inspection was just a routine check and urged the public not to spread misleading information online.

There were at least 10 crates of the weapons, including high-grade rifles, bullets and etc, inspected at the lane for lorries to pass through the checkpoints.

The Johor police confirmed that the inspection was for a routine check, with officials inspecting a trailer and a four-wheel vehicle. at the exit lane of the checkpoint on 22 July at about 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The police chief commissioner, Kamarul Zaman Mamat, said that “the inspection was a routine check for every weapon, ammunition and related equipment as per the interim license approval letter issued by the Inspector-General of Police.”

The firearms were inspected for clearance to enter Singapore after a joint military exercise with the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Zaman added that the police will be taking action against those who intentionally spread false information.

STAYING SAFE DURING HUNGRY GHOST MONTH, WHEN GHOSTS ROAM THE STREETS

0

The Hungry Ghost Month is upon us once again, and during this month, it is believed that spirits, including our deceased loved ones and ancestors, are released from the Gates of Hell to roam the earth to satiate their hunger.

They also come back to the land of the living to visit their loved ones.

This is a month where it really pays to be careful, because you never know who or what might be lurking around in the corners around you.

Don’t look back when your name is called

It is believed that everyone has three “lights” of “Yang” energy on their bodies, one on their forehead, one on each side of their shoulders.

These lights are supposed to protect you.

So when you turn around, you extinguish one of the lights and essentially make yourself vulnerable to spiritual attacks.

However, if you do have to turn around, turn your whole body so that you won’t extinguish any of the lights.

Don’t step on roadside offerings

This is pretty self explanatory, imagine if you were having dinner and somebody messes with your food.

You’d be angry too, right?

Don’t look under the prayer altar

It is not advisable to be “kaypoh” and look under the prayer altar.

Spirits might be having a feast there and they do not liked being disturbed.

Don’t sit at the front row at Getais

This is pretty common knowledge by now, the front rows at Getais are reserved for the wandering spirits to have an unobstructed view of the show.

Not that it matters now, since Covid-19 have pretty much snubbed out all Getai performances for the time being.

Don’t use cameras at night

You wouldn’t wanna capture something photobombing your selfies, would you?

Don’t tap on your own or other people’s shoulders

As we mentioned in the first point, we all have 3 lights on our bodies, including on our shoulders.

Tapping someone on the shoulder essentially extinguishes the light on their shoulder, opening them up to spiritual attacks.

Don’t stay out late

Night time is when the Yin energy is the strongest.

Staying out late is non advised because, well, there spirits are at their strongest at night.

Don’t talk to yourself

Talking to yourself is an open invitation for spirits to interact with you, because the spirits might think you are talking to them.

Also on a side note, don’t whistle as well because spirits are attracted to whistling.

Avoid wearing red or black

It is widely believed that spirits are attracted to the colours and black.

They might try to “wear” your clothes and inadvertently possess you.

Also, while we’re talking about clothes, don’t hang wet laundry outside late at night as wandering spirits may “wear” the clothes and get into your house when you bring the laundry in.

Don’t go swimming

Spirits of people who have drowned are doomed to find a “scapegoat” to replace them so that they may move on.

Who knows? You just might be the unlucky chosen one.

If you feel cold all of a sudden, don’t panic

It would appear as though a spirit is nearby and you have caught their attention, especially if you get the chills and start having goosebumps.

Pretend nothing happened and carry on with whatever you are doing, because the last thing you want to do is to make the ghost think that you can see them by acknowledging them.

ICA – CHECKS ON ALL OUTGOING CARS WILL SEVERELY WORSEN TRAFFIC

0

The couple who escaped Singapore by hiding in a lorry container compartment after scamming their customers of $32 million, sparked concerns about security levels at Singapore’s borders.

However, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) spoke to The Straits Times, saying that they won’t be checking all vehicles at the land checkpoints as this will worsen the traffic there.

A spokesperson for ICA said that Singapore’s land checkpoints are one of the busiest land crossings in the world, with about 200,000 departing travellers daily before the pandemic.

Any delays in clearing traffic will cause a buildup of traffic on the main roads surrounding the checkpoints, including the BKE, for Woodlands Checkpoint and AYE for Tuas Checkpoint.

ICA is instead, choosing a more balanced approach by conducting regular and random operations on departing vehicles daily, including inspecting car boots, luggage and engine compartments of buses, and the cabin in container compartments of lorries.

In the event of a major security incident, officers will conduct more checks on departing vehicles to prevent offenders from leaving the country.

An example would be is a terrorist attack inland were to take place, ICA would step up inspections efforts to stop the perpetrators involved from leaving.

ICA said that although the checks may not be 100%, they are still not minimal or negligible in numbers.

HOW TO ORDER NASI PADANG SO THE AUNTIE GIVES YOU EXTRA & CALLS YOU SAYANG

How to order Nasi Padang in Malay (as a Chinese, so makciks can call me sayang)
Question
I am Chinese who loves Malay food. I wish to order Nasi Padang in Malay like a local so I qualify for the mythical ‘Malay Price’ or get extra portion. Bonus if the Makciks will call me ‘sayang’.

Please teach me the necessary Malay phrases needed (especially white rice, beef rendang, curry vegetable, chicken cutlet, sausage, and egg). Google translate might provide a literal translation so I’m asking here.

Terima Kasih Bahasa Melayu Cikgu-Cikgu.

Netizens’ comments

  1. Address them as kak kak instead of makcik.
  2. In a respectful and loving way like you’re talking to your favourite grandma, greet the makcik with “Hello cik! Saya nak nasi padang hari ni!” (Hello aunty! I want to have Nasi Padang today!)
Once the cik asks you what you want, you can list down the ingredients like the other commenters listed. Or if you don’t know the terms, just point and say “yang ni, boleh?” (this one can?) or “ni pun” (this one also).
After you paid, thank the makcik.
If the makcik calls you “sayang”, “‘yang”, “nak” (child), “adik” (younger sibling), or “dik”, you’ve succeeded.
  3. Here’s how you should start:
“Cik (for older auntie/uncle)/Kak (lady around your age)/Abang (guy around your age), nasi, makan”
Most Nasi Padang stall serve white rice so no need to specify when ordering. Just say “nasi, makan” will do, if you’re eating it at the food court/hawker centre. Change “makan” to “bungkus” for takeaway.
Typical gravy that the stalls serve include:
    – Lemak ayam cili padi (Chicken chili padi gravy, yellow in colour. Not “yellow curry”)
    – Rendang daging (Beef rendang)
    – Asam pedas ikan/ayam (Spicy-sour fish/curry gravy, reddish-orange in colour)
    – Sayur lodeh/Lemak sayur (vegetable gravy, yellow in colour. Usually eaten with lontong)
    – Kicap ayam/ikan (Chicken/fish with sweet soy sauce – Kari ayam/ikan (Chicken/fish curry)
You may want to google some of these to have a better idea of what they look like.
    For your case:
    – Egg: “telur” (usually they serve sunny side up, so “telur mata lembu”. Literally means cow eye egg. Although no cow parts are in it). Sometimes they have onion omelettes, “telur bawang”.
    – Chicken cutlet: “ayam” cutlet. No pronunciation change for cutlet. No need to change to Malay word. Just keep it as it is.
    – Sausage: pronounce it as you would in English.
    Other sides they might have:
    – Nugget, seaweed chicken (“ayam” seaweed), stir fried veggies (“sayur goreng”, usually stir fried cabbages), fried potato patties (“begedil”)
I think I’ve covered the baseline. All the best!

FINANCIAL ADVISOR TOLD FRIEND TO INVEST, 50% OF SAVINGS GONE IN A FEW MONTHS

0

A Facebook user has shared his unpleasant encounter with his friend who is an insurance agent.

According to his post, his friend has introduced him to investing in a new fund with high returns and zero risks involved. He then decides to invest 70 per cent of his saving into the fund. However, in just a few months’ time, his investment incurred a loss which was 50% of what he had invested.

He then confronted his friend and only find out that his friend did not inform him about the losses until the annual report of the fund is about to be public.

His friend then told him that he did not know that investment is risky.

In his post:

“One of my friends is a financial/insurance advisor. He asked me to put my money in this new private fund (let’s just call it Tasty Tulip) that he said confirm plus chop guarantee 20% annual returns with zero risk. Over the past few months, I followed his well-meaning advice and let him put around 70% of my savings into Tasty Tulip.

Today, he told me that Tasty Tulip lost 50% of my original capital! When I called my friend, he said that it didn’t cross his mind that investments are risky and even worse, his boss defended him by quoting the “No Free Lunch Theorem” in finance (smlj?)! Can you imagine how angry I was when this boss said nothing at our prior meeting when my friend gave me his reassurances?!

The worse part of this is that my friend already knew of the losses a few months ago, but only told me about the loss before Tasty Tulip published its annual report. But since he had many sleepless nights worrying about this, do you think I should forgive him and let him manage the remaining 30% of my savings?”

WOMAN TRYING TO SPOIL HER SISTER’S PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP

0

My older sister has a history of unhealthy behaviour and has been arrested a lot of times. She has done many things to my brothers and me that hurt us. Even Disappears for periods of time and shows up when she needs something.

My sister has been gone and out of contact with us for a year and when she came back she brought a fiance with her. She was really charming and nice to us which she is normally only like that when she needs or wants something from us.

When I met her fiance I realised he was a generally nice person who made a good amount of money, my brothers and I all thought it is best he knows an important part about my sister before she marries him, which is her being a “siao person”.

When we told him he did not believe us and went to get our sister she asked him to wait in the car and started crying saying she is a changed person and she believes she was a bit “siao” and said sorry for all the times she mistreated us and also said she does not understand why we would try to ruin the happiness in her life.

My brother felt bad and apologised to her and even said he will go speak to her fiance to take it back, I told my brother we should not because we were being honest and he said everyone deserves a second chance.

My mom does not think she changed but believes it was not our business to get involved in their personal relationship like that.

I don’t believe anyone can change from being a “siao person” and “siao person” don’t feel real connections so why should we watch someone go fall into our sisters trap, I mean we all know what she likes and how she treats people like objects.

WIFE TELLS HUSBAND HIS “USELESS” AS HE STARTED SELLING INSURANCE

0

I left my job as a banker 2 years ago and went into insurance. As a start, I do not have a stable income and could not contribute to the family expenses. My wife is not supportive of my decision. She is only earning 3k a month and we have been relying on her salary to pay for bills and expenses for the past 2 years.

Due to covid, i am facing a lot of challenges at work (still an insurance newbie… need to find prospects… couldn’t meet clients etc) and instead of being understanding, she kept complaining about me not bringing money home.

She told me many times that she is struggling with the amount of money left for herself and that I should be doing my job too and not let her be the sole contributor of income in the family.

“It is ok if you want to sell insurance.. but what if forever no sales how? You need to learn when to give up. Maybe you should try to do some part-time jobs? Like food deliveries? Our priority now is to bring money back! We have a son to feed!”

She wants me to give her a deadline? Like how? I am trying to meet people! Instead of encouraging me, she kept using words like “useless” “impractical” “childish” on me.

I started confiding in an ex-classmate, who is also one of my insurance prospects. I told her about my wife not being understanding etc and she is really the complete opposite. Nah, We are just purely friends… she is not my type. I just wonder why cant my wife be like her?

I have zoom meetings and training almost every day and those meetings are very mentally draining. She scolds me when I nap and leave the son to her. She said that if I cannot contribute financially, i should be helping her with the kid.

Am i really not practical? Advice please.

PS: sorry my english not good. Pardon my grammar mistakes
