7 MEN & 1 WOMAN ARRESTED FOR SUSPECTED INVOLVEMENT IN PHISHING SCAMS

The Singapore Police Force said in a press release yesterday (9 June) that 8 people were arrested for their suspected involvement in a series of DBS phishing scams.

Here is the police’s statement

The Police have arrested seven men and one woman, aged between 17 and 33, for their suspected involvement in facilitating the conduct of DBS phishing scams.

Between 5 and 8 June 2022, Police received reports that more than 60 victims had fallen prey to DBS phishing scams amounting to a total loss of more than $60,000. These victims had received unsolicited SMSes with tags like “SG-DBS” or “DBS-Notice”, which stated that their card had been blocked due to unusual activities, or that their bank account had been frozen due to suspicious activities. The SMS then directed victims to sign in via an embedded link to verify their identity.

This link redirected victims to a spoofed Internet banking log-in page, where victims would be asked to key in their online banking username and password, and bank card details. After entering the spoofed website, victims would be redirected to another spoofed web page, which would request for them to key in the One-Time Passwords (OTP) received on their mobile phones. This compromised their accounts and allowed scammers to siphon off funds, with victims finding out only later that they had fallen prey to the scam.

Through follow-up investigations and close collaboration with DBS Bank, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the beneficiaries of the siphoned-off funds and arrested them in an island-wide operation on 8 June 2022.

The eight persons are being investigated for the offences of cheating or money laundering. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine. The offence of money laundering under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act 1992 carries an imprisonment term not exceeding 10 years, a fine not exceeding $500,000, or both.

The Police take a serious stance against any person who may be involved in scams, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law. To avoid being an accomplice to crimes, members of the public should always reject requests by others to use your bank account or mobile lines as you will be held accountable if these are linked to crimes.

For more information on scams, members of the public can visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688. Anyone with information on such scams may call the Police Hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

LOCAL DON’T GO COMPANY GATHERING CAUSE ALOT OF FT SCOLD HIM

0

My best friend “K”  and I have worked for the same company for the last seven years. It’s a small company and it’s where we met. The owner has a few other businesses and every year for New Year’s Day he hosts an annual bbq at his house for all his employees. K usually doesn’t attend because he spends the holiday with his own family. In 2019, K attended for the first time with me and we left early. I’m not sure what happened but K was visibly upset and any time I asked him about it, he would say he just preferred not to talk about it. I left it alone.

With the pandemic, the bbq hasn’t happened in the last few years but this year it was back on. I assumed K and I would be attending together again but when I asked him, he gave me a firm no. I told him I had had enough and wanted to know what the issue was. I didn’t understand what could have possibly happened that turned him off from attending since our boss was always friendly, as well as our co-workers and the folks from the other businesses.

K admitted to me that he had experienced some “microaggressions” while there. He ended up arguing with a manager from one of the other businesses who told him he was acting like “AH.” I can admit that the company has more foreign employees than locals. K being one of the few local employees there but no one there is racist. And from the way K told it, he started the argument anyway. I told him not to worry about those people and we should just go and have a good time. K sort of just shrugged and I thought we were good to go.

Day of the party came and I went to go pick K up and he tells me he’s not going and that he thought he made that clear. I told him he hadn’t and we began to argue. I lost it and told him he was being too sensitive and that if they were really racist they wouldn’t have hired him (which I stand by). I told him that words can’t hurt you and words was just words and that he was giving it too much power.

I left in anger and went and enjoyed myself at the bbq. We haven’t talked since.

I’ve tried calling him and talking to him at work, but I’m being ignored. I asked my brother’s girlfriend about the situation and she thinks I was being insensitive to K. I still think he’s overreacting but I’m also second-guessing myself because maybe I shouldn’t have yelled at him for not wanting to come.

They then tried again and the ex-girlfriend then got pregnant again, allegedly telling her he got her pregnant so she can’t leave him.

Here is what the netizen said (SIC)

“this guy here made his ex girlfriend pregnant. They had a miscarriage the first time but he made his ex girlfriend pregnant again by saying to her that he did that so that she can go to nobody .

while the girlfriend is pregnant , he left her and found a new girl shown on the picture above .

throughout the pregnancy people had been asking him for money to cover some charge at the hospital and for the baby but $0 had been given .

He kept on promising to pay the girl $200 every month but went missing .

People saw him going out for dates with his current girlfriend but went missing to his own child . He didn’t once met his newborn child and didnt pay for anything up till now .

Hopefully when he saw this post he can stop going missing and pay what he’s supposed to.”

GIRL ACCUSED OF BEING A STALKER FOR CHECKING SOMEONE ONLINE

0

Hey, all. I’m a woman and as all of those things, I’ve definitely checked people out online before going on a date with them, or even agreeing to a date with them. My safety is a huge priority (priority #1 even!) and I care about that enough to take precautions. I also don’t want to waste time going on a date or multiple dates with someone only to find out that they don’t view me as a full human being deserving of rights.

Recently though, I got into a discussion with a man in a thread online. He insisted that you get to know people through dating; you don’t invade their privacy by looking them up beforehand. He also said it’s immature and insecure to “want to know what someone was doing 4 years ago or who that woman is in a photo their cousin posted of them.” That was when I doubled down, because I absolutely don’t care about shallow stuff like that. I care about knowing whether or not the person I’m considering for a date might cause me harm.

I explained that iit’s very easy to find public records on Google. You can see if someone has been arrested and on what charges it will be all over the news (potentially relevant) or if someone is a registered offender (again, potentially relevant). I also added that checking even ONE social media (which, if it’s public, is public info) can tell you a lot about someone. I know wokefishing is real. A lot of people don’t put everything out there on their Tinder profile, but if I saw that they liked tweets from or followed certain people I hate, I would know that we weren’t compatible and I literally would not waste another minute on them.

The dude online insisted that that’s super stalking behavior, acted like there was something wrong with me for wanting to “invade someone else’s privacy” before letting them into my life, and was altogether very gaslighty. I stopped arguing with him, but I’m still wondering about the concept of looking someone up before you date them.

This is something I and all my female friends did. “I wanna make sure they are who they say they are!” or “I don’t wanna be getting involved with someone who’s already got a bunch of drama going on!”), but ultimately I don’t think we’re being petty or insecure.

It’s a way to stay safe.

So question for all of y’all out there: do you check people online before you date them?
