Sim Hwa, 93-years-old, hit his 85-year-old roommate with his walking stick multiple times in a dispute over room lighting.
The victim suffered fractured fingers and lacerations.
Sim pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his roommate at a home for senior citizens and was sentenced to 6 months jail.
What happened?
The incident happened on 17 October 2020.
Sim entered his unit at around 11pm while his roommate was sleeping and turned the lights on.
His roommate told him that he wanted to sleep and turned the lights off.
The two then got into an argument, with Sim turning the lights on again while his roommate repeated his desire to sleep and turned the lights back off (again).
Sim then became violent and picked up his walking stick to hit his roommate, who was lying on the bed, repeatedly.
The roommate then fell onto the ground during the struggle, but Sim continued to beat him up on the ground.
A nurse then heard the victim crying for help and separated the two, effectively ending the assault, and she then called the ambulance.
Sim had hit the victim more than 10 times with his walking stick in total.
The victim was then sent to SGH and found with multiple abrasions and lacerations.
He was also revealed to have suffered fractures to his fingers, rendering him hospitalised for 10 days before being transferred to Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital for another 17 days.
His total medical bills cost $190.25.

A Netizen shared his story online about how he got scammed by someone online.
He was looking for a investment loan of $25k and used google to find one. He then selected the first page and started contacting a person named Donald in the webpage.
Donald then allegedly asked him to make an instalment payment of 778 before he could provide the loan. An hour later Donald then asked him to make a second payment of $2500.
While he was making a delivery, the Netizen complied and transferred 2 times to the company as he thought that since it was legal, there wouldn’t be a problem.
Another hour later, they used another phone number to contact him and asked him to make another payment. The netizen then got a heated exchange with them and decline to make the third payment.
The netizen then made a police report and contacted the bank after he finished his delivery.

Here is his story…
“I am sharing this incident of mine with others to serve as a warning so others would avoid facing the same scenario as me.I was looking for an investment loan of $25k and I decided to try a legal money lender as they would be reputable and as I would have been a sincere customer, there would not have been any problem. On 25 May as I was searching for legal moneylender on Google, I clicked on the first link and was directed to a page https://galaxyfinances.net/.
I then contacted the number given in the webpage which was 81918410.A man named Donald who sounded like a local Singaporean responded to me. I sent him my documents for processing and He replied that he would process the loan at 4% and assured me that there wouldn’t be any fee arising.‘Donald’ then contacted me on 26 May 2021 and told me to make the first instalment payment of $778 before he could disburse out the loan.
He even sent an invoice that with a name that was similar to an actual registered credit company and with an actual license number. One hour later, Donald asked me to make another payment of $2500 for a refundable immediate transfer fee. As I was riding on the road delivering food, I wasn’t able to think very well. I was given the impression that since it was legal then it shouldn’t be much of a problem. So I made the transfer.
Another hour later, Donald asked me to make another payment of $2500. I called him immediately and told him that i was not going to make the payment. He then said that he could mark the loan as pending. I told him that there is no way that I would make the payment and said that it sounded like a scam.Shortly after, they used a landline with the number 6950200 to call me. Telling me that I was almost getting the money if I make the third payment.
We had some heated exchange and I rejected their request.I then asked if i could cancel off by forfeiting the $778. He said no. He told me to transfer him $2500 then he would return $2500 + $778.I made a police report and called the bank after i finished delivery.
I then decided to do a search and realised that 1) The name Galaxy Financing is similar to an actual legitimate company named Galaxy Credit.2) The Tel number 69500200 used to call me was actually used for two other pages; https://1st-credit-lending.com/, https://prosper-credit-holdings.com. Both sites have been shut down.3) Tel number 69500200 can also be linked to a company called Prosper Credit Pte Ltd. Prosper credit was a legitimate company but it has no website. (I am not implying that Prosper Credit Pte LTD is the one who made the call.
All I can say is I received a call from this number. And we spoke for 8 mins as according to the call log.)4) A hp number on 1st credit lending.com can be linked to another prosper credit website https://prosper-credit-limited.com/, which was also closed down. 5) All four webpages were registered with http://www.tucows.com . I must share this story, despite of the danger that I am implicating myself. It is because I strongly believe that the culprit(s) must have taken victims of many and many-to-be. I was even taunted by the scammer and telling me that he would use money to go for a massage and drink.
I hope my experience and losses will be a good reminder that even with the regulation from MAS, it still depends on who is the one running the business. Reporting police, to me, was more of a formality. Just in case they decide to do harm to my family, the police may know who were probably the one responsible. This is because at the time of writing, ‘Donald’ was still online in his whatsapp chat. Alas, evil prevails. Otherwise how does he, a cheat, gets to live in a condo? As for me, I just had to work additional 500 hours of delivery to get my losses back.
I have attached my police report and the screenshots of his last message in this post. Remember not to be as stupid as me. Stay safe everyone.P.S. Hey Adrian, have fun drinking at Flora drive. Say hello to Tze Karn. Now we both know where we live so do not try anything funny to my family. Guess if you can sue your own wife to high court, then there is pretty much nothing you can’t do. I told you to return me $2500 and we call it even but you decide to drag this thing till it is a police case.
Hope you will start covering up your trackmarks so you can keep your one million dollar deposit.Edit: I have included one photo in which they used other company license and similar name to trick potential customers.”
A Foodpanda delivery rider received an order for an eatery at Westgate, despite the shopping mall (along with JEM) being closed until 5 June after a spike in Covid-19 cases among the visitors of the mall.
The rider, @ziataffazal shared on Twitter, about how he was supposed to pick up an “order” from the closed mall.
He then reached out to the dispatch agent to cancel the order, to which the agent then asked him to “explain (his) issue so (she) can help (him)”.
The rider then said:
“Hello, the whole mall closed… The mall closed how can the shop be open?”
The agent, disbelieving him, asked him to provide a picture of the closed shop.
The rider then replied:
“Ma’am, the whole mall closed, how to go in and take photo of the shop?”
The agent then apologised and said she wasn’t able to cancel the order because it was accepted; instead she asked him to approach the shop before seeking assistance from dispatch again.
To which the exasperated rider then said:
“waaat. OI. WHOLE MALL CLOSE.”
A spokesperson from Foodpanda then shared that the order was finally cancelled after a picture of the mall’s closed entrance was provided.
Malaysia’s National Security Council, led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, announced earlier today (28 May) that Malaysia will be entering full lockdown for 2 weeks, commencing on 1 June.
During the full lockdown, only essential services will be allowed to operate.
The upcoming lockdown will run until 14 June.
PM Muhyiddin said the rising number of deaths and presence of more transmissible variants were the primary driving forces behind the decision for the lockdown.
The announcement comes in the wake of Malaysia’s daily number of cases crossing the 8,000 mark earlier today.
Sulaiman Abdul Majid Maricar, 34-years-old, pleaded guilty earlier today (28 May) to one charge of using criminal force on a public servant.
He was in police lock-up when he pangsai inside a paper cup (given to him for lunch) and threw it at an AETOS officer.
He is also facing five other charges, including theft, housebreaking to commit theft, as well as other charges that will be taken into consideration during sentencing.
Sulaiman had reportedly committed a series of theft last October, among which he stole phones from a lorry, a motorcycle and cash from a hawker stall.
On 6 October, Sulaiman was walking around carparks at Sembawang with the intention of stealing when he saw a lorry and managed to open the door due to a spoilt lock.
He took three phones, a power bank, three face masks and a cash card from the lorry.
Sulaiman was arrested but later released pending investigations.
On 13 October, Sulaiman was arrested again for stealing from vehicle and was subsequently locked up at Woodlands Police Divisional Headquarters.
Inside (the next day), he was given lunch, including a paper cup with a beverage inside.
He then took a sh*t inside the cup and kept it, biding his time.
A 24-year-old AETOS officer on duty made his rounds later that evening to colelct food packets and paper cups, and Sulaiman passed him his food packet, before throwing the “sh*t cup” at the officer.
The sh*t landed on the officer’s uniform, torso, pants and boots.
The officer then asked Sulaiman for an explanation but was ignored.
The sentencing has been adjourned to June with the judge calling for a preventive detention suitability report.

On Friday(May 28), the Ministry of Finance(MOF) said that lower- to middle-income workers that are financially affected by the latest Covid-19 restrictions may receive a one-time payout of up to $700. This grant also applies to self-employed workers.
Eligible Employees placed on involuntary no-pay leave for at least a month from May 16 to June 30, or who had an income loss of at least 50 per cent, can apply for the new Covid-19 Recovery Grant (Temporary)(CRG-T).
Applications will be opened from June 3 to July 2
MOF said that this grant is part of an $800m support package that is being carried out to help individuals and businesses.
CRG-T acts as a supplement to the current Covid-19 Recovery Grant that was launched on Jan 18 to support lower- to middle-income workers and self-employed people affected by Covid-19 Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said.
“There are certain conditions and criteria attached to the CRG. We are not changing that. But we are, in a way, piggybacking on the existing scheme with a temporary scheme with different conditions specific to the current heightened alert situation, where activities have been scaled back and there are these additional restrictions.”
“So this is temporary, it’s meant for this particular period. After that we will continue with the regular CRG scheme,” Mr Wong added
To help businesses and workers cope with the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions, an $800 million support package will be rolled out under the Jobs Support Scheme(JSS).
Affected gyms, fitness studios and performing arts and arts education centres will get 50 per cent of salary support for local employees under the JSS, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Friday(May 28).
30 per cent of JSS subsidies will be given to sectors that do not have to suspend operations but are significantly affected.
These measures will help retailers, personal care service providers, museums, art galleries, historical sites, cinemas, indoor playgrounds and other family entertainment centres.
Businesses such as supermarkets, convenience stores and online retailers will not eligible for the support package.
Payouts based on salaries paid between April to June will be disbursed in September said the Ministry of Finance. Employers who retrench or place employees on no pay leave will not be eligible for these payouts for those employees the ministry added.
Businesses that wish to appeal for enhanced JSS support can do so at the IRAS website.
On Friday(May 28) Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said that the current measures to control the spread of Covid-19 cases have been working so far as the number of new community cases has stabilised.
“Therefore, we do not think there is a need for further tightening in our overall posture,” he said, further adding that Singaporeans need to continue to play a part by minimising their activities and movement outside of their homes.
Mr Wong, co-chair of the task force also noted that the number of community cases has “even declined slightly”
“So we thank everyone for doing that – for being vigilant, for scaling back activities, staying home wherever they can and going out only for essential activities,” Mr Wong said
“I think if we continue to do that… then we have a very good chance of continuing to bring down the cases and keep the infections in check,” Mr Wong added.
