Bernard Ong Wei Feng, 31-years-old, and his father Ong Eng Seng, 62-years-old, were each sentenced to 3 weeks imprisonment on 18 April after pleading guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt.

They were also ordered to pay $60 for the victim’s medical bills.

What happened?

On 22 December 2019, the victim and three of his friends were playing football with each other at about 5pm, at the multipurpose hall at Block 6, Toa Payoh Lorong 7.

The elder Ong was walking through the hall when the ball then came close to him, to which he then confronted and shouted vulgarities at the kids, who then responded to him with vulgarities as well.

Ong said that he would be back and went home to ask his son to help him confront the victim.

The father and son then returned to the hall at about 5.30pm and confronted the victim and his friends, the younger Ong pulled the victim to his feet and shouted at him:

“Eh you made fun of my dad uh, you think its funny?” as he held onto the victim’s neck and slammed him onto the floor, causing his head to hit the ground.

He then punched the boy on the right cheek as he was lying down on his back, and pressed him down against the floor before lifting him up.

The elder Ong then strangled the boy’s neck and slapped him repeatedly before pushing him towards a stone bench.

The father and son then left the scene.

The victim then went to his grandmothers’ house, who then took him to the police to make a report.

The country has not picked Soh Rui Yong for the next Southeast Asian Games. Soh is a Singaporean national long-distance runner, and holder of four national records: 5,000m, 10,000m, half marathon and marathon.

I did not hear back from the SNOC after that. Afterward, Singapore Athletics nominated me for the 2022 Asian Games to be held in China this September. I found out about SNOC rejecting SA’s nomination and read about my exclusion from the 2022 Asian Games Singapore contingent via the media today:

For clarity’s sake, I had met the Asian Games qualifying marks for both the 10,000m and the marathon.

SNOC’s statement regarding my 2022 Asian Games non-selection was as follows: “We have yet to find any satisfactory evidence to demonstrate changed behaviour and conduct by Soh Rui Yong (since the Hanoi SEA Games selection meeting) which would enable him to meet the non-performance related standards required.”

I spoke to President Lien of Singapore Athletics and will work through the association to file an appeal if the association decides to file one.

In the meantime, I would suggest a meeting with the SNOC officials concerned to resolve any outstanding differences or misunderstandings so that everyone can be on the same page.

I am disappointed to see yet another selection result in negative press for Singapore sports, but wish my teammates all the best at the Asian Games. I remain open to resolving differences with the SNOC officials if they are willing.

Six trainee lawyers who cheated in the bar exams in 2020, had their admission into the legal profession delayed.

Justice Choo Han Teck said in his grounds of decision yesterday (18 April), that he will not be naming the 6 of them in the hope that they will not be prejudiced in the long run.

He said that dishonesty is a big problem but it would also be harsh to end their professional career before it has even begun.

The six cheaters were among 26 trainee lawyers who had applied for admission to the bar last Wednesday.

Law graduates have to pass a set of exams called Part B to be admitted to the bar, in order to practise law in Singapore.

Also, the lawyer who wants to be admitted into the bar must not have any objection from the Attorney-General, Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) and Law Society of Singapore.

The six trainees’ application was objected to by the Attorney-General, citing their lack of honesty and integrity for cheating.

The six of them have since passed their required exams after retaking it.

The Police are appealing for the next-of-kin of 72-year-old Mr Ejaz Ahmad to come forward.

Mr Ejaz, a former resident at Jamiyah Home for the Aged, had passed away at Changi General Hospital on 4 April 2022.
