Renting a room in Singapore is often easy but sometimes we might get bad housemates or landlords.

Mr Xu, a 20-year-old Malaysian who is working in Singapore rented a room at Hougang paying S$500, little did he know that his nightmare has just begun.

Initially, the landlady seems fine

After moving into the home, the landlady changes from “seems fine” to completely ridiculous, the female landlady gave a list of strict rules to follow and it was so unbearable that Xu has already decided to not stay in the Hougang unit anymore.

According to Shin Min Daily News, The landlady implements more and more rules over time.

In the initial stages of moving into the rental unit, there were only standard rules such as basic hygiene and cleaning that were set up verbally by the landlady.

A rules list was later given out to the tenant stating the following

The Owner agreed – The tenant/s to do; such as: Hot water for refreshment, reheat food with microwave or for bowl /cup instant noodles, as well the toaster, small grid of refrigerator and water heater can be use by tenant.

The Tenant shall hold responsibility to clean and tidy up** dry up** the kitchen/bathroom/toilet immediately after used – when mess-up by the tenant.

The Tenant shall hold full responsibility to bear and buy own personal items/stuff for daily needs, as well as toilet paper; dish/hand liquid; laundry liquid for * front loading washing machine *; laundry hanger and clips etc…etc…

The Tenant agreed to use ; the washing machine when full load ( 7 kg ).

The Tenant will Ensure the Power of Electrical equipment has cut off always/all times after used; as well the gate is locked before leaving the premises in each time.

The Tenant will not smoke/drink ( liquor ) or deliberately destroy anything that does not belong to their own within the premises. OFFENDER will be driven away immediately and deposit will be confiscated.
Upon the expiry of sooner termination of this Agreement to yield up the room in good and tenable condition with all locks, keys and fastening complete.

Drying of Toilet $3.50 service fee

The landlady would often find fault with the tenant such as closing or opening doors too loudly and complaining that he has a strange smell.

The landlady even told the tenant to dry up the toilet after using it, on one occasion the landlady forces the tenant to pay $3.50 because she had to wipe the toilet dry for him.

After staying for two months Xu could no longer bear the the landlady and decided to move out. However, he could not get his $500 refund and he has made a Police report against the landlady

Landlady has “evil” track record

Xu took to social media to express his frustrations only to find 10 other tenants who were in a similar situation as him and almost all of them did not stay longer than two month with the same landlady.

One of the tenants was also chased out while another was suddenly told to pay an additional $50 for rental.

According to the Police media release, a 29-year-old man has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a job scam that promises victims that they will be paid to view movie trailers.

The scam involves job seekers getting contacted on various social media platforms such as Telegram and Facebook promising them “easy money” by just watching movie trailers by a platform known as “Moviitech”

Scam Mobile App

The mobile app of “Moviitech” requires users to register for an account purchase a membership which allows them to complete task that offers monetary rewards, the membership fees cost between S$65 and S$450.

Victims would be told to pay for the membership fees via Bank transfer, the victims would be paid commissions after signing up but only to realise later on that they are unable to withdraw or earn any more commissions later on.

How the app looks like

The Police would like to advise members of the public to adopt the following precautionary measures:

1. Do not accept dubious job offers that offer lucrative returns for minimal effort. If it is too good to be true, it probably is;
   
2. Always verify the authenticity of the job offer with the company offering the job; and
   
3. Never send money to anyone whom you do not know or have not met in person.

The 1st bidding results for the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) have been released and it has seen an increase amongst all the available categories except Cat B cars which went down by $500.

The bid price for CAT A cars has continued to increase for the past 6 bids, with the prices increasing by $1,440 for the latest round of bidding in April.

For CAT B cars this is the first drop in price since 2022 by $500. The first bid in January was S$77,700 and currently, it stands at $98,389 an increase of S$20,689 in 2022.

Pawnshops are often filled with expensive jewellery and watches, these items are often placed on display cabinets for sale and there are often multiple security measures to prevent theft.

However, two men who visited a pawnshop conspired to steal a gold chain after discovering a security loophole.

ZaoBao reported that a 32-year-old and a 34-year-old man were caught after stealing from a pawn shop in Eunos.

Story:

The two men discovered a gap between the jewellery display counters and hatched a plan to perform the heist.

While one of them was distracting the staff, the other would use a pair of chopsticks and grab the gold chain from the counter gaps, the pair managed to steal the gold chain worth S$3,140 and left the pawnshop as if nothing happened.

The duo has a history of crime, reported ZaoBao

The 32-year-old man faces various charges for theft and drug use. He pleaded guilty for 3 of 4 charges.

The 34-year-old man was sentenced at an earlier date for theft, loanshark harassment and assault. He was sentenced to 5 years in jail and 3 strokes of cane.

For theft in dwelling with common intention, which is punished under Section 380 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The crime carries a penalty of up to seven years in jail and a fine.

An incident that shocked many people has finally had more updates, a 9-month-old baby was slammed to the floorboard of a van and passed away.

29-year-old Mohamed Aliff Bin Mohamed Yusoff has since been charged with murder yesterday (Apr 5), during the trial he claimed that the baby was fidgeting which resulted in the baby falling onto the floorboard of the van.

Channel News Asia (CNA) reported that the prosecution argues that Aliff had used force against the baby which resulted in the baby’s death.

Aliff said that he did not call for medical assistance as he had called his girlfriend

Background

Mohamed Aliff Bin Mohamed Yusoff stand trial for an offence that happened on the 7th November 2019 at a multi-storey carpark located at Yishun Street 81 Blk 840A.

According to the court, the defendant carried the head of the baby and slammed it against the floor of a vehicle, leading to the death of the baby.

It is believed that the child belonged to his girlfriend. During that time, the baby was left alone with him.

Potential Penalties

If Aliff is found guilty of murder under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of murder carries the death penalty.
