JOLOVAN WHAM CONVICTED FOR UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY AT FORMER STATE COURTS

0

Jolovan Wham Kwok Han, a 42-year-old activist, was convicted for an unlawful assembly at the main entrance of the former State Courts building on 13 December 2018 at around 9am.

The State Courts is a Prohibited Area under the Public Order Act, with strict security protocols in place.

He was found guilty earlier today (7 January) for an offence under the Public Order Act.

Recap

Jolovan Wham was attending a court hearing in 13 December 2018 for a criminal defamation case involving Terry Xu, the editor of The Online Citizen (TOC) and De Costa Agustin, a contributor of TOC.

Wham stood on the steps outside the building, holding on to a piece of paper with the worlds “Drop the charges against Terry Xu and Daniel De Costa” on it.

CCTV footage was showed in the courtroom showing Wham holding up the sign for about 15 seconds while being photographed.

Two passers-by was also passing by at the time while he was holding the sign but didn’t pay attention to it.

Wham then kept the sign in his bag and entered the building; he then posted a public photo of it on his social media accounts.

The photo was then reposted onto a forum on HardwareZone by a netizen and a police report was then anonymously made by a member of the public, against the post.

Trial

Seven witnesses were called to the stand during the trial last year, which included three police officers who were the Investigating Officers (IOs) on Wham’s case since 2018, at different times.

They testified that Wham had applied for a police permit to stage a one-man assembly outside the State Courts on 9 December 2018 at 9pm, but it was rejected.

Wham didn’t apply for a public assembly permit on 13 December and during the trial, Wham’s defence argued that he was posing for a photo and not staging a protest or public assembly.

The police officers testified that Wham’s actions did not pose a threat to public order and he didn’t disturb anyone – but his holding of the sign still constitutes an offence, according to the second IO of the case, Assistant Superintendent of the Police (ASP) Pek Shun Fu.

Jolovan Wham is due to be sentenced next month.

TAMPINES GRC MP BAEY YAM KENG DIAGNOSED WITH NOSE CANCER,

0

Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng revealed on his Facebook that he was diagnosed with Stage 1 nose cancer back in November last year and is currently undergoing radiation therapy sessions.

Here is his post in full.

“This Sunday, I will start the series of Edusave Award presentation sessions in Tampines North. This is an important time of the year to recognise the good work of our students and motivate them to do better. Due to SMM guidelines, we have to keep the size of our sessions small. A total of 36 sessions have been planned over the coming weekends to present almost 800 certificates.

Much as I wish to congratulate our young residents and their proud families personally, I seek your understanding that I may not be able to attend every session this year.

Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with stage 1 nose cancer in November last year. I am currently in the middle of my radiation therapy sessions, which will be completed in end January.

My doctor has cautioned me that as the therapy progresses, I am likely to get tired more easily. The skin in my neck area is also expected to look sunburnt and my voice might change. Some radiation patients might lose hair at the back of the head.

Luckily, the side effects I currently experience after four weeks of treatment have been manageable, eg mouth dryness, mouth ulcers, loss of taste and fatigue. Unlike chemotherapy, my immunity is not affected.

During this period, I am slowing down my pace of work, thanks to the understanding and support of my colleagues in Tampines and the Ministry of Transport. I know I can also count on my activists, grassroots leaders and volunteers to help me serve the community.

I am fortunate to have discovered my medical condition at an early stage, when treatment is simpler and there is a very high chance of survival. I am still relatively young and have been keeping myself fit. Together with the strong support of my wife, family and friends, I am confident to overcome this challenge and recover well.

Life has thrown me a curveball, but I will be fine! 😊

(Photo: I am holding a shell which I wear during radiation therapy. My appreciation to the SGH team for taking good care of me.)”

MAN WHO BEAT STEPSON FOR LYING AND BROKE HIS WRIST AND ARM, JAILED

0

A 32-year-old Singaporean man pleaded guilty to three charges including voluntarily causing grievous hurt, with another two more charges considered for his sentencing.

He was sentenced to 2 years and 9 months imprisonment, along with 6 strokes of the cane.

The man had beaten his stepson for lying to him, resulting in the boy suffering multiple fractures and a ruptured eardrum – he beat the boy despite knowing that the child had undergone ear surgery a year prior.

The victim and the stepfather cannot be named under the Children and Young Persons Act, protecting individuals under the age of 18.

What happened?

The man worked as a logistics officer and a Grab driver, and would often get angry at his stepson because he felt that the boy was naughty and prone to telling lies.

The man would scold the boy, punch him and use a belt to hit him, in order to “discipline” him – the boy was resultantly scared of the man and frightened whenever he was with his stepfather when his mother was out working.

On 12 November 2019, the man found out that the boy hadn’t eaten and lied that he didn’t ask for it, and he then got angry at the boy for lying.

He then punched the boy’s left face, slapped the right side of his face, elbowed the boy in the back and punched him in the body.

The man then dragged the boy out of bed and into his bedroom and closed the door after the child refused to answer his questions, only replying to the family’s maid.

The man grabbed his left wrist and twisted it as the boy screamed in pain, applying more and more pressure – the boy ended up being inside the room for 2 hours.

The boy was crying and screaming so loudly that the maid was able to hear it from outside the room

The boy was subsequently hospitalised for 10 days and the police were also informed.

The next day, the boy was found with injuries including a fractured wrist and forearm, a laceration in his kidney as well as an eardrum which had ruptured.

Separate incident

In a separate incident back in 2016, the man had pointed a knife at the boy after he got into an argument with his wife about how he disciplined the child.

The mother of the boy felt that the man’s methods of discipline seemed like he was trying to kill her son.

After the boy was discharged, he moved in with his maternal grandparents and then developed a fear of leaving his home alone, frightened of bumping into his stepfather who lived just a few blocks away.

The boy’s grandfather had to accompany him every time the boy left for school and returned home and the child even experienced recurring nightmares about his stepfather.

GIRL JEALOUS BECAUSE HER BF SENT DM TO FEMALE INFLUENCER ON INSTAGRAM

A girl shared how her boyfriend sent a female influencer a DM asking her to marry him, and they then got into a huge fight over the “joke”.

Here is the story:

“My partner and I have been together for a long time and I’ve always thought that we are pretty stable. He’s never been the kind of guy who openly lust over influencers, unlike his friends who will talk about the various girls they are into.

Recent months though, he got to know more new friends and I sensed some changes in his behavior. He also began to mention this particular rising local influencer time to time, how he doesn’t get how she became so popular suddenly, how some guys like to openly flirt with her (some of these are married men), showed me some her posts and the thirsty replies she gets. He mentioned these things objectively, sometimes laughing about it. When we hang out with his friends, they mentioned this influencer as well.

I sensed that maybe my partner is into her as well but whatever. To me, it’s like having a crush on a celeb, like how he thinks Lisa is gorgeous or like how I think Ronaldo is super handsome. It was all fine until one day I discovered that he had sent a dm to this influencer asking her to marry him. Like wtf?

I guess the shock came from not expecting my partner to be this kind of guy. I got really upset about it and confronted him. He got defensive and said that it was a joke.

He explained that the influencer wrote a post asking her followers to send her a marriage proposal and he was only joking around with his friends.

We got into a huge argument. He refused to apologize because he didn’t think it was wrong. I am upset about it because of how he disrespected me by participating in it.

Am I overreacting?”
