24 Y.O JAILED FOR USING PRIVATE TAPES TO EXTORT $50,000 FROM BUSINESSMAN

0

24 y.o Daryn Ho Yong Jian was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment today (19 Nov) for trying to extort $50,000 off a businessman who is married with footages of him engaging in sexual activities with another man in his bedroom.

Two others involved in this extortion had already been sentenced to imprisonment previously with one of them who is known as B2 being sentenced to 22 months jail and another who is known as Tan sentenced to 22 months jail and a $3,500 fine for a separate incident.

Modus operandi

One of the three involved in the extortion had earlier placed a surveillance camera on top of a bookshelf in the home of the businessman back in 2019.

The man is known as B2 due to a court order protecting the identity of the businessman involved in the case.

Whenever someone enters the room of the businessman, the camera will notify B2.

The camera was left in the room for almost three weeks during which the businessman was filmed having sex with another man on a minimum of five occasions.

Beginning of the extortion

The three guys including Ho decided to extort the businessman during a meeting at Ho’s on 9 March 2020, after B2 had showed them the video that was filmed secretly.

They also agreed on their share of the loot if the extortion was successful, Ho and Tan were to get a quarter of the extorted amount and B2 was to get half of the amount.

The video and contact number of the businessman was sent to Tan and Ho by B2, which was deleted by all except Tan to erase the digital footprints.

An unregistered SIM card was then purchased and used to send three of the videos to the businessman with a message to the businessman greeting him and saying that they have some videos and images at their disposal which the businessman might take interest in.

The businessman however did not reply and filed a police report the following day after Tan sent him another message two hours later threatening that he would share the videos.

He continued to ignore them till 12 March 2020 when the trio asked him for $60,000 in exchange for the videos.

He told them that the things that they were doing was wrong and he could only afford $50,000 due to his business being badly hit by the pandemic and he needed time to raise the money.

The trio then agreed to settle on $50,000 and promised not to circulate the videos once they received the money the next day.

Police arrested Tan, Ho and B2 the following day.

However when Tan was released on bail, he did not let the matter go and tried to extort the businessman again through another person who is 28 y.o Mahadevan Edwyn.

Edwyn was subsequently caught and pleaded guilty on Oct 18, and has a pending hearing upcoming.

Penalties

For the offence of criminal intimidation via anonymous communication, Ho could have received up to four years imprisonment, fined or both.

TALKS UNDERWAY FOR SPORE TO CONTINUE HOSTING F1 IN 2022

0

Transport Minister S. Iswaran said on Nov. 15 that talks are currently underway for Singapore to continue hosting the F1 grand prix from 2022 onwards.

The government has been negotiating with the Formula One management and race organisers, Singapore GP, on a new contract.

Singapore has been hosting the F1 grand prix night race annually since 2008 at the Marina Bay circuit.

Talks in 2017 led to a four year extension being signed and this year’s edition was supposed to be the last, but had been cancelled due to the current pandemic in situation in Singapore restricting large scale events.

F1 Grand Prix helped Singapore economically

The Minister also added that the F1 Grand Prix had helped boost the economy in Singapore ever since the inaugural event in 2008.

It is said that during the race weekend each year, S$130 million are contributed to the economy via tourist receipts.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry helps to fund the S$135million costs of the event every year, contributing 60% of the expenses with the rest funded by race promoters Singapore GP.

Tourism hit hard by the pandemic

The minister also acknowledged that the pandemic has hit the tourism and lifestyle sectors hard.

He is quoted saying:

“You will be well aware our tourism and lifestyle sectors have been hard hit by Covid-19, and many events including the past two editions of the Formula One season Singapore have been cancelled or postponed.

Yet, I think we all recognise that events such as Formula One generate significant economic benefits and global branding value for Singapore,

They invigorated Singapore’s events calendar, they build our international demand and also support job creation and businesses.”

He added that Gan Kim Yong, who is Minister for Trade and Industry has asked him to oversee talks with Formula One and Singapore GP as he has experience with the issues involved and is also familiar with the parties involved.

More large scale events

Currently, The Bloomberg New Economy Forum is held in Singapore and its participants come from all around the world.

The ONE Championship fighting event is also slated to take place in Singapore in the upcoming months with spectators allowed to view the event live from the event venue.

Safe Management Measures will however still have to be complied with and organisers of such large scale events will release the details of the measures nearing the events.

MAN FORCED 13 Y.O GIRL TO DRINK VODKA BEFORE RAPING HER, JAILED 28 YEARS

0

Muhammad Alif Ab Rahim, 36-years-old, was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane after force-feeding a 13-year-old girl vodka and raping her.

He pleaded guilty to one count of rape of a minor and two counts of sexual assault by penetration of a minor back in March.

He had tried to get a lighter sentence during his appeal, arguing that he had low intelligence – making it difficult for him to choose if he wanted to plead guilty or claim trial.

He didn’t have a lawyer and filed his own submissions, claiming that certain charges against him were not proven beyond reasonable doubt.

His guilty plea-retraction attempt was then rejected by a 3-judge panel of the Court of Appeal.

His crimes

The victim had met him through one of her friends.

They met by chance on 24 October 2017 and he suggested buying some drinks and having a chat at the park.

he then restrained her and forced her to swallow the vodka, before brutally raping her over 2 hours at Kallang Riverside Park.

The victim then crawled to a grass patch near the toilet and sent voice messages to a few people, telling them about what happened.

Alif was then tracked by the police to his girlfriend’s home, where he hid inside a cupboard.

He denied meeting the victim that night but gave a different account a year later.

0

Two Singaporean men, 32 year old Daryl Paul Lee Yi Sheng and 65 year old Geramir Singh Dhoa Singh were charged in court today (19 Nov) for flouting restrictions put in place by the Government to control the risk of transmission in this pandemic.

Lee has been charged for breaching his stay home order while Singh was slapped with charges of falsifying travel history declarations in a bid to escape serving his stay home order at a dedicated stay home facility.

Lee’s case

Lee has been given 10 charges, and they are for allegedly breaching his stay home order on four occasions.

In those occasions, he went to coffee shops, the car park at his condominium as well as for a Muay Thai lesson.

He was not wearing a mask on those occasions and was not alone as he had met his friend for a meal, another at his carpark and several others at the Muay Thai session.

He arrived Singapore on 29 June and was given a seven days stay home notice (SHN) with the address at his home.

An electronic gateway and wristband to monitor his location was given to him as part of the SHN requirements.

He was caught when Immigration Checkpoint Authorities (ICA) officers went to do a routine check at his place of residence and he was on the way home.

He lied that he only went to the gymnasium inside his condominium.

He also damaged the wristband which he was wearing after obtaining approval for serving his SHN at a hotel before he left home for the hotel.

He lied again when questioned by an ICA officer that he accidentally damaged it on a taxi while on the way to his SHN hotel.

Potential penalties for Lee

For his non-compliance with the SHN measures, Lee could be jailed up to six months, fined up to $10,000 or both.

A bail of $5,000 was offered to Lee and he will return to court on Dec 10.

Singh’s case

On Aug 27, Singh had allegedly declared to ICA that he will be serving his SHN at this residence alone or with household members who share the same travel history and SHN period as him.

A physical declaration form was given to him which he acknowledge the declaration and signed.

ICA then made a trip down to the place where he was supposed to serve his SHN on Aug 28 and found that there were others in the home who did not share the same travel history as him.

He was subsequently offered a bail of $5,000 and will return to court for his trial on Dec 29.
